Bilal_io··on US judge finds NSO Group liable for hacking journalists via WhatsApp
The number of crimes they've committed is also disproportional to their size.
Bilal_io··on Ask HN: How do you find part time work?
Some new people you meet will prefer to see who you are by looking you up online. At least to me, someone's online presence is a testimony that the person is who they claim to be when it comes to their experience.
Bilal_io··on Russia and China rigged Romanian Elections using 10M fake TikTok accounts
I don't think I was clear, I meant removal before their term has ended. Also, I said rarely so I know it exists, but not in the majority of countries.
Bilal_io··on One of our clients hasn't paid us $130k – or "Why Every Contract Clause Matters"
It's the implication. The letter is a threat that you take them to court, which will cost them at least five figures, and will tie their attorneys with the case. They don't know how much fighting power you got, just make them believe you're willing. No one wants that fight, even multinational corporations.
Bilal_io··on One of our clients hasn't paid us $130k – or "Why Every Contract Clause Matters"
Poinson pill can be ignored and smashed on the wall by a judge, consult an attorney if you haven't already.

Confidentiality is usually regarding public disclosure, it does not prevent your attorney and a judge from seeing it.

Bilal_io··on Torrent of Hate for Health Insurance Industry Follows CEO's Killing
You get frustrated when your doctor is 30 minutes late. Being denied coverage by your insurance for something serious and expensive is a matter that causes hate.
Bilal_io··on Russia and China rigged Romanian Elections using 10M fake TikTok accounts
Rarely you find a country where a president can be removed without violence.
Bilal_io··on React 19
> I also really don't get the apparent hate for react, usually from people who haven't used it all that much.

Same for people that have never used Angular, or only used the old AngularJS 1.x

I have more experience with Angular, but I don't hate any of the other frameworks, I've built apps with React, Svelte and tried out Vue.

Bilal_io··on Amazon Nova
That happens when you ask SWE to design. To fix this, Amazon will need to do extensive UX research and incrementally make changes until the UI doesn't look the same and is more usable. Because users hate sudden change.
Bilal_io··on Amazon Nova
You have added another zero for Haiku, its output cost is $0.004
Bilal_io··on Intel announces retirement of Pat Gelsinger
They wanted to preserve his dignity, so he was retired instead of being fired.
Bilal_io··on The Salvadoran government has 5,940 bitcoins worth $582M
> * Will I be arrested if I do a bad thing?

Are you suggesting you should not be arrested if you do something bad? I think that's how it works everywhere.

Bilal_io··on [dead]
I stopped reading when I saw this bold lie

> and glowingly cited the story of the Prophet Muhammad being told by Allah to kill any Jew hiding behind a tree or a rock in order to bring about the Day of Judgment

Bilal_io··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
I have Netflix purchased legally with hard earned money. But because I had issues I looked for illegal streams, and they were bad, crashes, buffering.. you name it. So I went back to Netflix and watched it at 140p quality.
Bilal_io··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
You're lucky you only had some buffering issues. This is got the case for many people, I don't know the percentage, but many people on reddit were complaining.

This is bad for Netflix imo.

Bilal_io··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
Not sure how Netflix does it. But this is not very time sensitive, and I would have delayed the stream by 15 to 30 seconds to cache it and then deliver to everyone.
Bilal_io··on Procrastination and the fear of not being good enough
I find that Islam has the most satisfying and complete answers about these existential questions.
Bilal_io··on Permira completes Squarespace acquisition after upping bid to $7.2B
That's what I did. I moved my .dev domain to cloudflare as soon as I could.
Bilal_io··on Let's talk about animation quality
I haven't checked, but I think some of the videos on the page might be served directly from the server.

Edit: Wow! they are loaded directly from the server where I assume no cdn is involved. And what's even worse they're not lazy loaded. No wonder why it cannot handle a little bit of traffic.

Bilal_io··on Show HN: Offline audiobook from any format with one CLI command
Deepgram is another alternative. I use it at work, fastest service and also relatively cheap. But Whisper is better for selfhosting
Bilal_io··on Famous AI Artist Says He's Losing Millions from People Stealing His Work
You bet they will lobby to protect their IP.
Bilal_io··on Liquid Foundation Models: Our First Series of Generative AI Models
I think what the parent means is that small models are more useful locally on mobile, IoT devices etc. so it defeats the purpose to have to call an API.
Bilal_io··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
To add a high level context, Islam forbids gambling and interest bearing loans (Riba) because they're considered taking people's money unjustly. Allah says in the Quran: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful." 5:90 "...But Allah has permitted trade [buying and selling] and has forbidden interest..." 2:275
Bilal_io··on Nuclear reactors a mile underground promise safe, cheap power
I would imagine the scale. This would provide much more power compared to geothermal installed in the same square footage.
Bilal_io··on Apple to update EU browser options, make more apps deletable
This reminds me of Amazon, they allow users to cash out their gift card balance in a few states, but not in most. They have the technical implementation but still limit their users.
Bilal_io··on Introducing passkey support to Fastmail
I hate that with passion. Though I don't know the technical reason behind this workflow.
Bilal_io··on The TikTok Case Will Be Determined by What's Behind the Government's Black Lines
> The Beijing government can tell the TikTok management, "give us all your data" and they will have to do it.

Bilal_io··on Will Figma become an awkward middle ground?
That's how I've always worked. I create everything in HTML and CSS and enhance the design iteratively, then I hook up the data fetched from the backend. It's way faster for me this way.
Bilal_io··on Siblings miss crucial life-extending treatment because of CrowdStrike outage
According to some comments in Yesterday's thread Debian was also hit with something similar back in April.

Another comment in this thread quotes Crowdstrike's ToS which states that their software should not be used on critical systems.

I blame the hospital for its inability to operate with pen and paper in the event of a computer crash or a power outage.

Bilal_io··on For advertising, Firefox now collects user data by default
It worked for me, no issues. I am on version 128.0 (Build #2016030615)
