BeefDinnerPurge··on Post-apocalyptic life in American health care
I'd be great with a baseline medicare for all system publicly funded across the board with the option to pay more for privately funded better options. Not going to get that, or anything close to that, are we? I give up America, you get the health care you're willing to prioritize. Not my problem any more.

That said, going out of network if you can and going to the places with the cases if you can are the only real current options for beating the odds. I speak from direct experience doing whatever it took to get my wife's cancer treated at MD Anderson. We won, at least for now, but it wasn't cheap.

BeefDinnerPurge··on Ask HN: What are you grateful for?
You're not the only one grateful for successful cancer treatments this year. They really ought to be more broadly available than they are, and the constant nickeling and diming by the insurance companies over the course of the year is something for which I am distinctly not grateful. Also, my employer not firing me for being distracted whilst my wife was in treatment is another thing for which I am grateful. New Year's Resolution is to undo the bitrot that incurred and return to the front line of the AI Arms Race.

Tell me you don't understand conditional probability without telling me you don't understand conditional probability.

CEO of Reddit, how'd that go? Project Covalence, how'd that go? Andrew Yang? Our next president, right? 2018, The year Sam Altman became the governor of California, no? And of course: "I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israel Defense Forces, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to." - that aged well.

But he's now in a position where all his failures will be forgotten and his successes amplified forevermore (unless he buys a social media company, but he seems too smart for that so far). It is clear he has reached Jeff Dean levels of ridiculous hagiography though, but I guess worshipping CEOs is a step up from worshipping invisible friends or stinky geriatric ex-presidents so there's that.

A combination of real drive and a tremendous amount of dumb luck. Never forget the dumb luck part though. Life isn't fair, ask Trevor Moore who wrote a song about that, oh wait, you can't, life isn't fair...

It's less about not following the norms and more about not following the norms and doing so at a startup. Big companies know how to cut the tall poppies, it's a core corporate competency even.
BeefDinnerPurge··on Was BASIC that horrible or better?
GOTO has its uses here and there, even in C/C++. It's just sometimes simpler than enabling exceptions or overthinking the indentation to annihilate the readability of code. But it's a horrible generic control structure and that's all anyone notices.
BeefDinnerPurge··on Was BASIC that horrible or better?
Why would I hate the first programming language I learned?

What I hate is the number of tools since created to enable endless tech debt and horrible engineering practices so as to increase the hiring pool of fungible coding talent.

Who needed nice things anyway when we have 280 characters and inspiring influencers?

Exactly! If they regulate this, then what other shenanigans might end up regulated and how will they afford their 3rd bugout bunker?
