Apofis··on Ask HN: State of PHP at Facebook?
I used HHVM for a while and it was good before PHP7, but then it quickly became irrelevant once the PHP core and community got their act together.
Apofis··on Windows 11 Pro: about 11% slower than Linux on Intel Core i9 11900K
I wish I could downvote. On what basis do you state this: "which is basically way more functional and has way more features than linux did pretty well" ?
Apofis··on This word does not exist
It's just digital trading cards, like pokemon or baseball cards. Just amateurs are running the show now, but the NBA already got in on this, so if you want something more legit: https://nbatopshot.com/
Apofis··on Despite having just 5.8% sales, over 38% of bug reports come from Linux
We're just used contributing bug reports and pull requests, sort of our thing. It's not as prevalent with Windows or MacOS users, just not part of that culture.
Apofis··on NixOS on Framework Laptop
Why in the world wouldn't Framework use CoreBoot? Very strange.
Apofis··on Self-driving Waymo cars clog up dead-end San Francisco street
Isn't Waymo it's own navigation app? I wonder just how much Google Maps info they use.
Apofis··on Arthritis drug that cost $198 in 2008 is now more than $10k
Can't you order most medicines online if you have a prescription? So you don't even need that plane ticket or to leave your home.
Apofis··on Pioneering work that has changed our understanding of migraines
> It was then that I first learned that my conscious is only a small part of my mind, and not in direct control of everything.

We're made up of disparate systems that our conscience pilots essentially, even our mental faculties are disparate systems. This can sometimes make it hard to recognize when one of these systems is under-performing or worse-yet failing.

Apofis··on Pioneering work that has changed our understanding of migraines
Very interesting case of an insurance company also being a healthcare provider.
Apofis··on Crypto CEO threatens customers after mistakenly sending them millions
Trustless Distributed Finance sounds like money to me, if I was a hacker. Considering the forum we're on and what we know to be the actual state computer security (hint: it's theater), it's pretty laughable.
Apofis··on Reasons to Quit Social Media
This guy is making a lot of inferences based on his own experience and I think he may want to consider hiring a therapist to work through these issues:

"In reality, we hire social media to distract our minds from our unpleasant, average life. And, by faking photos, to convince others, including ourselves, that our life is amazing while internally we are in pain."

If you recognize the pitfalls/dangers of social media, I think you can utilize the platforms if you are mindful without falling for those pitfalls/dangers. Pitfalls such as creating "echo chambers" and "bubbles" with who you follow and further falling for emotional hooks ( Experimental evidence of massive-scale emotional contagion through social networks https://www.pnas.org/content/111/24/8788 )

Apofis··on Leaving the Apple ecosystem behind
I have a really beefy System 76 laptop but after using the Mac Developer Transition Kit, I'm eagerly waiting for the Apple M2-based Macbook Pro. As much as I love Linux and linux-desktop, I miss the polish the MacOS has.
Apofis··on Lab-grown meat may never be cost-competitive enough to displace traditional meat
Honestly, I've been making Impossible burgers at home on brioche buns, butter lettuce, and nice tomato and they're better than pretty much any burger I've ever had (Beyond is 2nd runner up for sure and still super good). I don't want Lab-grown meat and I think it's pretty gross, and I'm a massive carnivore.
Apofis··on How WhatsApp enables multi-device capability
Smells of NSA.
Apofis··on I Failed to Transform the Enterprise
First guy over here! Call Ellison.
Apofis··on Taking part in Y Combinator from Europe: is it worth it?
I don't think you can lose with HBS. If you want to talk scaling and on speak eye to eye with VC's and don't think entrepreneurship is a lottery, then a business school always makes sense. This comes with a but... BUT only if you plan to lead or scale your enterprise. It's only what I see from the outside so far, since I'm just getting ready to dip my toes. Ideas are ideas, everyone has one, like a netherhole. The ability to execute is the determining factor.
Apofis··on NSO Group iMessage Zero-Click Exploit Captured in the Wild
When are we going to start building software differently so that exploits start going away?
Apofis··on Google to pay Apple $15B to remain default Safari search engine in 2021
If they stopped sticking with Yelp, they would fare far better in my book. Reviews are a big part of what makes Google Maps awesome... for travel I use Apple Maps because the GPS voice on Google Maps is obnoxious and I don't like the UI that much, but Google Maps has a big win with reviews.
Apofis··on Tim Cook poised to get $750M final payout from award
You're entirely right and there's some weird anti-capitalism fringes creeping into HNews... which is a really odd place to entertain anti-capitalist views.
Apofis··on FDA Approves First Covid-19 Vaccine
Why isn't the nasal vaccine being produced?
Apofis··on The Problem with Ethereum
The only value argument of Etherium over Bitcoin is that you can have computation on the blockchain, which is a joke when you consider AWS and Azure exists. The rest are delusional details.
Apofis··on Am I stuck in a local maximum?
This may have been incidental but I think I was just triggered for the first time in my life. The far right is now statically typed and dynamic typing is now the left?

/slight tang of sarcasm

Apofis··on Slate – A completely customizable framework for building rich text editors
For those that need something more mature that is very stable CKEditor is a very battle-tested alternative.
Apofis··on U.S. and key allies accuse China of Microsoft Exchange cyberattacks
Yeah, it turned out to be ISIS.
Apofis··on MIT Predicted Society Will Collapse in 2040. Research Shows We're on Schedule
I think it's hooey. China is doing just fine with 1.2 billion people. The US and Russia are no where close to their density.
Apofis··on Legal expert says Tether and Binance Coin are likely picks for SEC lawsuit
Tether and Bitfinex are entirely banned in New York State and I really don't think it will be too long until other states follow suit and likely the SEC too.
Apofis··on GitHub – nushell/nushell: A new type of shell
I used fishshell for years, and the bottom line ended up being that it created enough mental overhead to be a burden because it diverged from the UNIX norm too much. Sort of like the colemak keyboard layout, sounds great in theory, in practice, not so much.
Apofis··on NIH study offers new evidence of early SARS-CoV-2 infections in U.S.
It's interesting that this is a popular enough sentiment to be a pattern.
Apofis··on “The Ethereum community has accidentally solved a major problem of the Internet
And then there's https://gazepass.com, a Passwordless Login API that uses your mug instead.
Apofis··on There are no results for tank man
This is an obvious one to catch for us, I wonder what other foreign censorship makes it's way into our web.
