Apofis··on Survivors of Utah's eugenic sterilization program still alive in 2023
This is horrific and this sounds very familiar:

> Utah had a particularly aggressive sterilization program. Eugenics leaders, in fact, hailed Utah for sterilizing a far greater proportion of its residents than any other state in 1947 as an "important achievement in public health."

Apofis··on The teen mental illness epidemic began around 2012
You discovered that suffering is relative to experience.
Apofis··on Nobody in Miami Says ‘Latinx’
I think a lot of those things are extremely frivolous, a waste of time, and very silly at best. These aren't things that appeal to the working class. If some rando is using me for some weird political or social clout, I wouldn't be impressed.
Apofis··on Gattaca is still pertinent 25 years later
Can't wait for the Homogenous Elite Society where everyone is a clone of each other.
Apofis··on Ask HN: What should I learn as a 42 year old designer looking to build web apps?

Apofis··on Stop developing this technology
The old: Encryption is evil because it is used to hide information... let's ban encryption. Breaking encryption is evil because it can be used to steal information... let's incriminate breaking encryption.

Let's just get it over with... Technology is evil. Let's ban technology.

Apofis··on What we look for in a resume
TFA: You should be:

- Making commits on github everyday for a year

- Making many pull requests to popular open source projects

- Show commitment!

- Spent 3 years traveling the world before Stanford.

Meanwhile, has no real technical commits/PRs on GitHub herself... ever. No streaks to speak of... ever. https://github.com/chiphuyen

This is such an elitist and superficial article.

Apofis··on NanoGPT
Let's not forget that rendering 3D Animations in 3DSMAX or Maya used to take days for a single frame for a complex scene, and months for a few minutes.
Apofis··on CDC File Transfer
I wonder if they'll open source some of the streaming tech...
Apofis··on Python 2 removed from Debian
I just avoid Python and any job descriptions that contain it. It's never been a good experience for me, whether as an end user or a developer. It's nice that they may have ironed out their issues, but I've been done a long time ago. There's nothing Python does I can't do better with some other toolchain.
Apofis··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
I understand this year they presented much more believable avatars, but yeah presenting Second Life as a next gen experience must have been frustrating for John.
Apofis··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
People with attitudes like yours are why Zuckerberg _WILL_ fail in his vision. If Meta VR cannot be more compelling than video games, it is and will continue to be Dead on Arrival. Good luck though, with your feelings and whatnot. The "avatars" that Mark was forced to present are frankly embarrassing and humiliating in this day and age. 5% GPU utilization is a joke. Mark's gotta give all of you the boot. I'm happy for John that he got to escape that sycophantian paradise.
Apofis··on USDD/Tron near collapse: USDD stablecoin below $0.97, reserve collateral drained
The only USD crypto stable coin coming will be the one released by the US Federal Reserve. Everything else is a lie.
Apofis··on Globalization is dead and no one is listening
Let us unchain ourselves from the politics of globalization and then we can proceed forward. Trade shouldn’t be a weapon.

Apofis··on One does not simply destroy a nuclear weapon
Pretty curious how the anti-nuclear reactor movement went after shutting down all nuclear reactors when we badly need them, they lead to actually dismantling nuclear weapons, and at the same time coal power plants spew a ton of radioactive smoke into the atmosphere.
Apofis··on Gaslighting is Word of the Year 2022
Stop being so dramatic.
Apofis··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
The layoffs and departures on their own are by my count possibly getting close to saving the company a billion $USD a year. That's the projected cost of the debt obligations he took on buying the company. EZPZ.
Apofis··on Oxford University Press’s new logo is unfathomably bad
I can't open a logo generating website and not get that as a result. It's trash.
Apofis··on Meta Meets Microsoft
MS Teams is already a chore, I'm not adding an extra layer of mental overhead on top of it.
Apofis··on Intel and the $1.5T chip industry meltdown
My laptop and iPhone are fast enough… I can’t believe some people would risk a nuclear war over not having the latest iPhone next year.
Apofis··on US Job Outlook for Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, and Testers
Capital One is the only company I've ran across so far that wouldn't take on a developer with equivalent experience, or maybe the recruiter was badly misinformed.
Apofis··on Wearing flashy/status clothes makes people less likely to cooperate with you
Now redo the same study but with Stanford or Harvard branded gear. This thread is hilarious to me.
Apofis··on Rich Text Editor for React
Am I the only dev on the planet that thinks not having CSS editing and a code view makes most of these entirely useless except for simple sites like blogs or comment sections?
Apofis··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
So, who would still show up for work if they didn't pay money?
Apofis··on Toyota unveils 8.7 kWh battery for residential applications
Woah, you can get a 10kWH LiFePO4 Powerwall for $2600. I didn't realize heavy battery tech is that far ahead. Seems rather compact too. That just seems entirely reasonable to install in your garage.
Apofis··on Adapting to Endure – Sequoia Capital [pdf]
I'm assuming you don't really follow the news or the market due to your response.

Apofis··on Adapting to Endure – Sequoia Capital [pdf]
Me thinks you're overstating it because you don't understand how VC's function. Venture Capitalists borrow money from Investment Bankers based on percentages. The market has lost all of its gains during the pandemic, that trend is still bearish. The risk percentages were adjusted, and now there's less money to go around. It's seriously basic math.
Apofis··on Home Assistant OS Release 8
Beauty of open source, make a fork with those pull requests accepted and involve the devs that made them.
Apofis··on Gov.uk drops jQuery from their front end
Does Japan still require Internet Explorer? It's a very weird country webdev-wise.
