AtomicOrbital··on OpenAI drops ban on military tools to partner with The Pentagon
The second OpenAI stopped being a not for profit it opened itself up to the highest bidder namely the military industrial complex ... this danger motivated it's corporate structure which explicitly detailed it did not wish to be a pawn of big corporations

so sad

AtomicOrbital··on Ask HN: Is Firefox team too small to do serious security tests?
yes and it doesn't hurt to be off OSX and Microsoft Windows
AtomicOrbital··on Synthesis Methods Explained: What Is FM Synthesis?
A intuition for creating a lowpass filter ... audio happens in the time domain ... Fourier transform outputs the frequency domain representation of the audio you feed it ... number of audio samples you feed into the FFT call determines the element count of the array returned ... now you have an array of your audio in the frequency domain ... for lowpass crank down to zero array elements above the first quarter of them ... this silences those frequencies ... to render the audio ( generate sound ) feed your edited frequency domain array into an IFFT ( inverse Fourier transform )
AtomicOrbital··on Oxford 'explosion' after lightning strike seen from A34
It blocks ads on Firefox
AtomicOrbital··on It's 2030, & digital wallets have replaced every card in our purses and pockets
America broke free from tyrannical corrupt British over 200 years ago and it shows in our attitudes... of course today's corrupt WEF nutters wish they can dupe us all over again ... not happening and this digital currency initiative is dead in the water
AtomicOrbital··on Nvidia’s AI supremacy is only temporary
just wait until Tesla makes its DoJo into a software-as-a-service
AtomicOrbital··on Nvidia's dominance in AI chips deters funding for startups
however this supplies ever cheaper compute to software startups giving them wind in their sail

AtomicOrbital··on Don't overstate 1.5 degrees C threat, new IPCC head says
Good to see a reasonable candidate ... send aloft either atmospheric particulates or any solar shield to cool the planet ... This is geoengineering ... shovel ready, cheap ... any climate change discussion not communicating this approach is not science based but agenda driven
AtomicOrbital··on War Is a Racket
Best preparation for real war is to continually war on something easier ... I hate the insurance business however low grade war is insurance against real war
AtomicOrbital··on The working-from-home delusion fades
bashing WFH seems to be a meme coming from legacy corporate who sense a loss of control... I've been working remote for 15 years and have no desire to ever again be forced to commute into a cubicle

Quality of life is so much better when remote workers can live anywhere they choose... it may take a generation for management to clue into this reality and fully embrace WFH

AtomicOrbital··on NYC Housing Market Rent Prices Are Skyrocketting
Hard to believe since NYC commercial building vacancy rates historically about 11% are now 20% vacant .... the city mismanaged coronavirus and adversely crushed small businesses
AtomicOrbital··on Why doesn't every cruise ship have a overboard detection system?
People on ships are meshed with sea going wisdom from inception of the sport and so know you do not leave behind a shipmate... every few weeks ship conducted man overboard practice sessions so next time it happens Bingo
AtomicOrbital··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the remote work experiment was a mistake – it’s over
Pre COVID I joined an all remote startup as a very experienced first employee .. phone calls / skyping / email throughout each day always minimum length and minimum participation as needed... the project flourished beautifully... same approach is valid today for similar very early startups

key is only highly productive engineers with track record of fully independent powerful problem solving

never any coding questions as a service during hiring

I've been fully remote for over a decade and never again will take any on location requirement jobs

I taught myself coding by myself while working on a ship pre Internet just me and some books... more important than experience early on is creativity and can do attitude coupled with fortitude and perseverance... I have never assumed failure was bad instead a learning opportunity

AtomicOrbital··on How the Great Firewall of China Detects and Blocks Fully Encrypted Traffic
I'm certain workarounds exist ... encrypt then add non encrypted text atop undoable by receiver for example
AtomicOrbital··on Sounds emitted by plants under stress are airborne and informative
Implication is that they can also listen to such screaming
AtomicOrbital··on A Novel Written by ChatGPT
20 years ago a dream of mine: use AI to read all novels who have been made into movies then watch the movie version... rinse and repeat until the AI can synthesize a movie given any novel

We're still far from this today however this will happen... Can't wait

AtomicOrbital··on Laptop Brands with GNU/Linux Preinstalled
over past 15 years I have installed the then current release of Ubuntu or other distros on dozens of different laptops/desktops and some phones across many brands each attempt success yet some did require googling to discover various incantations of boot up settings... So there is never the need to buy a new laptop with preinstalled linux ... Infact if a given person cannot muster the grit to do a linux install that person is not good material for even becoming a linux user ... Yes 'tis sad but true linux is decidedly not yet ready for the masses ... However no matter this relatively high barrier to entry the pure joy and productivity boosts of using linux easily outweighs the angst of this ongoing hazing ritual of doing your own installs
AtomicOrbital··on US investigates TikTok owner ByteDance’s surveillance of journalists
I am no fan of CCP yet would like to learn whether USA high tech media has a similar tarnished view from perspective of say the average European or Asian in it's inevitable pure capital extraction muscle maneuvers in those regions
AtomicOrbital··on GitHub makes 2FA mandatory next week for active developers

AtomicOrbital··on ChatGPT-Linux-Assistant

AtomicOrbital··on Tesla's next-gen electric motors will get rid of rare earth elements
Say that to a Tibetan and I'd like to hear their response when not watched by CCP secret police
AtomicOrbital··on Ask HN: What useful physical hobbies there are?
and making wine is fun too
AtomicOrbital··on Microsoft Teams is getting big performance improvements next month
Teams linux client is possibly the buggiest application I have used ever ... a close second is perhaps vscode linux client
AtomicOrbital··on A hacking and disinformation team meddling in elections
Nation state government model is obsolete... each person needs to be self governed ... no passport needed... each person must be free to live and work anywhere globally... people must be free to choose who/what they align with... full anonymous... notion of zero trust from information theory to guide all transactions... currency also obsolete... until this full global cutover comes noone is fully actualized ... non human life is the model people need to aspire to ... why let iron age societal dynamics rule is all
AtomicOrbital··on Ohio train derailment: environmental disaster quietly unfolding
Evidently this briefly hit the mass tv news cycle then went silent... This deserves wide scale attention... Pollution and toxic destruction needs to trigger a commensurate fine both for clean up and punitive damages sufficient to motivate big business to proactively avoid these events

Looks like media has been told to drop this story... Or even worse to self censor anything outside it's allowed news topic criteria

AtomicOrbital··on MacType: Better font rendering for Windows
I am hoping this will give better font rendering on windows terminal... win 11 terminal text is very much lacking say in comparison to default gnome terminal on Ubuntu... one of the many strengths of linux is it's high quality terminal ... not just font rendering but sensible double click highlighting

looking forward to running this

AtomicOrbital··on Declassified nuclear test videos are utterly mesmerizing, terrifying (2017)
