BenjieGillam··on The Decline of MySQL?

  Error establishing a database connection
Complements the post title perfectly :)
BenjieGillam··on Xcode 4.4 adds support for Obj-C literals
Apparently OSX 10.8 and iOS 6 bring support for subscripting to native NSArray/NSDictionary, but I think you can add subscripts to your own classes already just by implementing the following methods:

  -(id)objectAtIndexedSubscript:(NSUInteger)index;
  -(void)setObject:(id)object atIndexedSubscript:(NSUInteger)index;
as weiran has shown for NS(Mutable)Array/NS(Mutable)Dictionary.
BenjieGillam··on Xcode 4.4 adds support for Obj-C literals
See http://clang.llvm.org/docs/ObjectiveCLiterals.html for more information, but some examples from that page:

  NSNumber *fortyTwo = @42;             // equivalent to [NSNumber numberWithInt:42]
  NSNumber *piDouble = @3.1415926535;   // equivalent to [NSNumber numberWithDouble:3.1415926535]
  NSNumber *yesNumber = @YES;           // equivalent to [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES]
  NSArray *array = @[ @"Hello", NSApp, [NSNumber numberWithInt:42] ];
  NSDictionary *dictionary = @{
      @"name" : NSUserName(),
      @"date" : [NSDate date],
      @"processInfo" : [NSProcessInfo processInfo]
  };
This, especially the NSArray/NSDictionary stuff, should make coding in Obj-C so much faster and more pleasant - well done LLVM team!

PS: Not sure if the object subscripting stuff is supported yet, but that looks awesome too!

BenjieGillam··on FileVault 2’s Apple ID Backdoor
According to the author:

> Worryingly, this was enabled by default on my MacBook Air as soon as I upgraded from the copy of Lion it shipped with. I did not enable this feature.

So it looks like you don't have to enable it yourself manually. I can neither confirm nor deny this myself, just going off what the author has said.

BenjieGillam··on Specify Node.JS TLS/SSL certificate chain correctly
Unfortunately the top hit on google for "nodejs ssl certificate chain" looks correct (it even works in most modern browsers) but it doesn't correctly specify the whole certificate chain for older browsers. This caught me out, so hopefully this post will help others too.
BenjieGillam··on Get Lanyrd conference recommendations by email
We used Lanyrd for BarCamp Southampton - awesomely useful service, very easy to use :) This new email feature should make event discovery a lot faster/easier so sounds like a great new feature to me!

Great work guys! Do you have plans to support UK/EU cards in the future?
BenjieGillam··on FitFu (YC W11): Stay active anywhere
Yes, we're from the UK :)
BenjieGillam··on FitFu (YC W11): Stay active anywhere
Yes, that was us :)
BenjieGillam··on FitFu (YC W11): Stay active anywhere
That and the amount of exercise I do each day is increasing (from zero before I started using FitFu...) and I actually WANT to do it now, which has never been the case before!

BenjieGillam··on Women who sunbathe live longer: study

BenjieGillam··on Safari on iOS 4.2: Accelerometer, WebSockets, SVG, AJAX2 & better HTML5 support
Not really "accelerometer" support, just orientation. You couldn't really build a motion sensing engine with it. WebSockets should be really cool on mobile though...
