AstroJetson··on Designing a Star Tracker for Astronaut Don Pettit to Use on the ISS
So the real magic is the clock mechanism, these guys bolted a 60:90 gear pair and called it a day. How about some kudos to the engineers that made the clock and the company that made them. They can then say to their friends / family, hey one of my clocks is in space. Lots of glory to go around.
AstroJetson··on Before Computers: Notched Card Databases
I used these in an early job to track vacuum tube information and stock.

This is also a good article on them by Kevin Kelly https://kk.org/thetechnium/one-dead-media/

This is the culmination of a rat hole run that started with how Unix did spell in 64kb -> Bloom filters -> Zatocoding (where I went "I used that!") to Edge-notched-cards then the KK and Hackaday articles.

Another hour lost, thanks Hacker News.

AstroJetson··on Rewriting my website in plain HTML and CSS
I cheat with my site.

I write the site in markdown in an html file.

I then include the link for Markdeep (https://casual-effects.com/markdeep/)

Page goes to user, markdeep does all the processing and I'm good to go. The minifed java script file is about 300kb, the size of an image.

AstroJetson··on Show HN: Complete decompilation of Lego Island
Lego Loco was cool in there was a network version that let you send your train to other people.
AstroJetson··on Build a Low-Cost Drone Using ESP32
Is the custom circuit board something that mortals can get made? That seems to be the sticky point to me.
AstroJetson··on Nullboard: Kanban board in a single HTML file
So I went and checked my suggestion on colors. You pulled it, but then never actually implemented it (unless I don't know how to toggle it). Are you going to add colors to the current version or should I go back and retro merge the color code I have?
AstroJetson··on Nullboard: Kanban board in a single HTML file
I have this and like it alot. I've used it since a 2020 post on hacker news. It takes some effort, but once you get past the learning curve.

I'm very color oriented, so my forked version does colors to help me organized. (Yes I've sent it in as a pull request).

AstroJetson··on PLATO: An educational computer system from the '60s shaped the future (2023)
I was at UofD in the 70's as a student and then in the 80's as an employee of the Computing Center. It was pretty cool when Delaware got their own Plato system to run. As mentioned elsewhere recommend "The Friendly Orange Glow" for stories from that era in time.

I worked with Hank Hufnagel to clone Tutor onto the Burroughs system. He worked for months on getting the judging to work exactly like the original. After that it was pretty easy to spin up the rest of the language. With the exception of lessons that required external hardware, porting lessons was easy. The Burroughs mainframe supported running Tutor on the Magnavox Plato terminals and other CRTs (Dumb glass was text only)

One interesting thing was Hank took the judging software and used it to develop a AI like (for the late 70's / 80's) help system that did front line triage for terminal issues, common programming problems, etc.

AstroJetson··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
If I install all my private-passkeys onto my phone, then I have a new problem of Lost, Stolen, Broken to deal with. I’m device agnostic, I want to get to my account from my phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, all I’m doing is spreading the exposure out by needing to install passkeys everywhere.
AstroJetson··on Donald Bitzer has died
I was at the UDel at the early part of Plato. He came a few times to visit. He was a great presenter and interesting to talk to after his talks.
AstroJetson··on Donald Bitzer has died
It's the holiday's so maybe Blitzen?
AstroJetson··on Ask HN: What are the best programmable holiday lights?
I'm a huge fan of the Falcone system. It's a lot more that things that have been posted so far. It's allows you to grow in lots of different ways. The F16V5 costs about $250 and needs a power supply.

This is a simplistic view of what it looks like.

AstroJetson··on SpiderBasic
Like joshstrange I want to love this but it's hard. I echo the comments about the front page. It's a lot of marketing speak, but I could really use a 25 word version on what this is going to do for me and how I'm going to use it.

If I go to the examples, I get the chance to see a ton of example programs. But I'm dumped into an IDE that I've never used. One change would be to put a run button as a top menu choice. It would be really helpful if the programs had a comment at the top about what the program will do.

I also looked in the FAQ pages hoping for a "how does this work" "how do I use this" etc. and also just got two questions about "how do I pay for this".

Josh got downvoted pretty hard, (and I guess I'll follow), but he had some spot on comments.

AstroJetson··on Restaurant Menu Tricks (2020)
I worked in the Buffalo area, and went with friends once or twice a week to lunch. It was the same place. First few times I went, I got a menu, the two of them did not. I thought it was strange, but figured that since they went a lot they had the menu memorized. About the 12th time there, I didn’t get a menu. I thought it was weird, but then I kind knew the menu. Then lunch came and I hadn’t ordered it, but we were talking, so I ate it and it was fine.

But the second time I was WTF?!? I asked and got told by the server that they had remembered what I ate and went from there. The process was: if I wanted to order, when we sat, ask for a menu. They sometimes had specials that were different (not just a marked down chicken dish) then we got menus to see them. Otherwise lunch appeared. It was really kind of nice that they knew what we liked and brought it. We seldom had the same plates which was also interesting.

And here it is almost 35 years later and I still remember lunch there. Miss you Jenny and Dave.

AstroJetson··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
Can you point me to that HVLP gun for under $20. I have purchased two different ones for ~$100 each and they make this list of "things I regret"

I also subscribe to the buy cheap, if you use it alot and it's not working out buy a much better model. I've done that for years and have a hodgepodge of brands that make me happy. The only exception is battery powered tools, I did some research, decided that Dewalt would be a good choice. I didn't want to have 10 different kinds of battery packs around, so picked the battery ecosystem and went from there.

And when I buy a wood chipper, my Fujifilm printer will be the first thing through it. I have wasted more time and supplies to get pictures that look like a 2 year old colored it. So sad.

AstroJetson··on SQLiteStudio: Create, edit, browse SQLite databases
Maybe if a) Oracle did upgrades to SQL-D and b) Didn't charge for SQL-D like it was made of spun Unicorn horn you would have better luck.
AstroJetson··on I Stopped Using Kubernetes. Our DevOps Team Is Happier Than Ever
Wouldn't that give you a prod mix of Kubernetes, Docker, Fargate, Rancher, etc?
AstroJetson··on Show HN: Silent Poems – Visual expression of unspoken thoughts
This was fun, I liked playing with it.

I'd like to ask for a feature that I can pass a query string

wwww.silentpoems.net?poem=How+do+I+love+thee%3F+Let+me+count+the+ways.+I+love+thee+to+the+depth+and+breadth+and+height+My+soul+can+reach%2C+when+feeling+out+of+sight+For+the+ends+of+being+and+ideal+grace.

and have the poem rendered. That way I can send poems to my beloved.

AstroJetson··on Ask HN: Has anyone tried adapting a court reporter keyboard for writing code?
> Mchannon writes: "I can already type on a QWERTY keyboard way faster than I can think."

There are some days with a combo of slow thoughts and a tough problem that my brain can easily be out paced by paper and a crayon or even a quill pen.

AstroJetson··on SQLiteStudio: Create, edit, browse SQLite databases
I went from company F to company V, used Toad at F all the time. I was told at V that Toad was not approved nor money for it. So I bought my own copy. Within 6 months all of the DBA team owned copies of Toad, a few months later V bought it for Developers and paid back all the DBA team for their copies.

AstroJetson··on Setting up TiddlyWiki as a BASIC programming platform
TiddlyWiki is something that I've used before to be a single topic wiki to collect information about what I was researching.

It's cool that I can now imbed Basic programs with my notes.

Jupyter Notebooks for those of us stuck with a 70's programming language?

AstroJetson··on Wordpress.org released Secure Custom Fields "PRO" version with ACF pro features
Ugg. I'd like to hope that Matt had hired better legal advice.

But that didn't happen. Matt this isn't going to end well for anyone. The first rule of holes is "STOP DIGGING" Can you put down the shovel for awhile and try talking to people?

AstroJetson··on First Impressions: Lenovo T14s with Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM64 CPU

Yup, the are awesome, I'm on my second decade of driving them, should be able to get another decade out of the supply.

AstroJetson··on It's 10am and Dad's Doing Jell-O Shots. Must Be Parents' Weekend
Yes, Sunny's I went there more than a few times. I worked in the Computer Center in Maytum. The primary terminal room was in the bottom of the Library. I also taught some of the CS classes. I ate at the Topiary tree more often that I'd like to admit. It was a fun time. It was very creative school with the music and design people everywhere.

Any chance you remember the italian place? It was small, 1/2 was a restaurant, 1/2 was a bar. It was named after the family. Grandma was still working, making really awesome gravy. Awesome sausage sandwiches and Beef on Weck.

My email is in my profile, if you want to chat that way.

AstroJetson··on The business of gutting failed Bay Area tech companies
There is an awesome one in Wilmington DE, its the goto for startups. Very sketchy warehouse off of 12th street (if you pass the prison, you’ve gone too far). But lots of clean stuff, like the last of office stuff from DuPont clearing out all their locations.
AstroJetson··on It's 10am and Dad's Doing Jell-O Shots. Must Be Parents' Weekend
Completely off topic, I lived in Fredonia around that time. I worked at the school, so I pretty much hung out in the townie bars (Coughlan's and an family run bar/italian restaurant I'm blanking on) . What was the big party bar you are talking about?
AstroJetson··on In Memory of Stiver
I also had a huge library of decompiled Websphere libraries. IBM was always sending patches and we would go "ok, what does this do?" "Fixes your problem?""How""Really well." So it got decompiled to see what it did.

There were lots of "We think your patch is doing XYZZY, we see where our code should be doing that. We've updated our code and the problem went away."

Fernflower was awesome. RIP Stiver, glioblastoma can be an ugly way to die.

AstroJetson··on LoRA vs. Full Fine-Tuning: An Illusion of Equivalence
Most search engines are capitalization agnostic, even the one here on HN. I'll have a word with my lawyer, I want to call something iphone, he says that's taken. I'll see if he likes IpHoNe any better to fix the capitalization. :-)
