Belopolye··on The product manager role is a mistake
Been having this lately with one of our clients, and my impression is that more than one of these PMs have their role as a placeholder while something else is found for them to do.
Belopolye··on Craig Murray seeks UN protection in Switzerland against British persecution
If we’re being fair, it was a Republic where only land-owning, white, and Christian men were allowed to have representation in Congress.

That system was never going to survive alongside immigration (driven by capital demanding cheaper foreign labor in the 1800s), the growth of middle-class and educated women, and the spread into the frontier.

For my purposes there’s nothing that I can do on a FOSS smartphone that I can’t do more comfortably on my FOSS desktop.

Portability and the capacity to take pictures aside, but I also don’t go anywhere and my wife takes plenty of pictures of our kids anyway (backed up to my self-hosted NextCloud :^) ).

That’s something I haven’t considered, although for me I would choose the route of forgoing a smart phone altogether if the ability to exercise that right was lost.

>How the courts of a liberal democracy allow that?

The conclusion is that the United Kingdom is not a liberal democracy.

The term I see thrown around is “electoral authoritarianism,” where elections may be free and fair but institutions don’t reflect liberal values.

Maybe we’re discovering that democracy and liberal values don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand.

In some ways yes, in others, no.

I enjoyed this discussion on Apple’s less-than-stellar privacy situation. Sources are in the video description.

At that point I think my challenge is to not have anything you’d rather be private on a platform you don’t actually have control over, or why have it on a phone in the first place.
Belopolye··on Samsung disables customer phones remotely, holds data hostage [video]
I suppose that’s the other side of this. There’s a kind of privacy-as-ideology black hole that I’ve seen people get sucked into, even if in actuality they have nothing and do nothing actually illegal/immoral/sensitive.

Taking the time to install a custom ROM, run only FOSS apps, or find workarounds for needed apps, etc only to spend 90% of your time watching YouTube just doesn’t seem like a gain.

Belopolye··on Did the entire media industry misquote a Hamas spokesperson?
The conflicts of the last couple of years have not helped improve my already-low feelings about journalism and journalists.
Belopolye··on The negative impact of mobile-first web design on desktop
I don’t agree. Conceptually “the market” in this context is just individual purchasing decisions in the aggregate.

The people, voting with their dollars, have decided that they simply don’t care about privacy, libre software, etc as much as we wish they would.

I realize this makes me sound black-pilled, but mobile platforms (Apple included) are so user-hostile with regard to privacy I’m not even sure the battle is worth fighting.

IMO it’s better to just hold your nose, limit what you use your phone for as much as you can, and do everything important/sensitive on a computer that you have root access on.

Belopolye··on The negative impact of mobile-first web design on desktop
Bravo. I am reminded of the “noble savage” concept whenever I read that the people will rise up and support the libre Internet, if they would simply be introduced to it, from pseudo-vanguard tech-literati.

Dialectical virtualism?

The market has spoken, and the market prefers locked-down platforms and subscriptions.

Belopolye··on Meta Reports Third Quarter 2023 Results
I always saw the WhatsApp and Instagram acquisitions as about acquiring potential competitors (protecting revenue) over a desire to generate revenue in and of themselves.
Belopolye··on Drought in Brazil's Amazon reveals ancient engravings
Rivers change course all of the time for reasons unrelated to climate change. It’s entirely likely that the Amazon was some distance from this site 2,000 years ago.
Belopolye··on Adding crushed rock to farmland pulls carbon out of the air
Hydro-powered rock crushers? Wikipedia gives an example of a waterwheel-powered machine that crushed tin ore in Cornwall in the 1800s.

Maybe mixing the crushed rock in with seeds when they’re already being planted?

Belopolye··on GFiber Labs announces first project: 20 Gig with Wi-Fi 7
I’m kind of in the same boat. I average around 1.2Gbps and I’m not sure why I would upgrade to anything faster.
Belopolye··on iLeakage: Browser-Based Timerless Speculative Execution Attacks on Apple Devices
> However, this mitigation is not enabled by default, and enabling it is possible only on macOS.

Is this not covered by lockdown mode on iOS? Crazy.

Belopolye··on Sergey Brin's airship gets FAA clearance
From the perspective of the owners that’s a feature, not a bug.

Shareholders want big number go bigger so they can cash out, why would they care about the state of Google ten years from now?

Belopolye··on Sergey Brin's airship gets FAA clearance
Google is still a colossal money printer. Since that’s the only real goal of the people who own it (the shareholders), what’s broken that needs to be fixed?
Belopolye··on Microsoft now demands to know why you won't use Edge when you download Chrome
“Without damaging the brand” in the sight of whom? Your average person isn’t going to care about any of this, and tactics like these are making number go up, which is all these executives and shareholders care about.
Belopolye··on I face investigation for terrorism
In this situation he tweeted something about supporting any of the actions that Hamas makes.

> But in the coming Gaza genocide, every act of armed resistance by Hamas and Hezbollah will have my support.

Belopolye··on Your mother can now recommend matches for you on Tinder
> Like everything else in life, you can't depend on your parents forever. The best partners are far beyond just mother approved, but people also change.

I can agree with this, and I think there may be something to the idea that the people who know you best (in a healthy parent-child relationship) may have a good grasp on who may make a good partner. I’d also count friends.

Belopolye··on Your mother can now recommend matches for you on Tinder
100% correct on both good and bad matches. The women who were just awful matches for me very quickly got the thumbs down, while the best relationships I had were all met with a lot of support.

My mom’s first reaction after meeting my now wife was “how did you get her? Hell, I’ll marry her if you don’t.”

Take this anecdote for what it’s worth. :)

Belopolye··on Your mother can now recommend matches for you on Tinder
It’s funny because my experience has been that my mom was always 100% right about the women I would bring around.
Belopolye··on UK government surveilling social media of teaching assistants
The argument that I often read is that protecting democracy and democratic values often requires methods contrary to those democratic values (or not, as long as a democracy does it).
Belopolye··on Google pulls up the ladder on open internet, pushes unconstitutional regulation
I was doing that as a ten year old.
Belopolye··on Google pulls up the ladder on open internet, pushes unconstitutional regulation
Agree with your sentiment, but I see the future I expect at the confluence of a lot of different parties/positions (domestic politics, geopolitics, advertising, anti-piracy, “save the children,” anti-terrorism, etc) who have the money, vested interest, and ideological motivation to accomplish this.

For myself, if this plays out as I’ve described it just means it’s time to…go read a book or something, I don’t know.

Belopolye··on Google pulls up the ladder on open internet, pushes unconstitutional regulation
Autocorrect got me- I meant to type piracy. Updated my comment :)
Belopolye··on Google pulls up the ladder on open internet, pushes unconstitutional regulation
8. Industry is desperate to destroy piracy.

On top of all of your reasons.

Belopolye··on Google pulls up the ladder on open internet, pushes unconstitutional regulation
I don’t agree with what I expect.
