Probably because they don't know any Italians (in Italy), just Italian Americans.
BenjiWiebe··on “Beyond the limit”: Satellites and mirrors in space pose threat to the night sky
Did you know that if you stay up a bit later* than twilight, the satellites disappear?

*The later you stay up the more disappear, until the middle of the night. But they're most obvious shortly after dark.

BenjiWiebe··on County with 37 Data Centers Asks Schools to 'Conserve Electricity'
Just to compare it to my rural county: Henrico county: pop 345,000, 237 sq miles, 1455 population per sq mile Marion county: pop 11,600, 954 sq miles, 12 pop/sq mi.

So it might be a small county but it sure ain't rural!

BenjiWiebe··on Framework's 10G Ethernet module exposes USB-C's complexity
In fact, just to for single mode fiber. Looking on fs.com, single mode cables are slightly cheaper, and the optics (for 10G) are $30 to MMF's $25.

And you get much better future proofing with SMF. And if you do need a long fast run, SMF is what you want.

BenjiWiebe··on We’re making Bunny DNS free
(Before Linode was acquired) I called in and quickly got on the phone with a live human who was very familiar with the product and helpful, and sounded (accent) like US-based support.

At the time I was paying $12/month IIRC.

BenjiWiebe··on We’re making Bunny DNS free
Me neither, but I found the $3 option with an even quicker glance.

Like really really easy.

Apologies if I missed your point.

BenjiWiebe··on Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers
I've encountered control systems and PID controls, and I still find PID elegant and cool.
BenjiWiebe··on Show HN: Make PDFs look scanned (CLI or in the browser via WASM)
Print - sign - scan. I've never been told to keep the physical print out.

I've also never had someone refuse my too-perfect digitally inserted signature, but I could totally see it happening.

Oh and I don't like signing stuff anywhere, so I also used my scanned signature and got a custom stamp made. :)

BenjiWiebe··on Court Records Should Be Free
$30/quarter, so ~300 pages. Also noticed that the fee is capped at $3/document, but I don't know how often a single document is longer then 30 pages.
BenjiWiebe··on Satellite reveals immense scale of GPS signal tampering
Ya I think they meant 'GPS'.
BenjiWiebe··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
I've encountered flibbertigibbet and Brobdingnagian. Never encountered hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia before, at least I don't remember encountering it.

Flibbertigibbet appears in some of the Little House on the Prairie (Laura and Mary) books, if I remember right.

And I've also read Gulliver's Travels which is where Brobdingnagian comes from. Brobdingnag was a land of giants. Pretty sure I've seen the word used elsewhere though.

BenjiWiebe··on Car headlights don't have to be this blinding
Tangential - in the case of low profile tires, I've seen pothole damage where the rim itself was broken. That causes a "flat tire" even if the rubber tire itself survived.
BenjiWiebe··on EU fines Temu €200M for allowing sale of illegal products
Just because it isn't toxic doesn't mean it is edible...? I would not allow my child to eat drywall, but neither do I consider drywall toxic. i.e. if they started chewing on some drywall, I wouldn't haul them to the E.R. in a panic.
BenjiWiebe··on Cloudflare Turnstile requiring fingerprintable WebGL
Yes it only allows US as the shipping address, and only US/Canada as billing address. The only reason we even allow Canada billing is because some of my relatives (Canadian) will order it and have it shipped to a parcel service on the US side of the border.

Also why do you need 1uS for motor control? 1uS is 0.1 degrees of rotation at 16,666 RPM if I did the math right.

I don't know much about motor control, is it normal to need that fast of feedback?

BenjiWiebe··on ESP32-S31
The datasheet apparently doesn't say, but judging by their other products' listed 12 bit SAR ADC sampling rates (and assuming this one is similar to what appears to be their standard ADC ) the conversion time will be on the order of 10uS.
BenjiWiebe··on ESP32-S31
Looks like you need an external PHY. It can talk to the PHY with RGMII which uses 12 pins, which are muxed with GPIO8-19.

The credit card tester bots go through the checkout process.

PoW wouldn't be a big issue for them though since their volume is much lower.

I would LOVE to be able to use rate limits (well actually, since I'm dealing with fraud not scraping, I'd ban the IP).

I can't, because every request comes from a new IP!!!

BenjiWiebe··on Cloudflare Turnstile requiring fingerprintable WebGL
Well I administer an ecommerce site, and for the checkout page I block everything besides Canada and USA.

Because those are the only two countries that we've ever in the life of our business, had a legitimate order from.

It prevents the majority of credit card testing, but it is tempting to apply it to the whole site to reduce traffic and server load.

If the bad guys also had to pay $50/month/IP it would probably work.

The bad guys don't pay that much. And sometimes the bad guys actually use the IPs of other people (botnets on residential IPs) and don't pay anything at all.

Maybe a plain WordPress install. Run something like WooCommerce and install a bunch of plugins to get the functionality that WordPress and WooCommerce should have built-in, and suddenly a cheap VPS can only handle 2 or 3 requests per second.

It's phenomenal how inefficient the WordPress/WooCommerce stack is.

Though the main issue I'm seeing is credit card testing, not scraping.

And I'm ideologically opposed to using a CDN (because it shouldn't be needed for such a small site!) so it's somewhat a self-inflicted problem...
