Apofis··on U.S. State Department phones hacked with Israeli company spyware
I'll simply disagree.
Apofis··on What does a Principal Software Engineer do?
I meant I love the way you phrased it.

A lot of programmers ignore the fact that they're serving a business function.

Apofis··on What does a Principal Software Engineer do?
I'm in love with #9. Looks like you have a good handle on the situation. The rest proves you're going places.
Apofis··on U.S. State Department phones hacked with Israeli company spyware
Yes, but who dictates where and how they can play overseas?

These people are in for a world of hurt, the State Department tells the CIA what to do.
Apofis··on FTC sues to block Nvidia-Arm merger
Arm is British, the FTC and Nvidia are American. Can someone that's not a technocrat explain to me the problem here?
Apofis··on German coalition treaty endorses “Public Money, Public Code” principle
So?
Apofis··on Introducing the Icelandverse [video]
This is awesome. I would totally much rather save up money for a trip to Iceland than for some VR setup from "META".
Apofis··on Will Nix Overtake Docker?
I'm a big fan of Docker-Compose so far because of it's powerful simplicity and it's introducing me to GitOps, Infrastructure-As-Code, and Terraform, all of which I'm really starting to like... and I really hate doing DevOps work.

I think your point is very valid, it has got to be simple and increase productivity instead of impede it. Using something better but getting stuck in the minutia every day is a waste, and not something anybody in senior leadership should ever approve.

Apofis··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
That sounded pretty reasonable until I realized you were talking about that beast of a workstation that can easily be between $25,000-80,000.

Pfft.... 10 minutes to compile, no sweat, not even enough time to brew and drink a tea/coffee.

Apofis··on Seattle residents launch Approval Voting initiative for representative elections [pdf]
I don't support every candidate on the ballot equally because I believe every candidate's abilities to do the job vary. First choice, second choice, third choice is not hard to explain and I do not understand why some people think Americans have been lobotimized. NYC now has run off voting and it turned out marvelously, with Eric Adams being elected.

But I don't support every candidate I would vote for equally.
Apofis··on Seattle residents launch Approval Voting initiative for representative elections [pdf]
Considering our present division, I have a big "spider-sense" tingle that approval voting will simply result in everyone just voting all blue or all red, that sounds like a bad deal to me. Run off voting would give moderates a good chance of putting the country right side up again.
Apofis··on Seattle residents launch Approval Voting initiative for representative elections [pdf]
Just getting rid of first-past-the-post would do wonders for our country and by the looks of it approval voting is inferior to run-off voting by a mile.
Apofis··on YouTube takes down independent court livestreams
I'm not excusing anyone stateside. You guys are pretty deflective of this topic on HN, but I get it.
Apofis··on YouTube takes down independent court livestreams
Foreign interference generally does flow in from US based corporations... I'm not excusing anyone stateside.
Apofis··on Netlify Drop
He's proof that techies overthink things... he's doing $1M+ yearly with nomadlist.
Apofis··on If Apple keeps letting its software slip, the next big thing won’t matter
They're running A/B tests... You like variant A, the majority picked variant B. Otherwise, someone new was hired and needed a project.
Apofis··on YouTube takes down independent court livestreams
Can we get over the notion that foreign state interference is not a thing in our media? There, you have your culprit; outside of other national interests whom social unrest and division benefits. They play both sides, same as the admen. Suddenly, what is happening and why is crystal clear.

Apofis··on The Soviet 1801VM2 LSI-11 Processor
Man, I wonder what that shuttle went for when the Soviet Union collapsed...
Apofis··on Nazca – New GUI for the Web
If anybody ever wanted HTML and JS in their CSS files instead, then nazca is definitely for you.
Apofis··on The strange path of accepting how your brain works
Don't set yourself short on biology, since you're clearly referring to your genetic make-up. Gene-expression is way more complex and a much bigger factor than most people give it credit for. The environment impacts gene-expression quite a bit and I believe it's a big part of learning new things as experience provokes or suppresses gene expression. More to come.
Apofis··on Zillow to stop flipping homes, loses more than $550M, lays off 25% of staff
So? Flip yourself then. Buy a 2 family unit, renovate it while you live in one of the units, and then flip when you're done. Repeat a second time. Now you're set. All of this is folded into your mortgage. If you're not a capitalist, you're not going to have a good time since no one is going to break your doors down to save you.
Apofis··on The Architecture of Open Source Applications: Nginx (2012)
The Let's Encrypt Certbot does this automatically for nginx and apache as well, just with a bit of extra config: https://certbot-dns-cloudflare.readthedocs.io/en/stable/
Apofis··on This word does not exist
All of money is imaginary and all things have a representative monetary value. All of the above are imaginary things. Work from this basis, the rest of this will make more sense. So now if you use your imagination, we can start lining up some value. What value does gold have in World of Warcraft?
Apofis··on Windows 11 Pro: about 11% slower than Linux on Intel Core i9 11900K
I suppose today's that day: I wasn't pretending, since I use all platforms.
Apofis··on Ask HN: State of PHP at Facebook?
Why would you want this when you have blade templates or further down .jsx or .vue templates?
Apofis··on Fedora 35
Nothing in Linux-land excites me anymore as much as running everything in unprivileged userland. Having the most bleeding edge software is overhyped, since it introduces instability into your system... especially if you carefully design it such as with Arch Linux. I can't believe using MacOS 12 and homebrew taught me the values of this. Flatpak or bust!

For example... I have Steam and Chromium happily running in a Flatpak install and it has zero more privileges that my non-sudo user account has.

No sudo in sight and for a start this gives me peace of mind. Zero trust needs to be a bigger deal in the Linux community.

Apofis··on Physics Student Earns PhD at Age 89
The funding that you were granted covered your full traditional salary and not a shoe-string budget? I really want to do graduate studies full time but I'm struggling to figure it out financially.
