Auguste··on Microsoft looking to release Office for Linux in 2014
Unless Microsoft is prepared to invest a lot of money and time in preserving backwards compatibility with existing Windows applications, I can't see it being met with anything but resistance.
Auguste··on Limiting passwords to 12 characters is "secure enough"
I like the way that he implies that you don't have the right to complain about the 12-character limit at Stardock unless you complain to your bank about the 4-digit credit card pin limitation first.
Auguste··on Instagram Asking For Your Government Issued Photo IDs Now, Too
You can also use a tool like the iMacros plugin [1] for Firefox to automate the deletion of your wall posts, photos, etc., for whatever good that does. It's not like they actually get deleted from the server, but makes me feel a bit more comfortable.

Auguste··on Canonical might switch Ubuntu to rolling releases for 14.04
This has been my experience too. In the end, I found myself more comfortable with slower-moving distributions like Slackware.
Auguste··on Ask HN: Which developer laptop should I buy?
Mine has an IPS panel. It looks great from any angle, but it suffers from a mild ghosting effect when some colours are displayed [1] [2], mostly dark-blue colours. I didn't notice it for the first time until I upgraded to Windows 8, which uses this colour on the lock screen [3]. I have no idea whether this problem is fixed in Lenovo's newer IPS displays, but I find it barely noticeable and rarely a problem.

Auguste··on Aaron's domain registration runs out in Sept. We should archive it in his memory
Don't forget his quote blog.

Auguste··on Git on Windows
I don't get it either. It was only made the default Windows download on www.git-scm.com recently, but msysgit has been around for years.
Auguste··on Poll: What's your favorite static site generator?
That sounds pretty cool. Have you considered publishing it under an open-source license?
Auguste··on 50% off O'Reilly ebooks and videos today
I recommend joining the mailing list too. There's one book on sale nearly every day, and a category (e.g. Python, Ruby, data mining, etc.) every few weeks. If you aren't in a rush to buy your books, keep a wishlist and pick them up as they go on sale.
Auguste··on The amount of crap Windows users have to put up with is incredible
The easiest way to deal with this crap is just to do a fresh install of Windows when you buy a new PC, and download the drivers from the manufacturer's website. That way you can be sure that it's as clean an install as you can get.

Unfortunately, this is complicated by the fact that manufacturers don't ship Windows discs. I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, but perhaps Windows 8's built-in restore feature will be the solution to this problem.

Auguste··on Why the hell does this mouse need to connect to the Internet?
I went through the same experience as you. One day I downloaded the drivers after reinstalling Windows and found it asking for a username and password. The old drivers are still on the site though, just hidden. To find them, follow these steps:

1. Go to http://www.razersupport.com.

2. Scroll down the page, and then click on the Drivers, Firmware And Manuals Download button.

3. From the Main Categories menu on the right side of the screen, click Razer Mice Products.

4. From the Download Categories list, click your mouse series.

5. From the Download Categories list, click your mouse model.

6. From the Download Categories list, click Drivers.

7. If the Legacy drivers are available, they will appear in this Downloads list.

The Naga ones are here: http://www.razersupport.com/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=vi...

Auguste··on Show HN: I built a thing
The name looks like it's from the 'Bridge of Death' scene of Monty Python and the Holy Grail[1] ("Answer me these questions three, then the other side ye see"). I think it's a great name, but most people probably won't get the joke.

Auguste··on The Making of Doom: Id's shooter masterpiece
I read this book around a year ago, and it's one of my favourites. If you've been enjoying the recent Warcraft[1] and Starcraft[2] blog posts from Patrick Wyatt, you'll love Masters of Doom. It doesn't focus on the technical details as much, but it's an excellent story.

Auguste··on Good riddance, PayPal
I've got it tied to a separate bank account that I transfer funds into whenever I want to buy something. I wouldn't ever connect it to my savings.
Auguste··on Good riddance, PayPal
>Is there a reason Amazon Payments or Google Wallet haven't overtaken PayPal in this market?

As a buyer (and not a merchant), I love Paypal because I can have it debit directly from by bank account instead of handing over my credit card information. I hate credit cards, and this combined with Paypal's two-factor authentication gives me some good peace of mind. I haven't seen any other services that provide direct-debit to Australians, and even if they did, they would be useless to me unless they were as ubiquitous as Paypal is. I can use Paypal just about everywhere except for Amazon and O'Reilly. At this point I wouldn't even consider using Amazon or Google Wallet for purchases.

On the other hand, these horror stories have made me very wary of the merchant side of Paypal, and I'd definitely think twice about using them to process payments.

Auguste··on 10 vim color schemes you need to have
Owning ten colour schemes is like owning ten cars. They look really nice and are fun to show off, but at the end of the day, you can only use one at a time.
Auguste··on The coming civil war over general purpose computing

(All the apple bashing on HN is from the google distortion field, it isn't reality.)
Wat?

The world isn't divided into Apple users and Google users. I'm sure I'm not the only person who avoids both, and there's plenty out there who love both.

Auguste··on Windows 8 productivity: Who moved my cheese? Oh, there it is.
Wasn't Aero removed altogether to make way for Metro?
Auguste··on Minecraft experiment devolves into devastating resource war
Why? They are completely different games that share a few similar themes (mining & construction).

Minecraft owes more to Infiniminer, but it has been its own game ever since development on Survival Mode started.

Auguste··on Amazon Glacier
Backblaze does support the optional use of a separate encryption key which they claim to never store, but there's no information about whether it is ever disclosed to them or not. There's little information on their website, but it can be set in Settings > Security in the Backblaze client.
Auguste··on Vim and Vi Tips: Essential Vim and Vi Editor Skills, free on Amazon today only
It's available in Australia. Strange, because it's often considered part of the Asia Pacific/Oceanic region.
Auguste··on Is it a must for every programmer to learn regular expressions?
I think every programmer should have an understanding of what Regular Expressions are, how they can be used, and where to find a cheat sheet or reference (like www.regular-expressions.info).

It helps to know the basic syntax by memory, but you can just as easily look it up if you understand how they work.

Auguste··on Is it a must for every programmer to learn regular expressions?
I find that perfectly readable, except for the \b which I hadn't seen before. It's matching an all-uppercase email address.
Auguste··on The Making of Warcraft, Part 2
If you enjoy these blog posts, you might want to check out 'Masters of Doom' by David Kushner. It's about John Carmack & Romero and id Software's early years (The Johns' childhoods through to Quake 3). Like these blog posts, it's more of a story of the early id team and games than anything else.
Auguste··on Flash Player exits Android
My thoughts exactly. Are they trying to kill their own product? It seems to me that Android is one of the few platforms that would still welcome it.
Auguste··on Dreaming of a Linux Ultrabook? Meet the New ZaReason UltraLap 430
The L512 is 15 inches and has the same resolution.
Auguste··on Dreaming of a Linux Ultrabook? Meet the New ZaReason UltraLap 430
My ThinkPad X220 has the same resolution (1366*768 - not sure where you got 756 from), and so did my ThinkPad L512 before it. I honestly don't mind it at all. Maybe I'm weird or something.
Auguste··on Battle.net hacked, users urged to change their passwords
I assume it means hashes of some sort.
Auguste··on Blizzard Network Breached; Change Your Battle.Net Passwords
How can I change my security questions? I can't find them in the account settings.
Auguste··on "Computer Science" is Not Science and "Software Engineering" is Not Engineering
Most are gone, but there seems to still be a few left up. No idea why.
