BitwiseFool··on Leased solar systems are failing across America

Have you heard of Manifest Destiny?

BitwiseFool··on My uBlock Origin filters to remove distractions
Admittedly, I was lazy and didn't bother to play around or experiment after I had copied it. This is a nice update.
BitwiseFool··on My uBlock Origin filters to remove distractions
Personally, I can't stand how distracting YouTube thumbnails are. I found this list to block them from the sidebar when watching videos.

! Hide all of the recommended videos on the right side of the page, except for the first up-next video.
! If you have a tall monitor you may need to add more entries, this blocks the initial list on most resolutions.

BitwiseFool··on Googlers told to avoid words like ‘share’ and ‘bundle,’ US says
>"Don’t act unethically in business and you’ll be ok too."

Easy to say, but the real world is full of grey areas, judgement calls, and interpretations. We don't have a law that says "don't act unethically" because it is way too broad. Regardless, you would still need a judge or a jury in order to make a verdict that unethical actions were taken.

BitwiseFool··on Googlers told to avoid words like ‘share’ and ‘bundle,’ US says
There are folks in my life who aren't comfortable with computers and either wouldn't know that changing the default search engine was even possible, or wouldn't feel comfortable with going into the settings because they would be afraid of breaking something.
BitwiseFool··on The importance of post-build audits: Do you know what you ship?
>"The answer is sitting there for you if you'd just believe your government acted like humans"

What are you trying to say? I can read this as either 'humans are trustworthy', or 'humans are corrupt'.

BitwiseFool··on X updates its Terms to prohibit crawling/scraping of its data
What a horrible decision. With this change I get the sense that the user has a dead account, or the page is broken. Definitely not some compelling "top hits" compilation that would make me want to sign up for 'X'.

What a disaster.

BitwiseFool··on X updates its Terms to prohibit crawling/scraping of its data
Yes, it happens to all profiles I visit and I can rule out the pins/highlights feature. There's a weatherman in Texas who is a prolific tweeter and his page shows a random assortment of years old retweets (~2015), some tweets from last month, and no current weather forecasts. They don't change between page visits and none of them are in chronological order. What do you see when you visit https://twitter.com/wfaaweather ?
BitwiseFool··on X updates its Terms to prohibit crawling/scraping of its data
Whenever I visit someone's Twitter profile without being logged in, I see an assortment of years old tweets and nothing current. Do other people experience this too? I assumed that I was being A/B tested with some limited view after the forced login modal stopped appearing.
BitwiseFool··on Amazon CEO reportedly told remote employees: It’s probably not going to work out
I've heard a lot of developers know that Amazon is a terrible company to work for, but having Amazon on your resume is a career booster. So they'll work there for a year or two just to enhance their future job prospects. Is this still true?

BitwiseFool··on Fox TV license renewal may be in jeopardy as FCC invites public response
I've always found it amazing how advocacy groups like MAD pop into existence and they're already extremely organized, well prepared, and well funded. Is there some cottage industry for spinning up groups like this?
BitwiseFool··on New Windows updates cause UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR blue screens
I'd also like to add that the Windows user experience is my "native language", if you will. I have no major problems using macOS, but I'm definitely not as fast using it, I find its window management cumbersome, and my muscle memory is constantly misfiring. I've been using Windows since childhood and there's something to be said for the level of familiarity and comfort that comes with that.

That being said, I'm terribly frustrated with the direction Microsoft is taking Windows and I hope to stay off of 11 for as long as I can.

BitwiseFool··on New ancient ape from Türkiye challenges the story of human origins
My understanding was that the name would be pronounced the same way, but as a native English speaker I don't even know what the umlaut does to the sound of the u. So I'm not even sure how the pronunciation would actually change.

In any event, if the Turkish government wants me to stop using "Turkey" I'm more than happy to call it Anatolia instead.

Hawaii also has the very unfortunate problem where highly flammable invasive species have basically taken over all of the dryland habitat.
BitwiseFool··on Perhaps it’s time to sideline the internet when evaluating collective reality
I don't have access to HN's or Reddit's data, but I suspect that it only takes a few dozen people to accomplish the "heavy lifting" you had mentioned. This is particularly noticeable on city/state subreddits, where you quickly notice who 'the usual suspects' are because they comment so consistently and show their ideological bias so readily. These folks may or may not be coordinating on a discord, but I ultimately think they have an activist mindset and are driven to try and control the discourse on the community they see as "theirs".

I've seen people in smaller city subreddits try and stand up to these folks, but they end up getting about a dozen downvotes on all their posts. They probably don't have the energy to keep putting up with all the contentiousness and they almost always give up trying to argue and the echo chamber is restored.

BitwiseFool··on Brave cuts ties with Bing to offer its own image and video search results
Google either gives me the most generic results imaginable, or it fixates on what it thinks I want while completely ignoring my old google-fu techniques.
BitwiseFool··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
I set out to try a wide variety of local 'mom and pop' pizza restaurants and I quickly realized that all of them used the same supplier. In fact most of them even use the same sauce recipe.
BitwiseFool··on Unesco calls for global ban on smartphones in schools
Such a thing is easier said than done. While self control and concentration can be taught, it is probably the case that schoolchildren just aren't up to the challenge of resisting smartphones at such a young age. Especially when it seems like most adults aren't capable of exercising restraint when it comes to smartphone usage.
BitwiseFool··on American universities have an incentive to seem extortionate
>"What do you lose? 2-3 years of goofing off at a country club."

Now that I've been living in the real world for quite some time, I yearn to return to the goof off at the country club. I acknowledge that I am definitely looking back at my university days with rose colored glasses, but I still vividly remember the lifestyle I had while attending. I can't say the same thing for most of the education I received there. That's not to say it was bad, or that I didn't apply myself, just that we tend to forget the majority of things we're taught.

That being the case, while it is true that I would have probably gotten a more straightforward education at a much lower price by attending a community college, I would have also probably forgotten just as much of it. That being the case, I'm glad the extra money spent went towards the things I look back fondly upon.

BitwiseFool··on ‘No way out’: how video games use tricks from gambling to attract big spenders
I think we're looking at the concept of "full agency" differently. In my view each person has their own level of agency, or willpower if you will, that is mostly biologically determined. I do believe that people can exercise restraint and grow their ability to self-regulate, but only to a point. And, it is quite difficult to do.

Quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things for someone to do. Some people can go cold turkey and power their way through it. However most people struggle because of their body's biochemistry. When discussing this topic I've noticed common responses along the lines of, 'that person didn't actually want to quit', or 'that person didn't want to quit strongly enough'. Yet I see it as their limited agency was unable to overcome their body's physical dependency.

BitwiseFool··on ‘No way out’: how video games use tricks from gambling to attract big spenders
I think this is a sign that the matter half of mind over matter is much more powerful than people realize. For most addictive or maladaptive behaviors I think the solution is rarely additional education or being upfront about the choice that needs to be made.
BitwiseFool··on What AT&T and Verizon knew about toxic lead cables for decades

BitwiseFool··on Ash HN: How can I make my idle CPU time useful to others?

BitwiseFool··on TikTok ban bill in US faces changes after ByteDance spent $100M on lobbying
How exactly does $100 Million dollars get spent on lobbying? The article doesn't say, and I'm genuinely curious as to whether or not this sum is accurate, and where the money actually went.
