BHSPitMonkey··on You did this with an AI and you do not understand what you're doing here
For all we know, there's no human in the loop here. Could just be an agent configured with tools to spin up and operate Hacker One accounts in a continuous loop.
BHSPitMonkey··on Apple: SSH and FileVault
When it comes to disk encryption, at least in the home, the threat model isn't somebody sitting around in your home finding a way to exfiltrate the currently-unlocked filesystem; It's someone taking the computer or the drive with them and leaving.

In your analogy, the key atop the vault vanishes as soon as the vault is moved from its location (loses power).

BHSPitMonkey··on Human writers have always used the em dash
Then you're throwing out a lot of babies with your bathwater: https://www.gally.net/miscellaneous/hn-em-dash-user-leaderbo...

I'm not prolific enough to rank on this leaderboard, but I often use the em dash in comments/posts/texts and have for years—especially on my phone, since it's easiest to reach from a mobile keyboard.

BHSPitMonkey··on Taco Bell AI Drive-Thru
... Except while you're on your way to the line (or waiting to get through it), other customers' mobile orders are being accepted and you still aren't sure of the order in which they're being prepared.

BHSPitMonkey··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
But as you said, the check (and denial) is happening at the time the _user_ is trying to do something _they_ wish to do (e.g. install an APK from a project on GitHub).

Much of the ecosystem of Android apps that are only distributed outside the Play store will be affected by this, as many developers won't be able or willing to submit to this process or waive their privacy (especially young developers or those making apps that are legal but often targeted by litigious companies, e.g. emulators, YouTube clients/downloaders, BitTorrent clients, etc.)

BHSPitMonkey··on Vet is a safety net for the curl | bash pattern
I've installed untold thousands of .deb packages in my lifetime - often "officially" packaged by Debian or Ubuntu, but in many cases also from a software vendor's own apt repository.

Almost every one contains preinst or postinst scripts that are run as root, and yet I can count on zero hands the number of times I've opened one up first to see what it was actually doing.

At least a curlbash that doesn't prompt me for my password is running as an unprivileged user! /shrug

BHSPitMonkey··on Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage
Furthermore, the planet we are on cannot possibly be in space. Space is mostly empty, has no breathable atmosphere, there are no trees or grocery stores there, etc.; Earth is quite the opposite.
BHSPitMonkey··on Electric cars produce less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
You received some better corrections in earlier replies, which you've chosen to ignore... That's your prerogative of course, but there's no need to resort to "I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals"-style reverse ad hominem to make an argument.

You made some basic mistakes in your previous reply, such as confusing power (kW) and energy (kWh) and assuming that a typical driver in HI commutes something like 250mi each day. This isn't even typical for drivers on the mainland, where plenty of EV+solar owners manage to replenish most or all of their EV usage using rooftop solar generation just fine.

(If you're going to answer "well, I never said I was considering the median distance/day case - I was talking about the most extreme scenarios!" then I'd suggest at least bumping up the hypothetical solar installation to 10kW instead of going with the median.)

BHSPitMonkey··on CARA – High precision robot dog using rope
In the video he mentions how the specific type of Dyneema cord he's using is well-suited for the application (compared to other kinds of rope/cord). It's particularly strong, light, and inelastic; a lot of climbing equipment uses a version of it for similar reasons.
BHSPitMonkey··on Electric cars produce far less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
There are more benefits to EV conversion in a community than the use of renewable energy, noise and roadside air quality being pretty big ones. Also... how do you know there aren't Hawaiians charging their EVs using rooftop solar? I hear they're known for being in the sun sometimes.
BHSPitMonkey··on Electric cars produce far less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
Walmart has some gigantic amount of sites under construction or in permitting at many of their stores, and many are being built by other operators too. Charging proliferation hasn't slowed down.
BHSPitMonkey··on Electric cars produce less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
Level 1 charging overnight on a standard 120V outlet, while not ideal, is surprisingly adequate. Granted, many people rely on street parking or otherwise don't have a parking spot that is right beside their dwelling, but for rented houses or complexes with private garages/parking areas the size of the lift isn't necessarily "get upgraded service and a bunch of 240V EVSE put in".
BHSPitMonkey··on Supreme Court's ruling practically wipes out free speech for sex writing online
There are two common definitions of the phrase "free speech" that I think you are conflating:

1. The Constitutional right to free speech under the first amendment (i.e. specifically that the government may not use its authority to limit or punish its peoples' expression of ideas)

2. The vague notion that others should not be able to criticize you for something you've said or written

In this thread we are more concerned with the former. No one on the left is trying to enact laws to punish anyone's impolite use of pronouns. At worst, maybe someone has asked you to be considerate in some non-official setting (which has little to do with the first amendment).

BHSPitMonkey··on OpenAI charges by the minute, so speed up your audio
As if human-generated transcriptions of audio ever came with guarantees of accuracy?

This kind of transformation has always come with flaws, and I think that will continue to be expected implicitly. Far more worrying is the public's trust in _interpretations_ and claims of _fact_ produced by gen AI services, or at least the popular idea that "AI" is more trustworthy/unbiased than humans, journalists, experts, etc.

BHSPitMonkey··on A receipt printer cured my procrastination
Most trusted desktop password manager apps can manage and autofill OTPs in browsers as well, e.g. KeepassXC and 1password. (If you're making the tradeoff anyway, I think you may as well use a password manager you already trust with other secrets.)
BHSPitMonkey··on A bit more on Twitter/X's new encrypted messaging
As a former user of XChat the IRC client (http://xchat.org/), this rebrand makes me sad.
BHSPitMonkey··on IRS Direct File on GitHub
That's an idea... Make a fork, add a file at taxpayers/${SSN}.yaml describing your return in terms of income/deductions/circumstances, make sure it lints successfully, and then submit a PR for the IRS to review. If it's merged, CI/CD initiates a bank payment/withdrawal. If you get audited, resolve the conflicts and update the PR.
BHSPitMonkey··on IRS Direct File on GitHub
• IRS Direct File launched in 2024 after being created via the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act in 2024.

• The Trump administration is preparing to sign into law a new budget that orders the immediate termination of the Direct File program (see SEC. 112207 "TASK FORCE ON THE TERMINATION OF DIRECT FILE").

• 18F, the agency within the federal government probably most responsible for championing and promoting open source development (and just all-around providing good digital services at a significantly lower cost), was eliminated by the Trump administration in March.

I know that you are probably a busy person, like many of us here; Still, I would encourage you to take some time each week to become informed about what is (or isn't) happening in politics rather than just offering knee-jerk reactions based on partisan feelings. It really is important.

> Unless this forked version will then print out a bunch of forms for someone to physically mail in

Well yes, this is in essence what tax return preparation software has always been; The end result is a completed set of values to fill into the boxes of form 1040 (and whatever additional forms are deemed to be required), which can then be filed electronically or written/printed on paper to be returned at an office or by mail.

BHSPitMonkey··on Material 3 Expressive
I don't think it's performance bottlenecking so much as that the site is capturing the cursor and taking over its physics/acceleration, I think? Which probably isn't noticeable as long as the acceleration is similar to how your OS shell is configured, but was definitely noticeable for me on GNOME.

BHSPitMonkey··on Firefox tab groups are here
They're really not the same concern at all. If groups needed to function as containers (or did by default), you would be logged out of a site if you tried to visit it outside of a tab group (or dragged the tab in/out).

BHSPitMonkey··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
Why should any university go out of its way to "cater to" conservatives and liberals in equal measure if those ideologies don't equally value things like reason and truth? The mission should be providing education and facilitating research, not keeping political partisans happy.

> Picking up after your dog. Putting the grocery cart away after unloading. Shoveling the sidewalk in front of your house. Waiting to the side of the subway doors. Not talking during movies.

If 10% of people don't put their cart away, then 90% of carts still get put away. If 10% put things into the recycling bin that shouldn't go there, then 100% of that batch of material becomes unsuitable for recycling process unless expensive remediation is done first.

BHSPitMonkey··on NASA to launch space observatory that will map 450M galaxies
And to add to that, DOGE has been known to cancel contracts where the money has already been paid (so we're effective paying for nothing); SpaceX already has what it needs from this contract and has nothing to lose by cancelling the mission now.
