BD103··on Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job?
Yo that's awesome! I've been using Obsidian for some time, and it's absolutely superb. Since I started using it after the 1.0 release, what did it look like before the redesign?
BD103··on Is my toddler a stochastic parrot?
Ignoring the topic of the article, the artwork and design was fantastically done! Props to whoever designed it :)
BD103··on Fourteen Years of Go
Sum types are amazing! Once I got introduced to them in Rust, it was hard to go back to languages like Java where the enum type is pitiful in comparison.
BD103··on Monaspace
This looks really cool! I personally use Jetbrains Mono [0] as my goto font, but with the different-fonts-per-context and texture-healing features I might switch to this.

BD103··on Officially Qualified – Ferrocene
Congrats! Ferrocene has been building towards this accomplishment for a while. I definitely appreciate the amount of hard work that went into this. (And as a fellow Rust user, all the improvements and changes that get merged upstream.)
BD103··on Bevy 0.12
Bevy is one of my favorite game engines, especially for larger projects. Asset V2 preprocessing and .meta files look super useful. I'm also looking forward to lightmap support in future releases!

Occasionally I enjoy viewing the HTML of websites to try to deduce what web framework they are using. I couldn't figure it out for this one, but here are some things that I find interesting:

- On line 90 of the homepage, there is a single script called `document.createElement('main');`

- The website uses the `<picture />` tag to support multiple sources for images

- script.js on the website has ANSI art of the US flag (https://ai.gov/wp-content/themes/static/ai46/assets/js/scrip...)

BD103··on Advice to a novice programmer
Interesting! I stopped using Jetbrains IDEs by that time, which is why I didn’t mention it.
BD103··on The Cloud Computer
I follow a person on Github who works here! (cbiffle[0]) They wrote a fantastic series[1] on learning Rust from a C perspective and I highly recommend it.

BD103··on Advice to a novice programmer
Jetbrains has good IDEs, but I've always disagreed with how much they abstract over "running" programs. Run configurations are great for projects where you iterate quickly, but they do not teach newcomers how to use the command line. I've seen this hurt new programmers in practice when they talk about "command line witchcraft," when really it's a very useful tool.
BD103··on Advice to a novice programmer
This is fair for certain languages like JS or Java (IntelliJ is amazing), but not as much for less popular languages. I started learning Rust a few years ago, where the Rust plugin for Jetbrains IDEs was still in its infancy. Switching to VSCode specifically for rust-analyzer was a great decision for me, due to the amount of tooling included.

VSCode is popular because it is easy to learn for a beginner and shares much of the language server tooling with Vim and other popular editors. If you write a language server, it can work across multiple editors like VSCode and Neovim. (Though not Jetbrains IDEs, as far as I'm aware.) Writing a plugin for Jetbrains will only work for Jetbrains, so there's less incentive.

While Jetbrains have more powerful IDEs for specific languages, its less popular when VSCode, Vim, Helix, etc. all work together.

BD103··on Anti-Anti-Adblocker uBlock filter to get rid of the annoying YouTube message
Downloading the videos is always an option, but I’ve found it’s too much of a hassle when browsing content. It works really well when you’re planning on going offline, though!
BD103··on Anything longer ago than yesterday should just say the actual date
Not to mention, it is a lot easier to program a function formatting the text to exact dates than writing a function that estimates how long ago it was.
BD103··on Desmos 3D graphing calculator
Desmos does have a Github page, but unfortunately the main codebase is not public. Their API docs are well written, though, so it's really easy to embed Desmos into your site.
