on HN, but not of it

Apocryphon··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
If 23andMe's genetic records were acquired (along with the company itself) by a different entity, why wouldn't this data as well?
Apocryphon··on Amazon, which started off selling books, is destroying rare texts to train AI
It used to be breathless startup hype and gossip, which it might still be in some capacity.
Apocryphon··on Amazon, which started off selling books, is destroying rare texts to train AI
Perhaps this is a use case that's worth investigating, to invent better, less-destructive scanning processes! Or some way to rebind them afterwards.
Apocryphon··on Will you have spent more of your life with computers than your family?
Open a restaurant?
Apocryphon··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
You could donate that to the church archives of his denomination or the religious studies department of a university or at least some sort of local historical society.
Apocryphon··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
Okay, then it should be acknowledged if a work was AI-edited-written, or AI-ghostwritten.
Apocryphon··on Ask HN: How do you keep up with HN these days?
Anecdotally it feels like comment threads are a lot like "megathreads" on forums now, where there might be hundreds of replies. Wonder if there's been a surge of users over the last three or four years.
Apocryphon··on Cursor is now a part of SpaceX
Musk pulls a Howard Hughes and goes into Hollywood producing just to bring back that franchise, just just for the letter X.
Apocryphon··on Cursor is now a part of SpaceX
SpaceX, the everything company
Apocryphon··on Defending my own brain against enshittification
> The floor plan of my office is basically glass doors along the perimeter with private offices for executives and cubicles throughout for the rest of us. Highly normcore.

It’s normie these days to have cubicles, instead of being in an open floorplan? Not in Silicon Valley, I don’t think.

Apocryphon··on Amazon circumvents Gilroy community vote for AI data center
In the South Valley, the pre-data center nemesis were distribution hubs, lambasted for the traffic they caused. Ironically also a key component of Amazon’s physical infrastructure.
Apocryphon··on Unions Can Save Tech Workers and Tech Work
One would think the true efficiency gains are better quality cars that last longer and require less replacement
Apocryphon··on Let's all meet up in the Y2K
People like to maximize time they see their families
Apocryphon··on Unions Can Save Tech Workers and Tech Work
Tech workers have the IEEE, and the ACM. We need an IEEE/ACM with teeth.
Apocryphon··on Unions Can Save Tech Workers and Tech Work
Without film industry unions, might the offshoring have been undertaken even earlier?
Apocryphon··on Unions Can Save Tech Workers and Tech Work
For all of the high compensation tech workers can make in specific regions, at specific firms, how is it that they lack the leverage to demand something as basic as remote work, or as simple as not working in open offices? Consider the ubiquitous distaste for the open layout, how it creates distractions, damages flow state, that "no one" actually likes to work in a bullpen. Yet for all the grousing that software engineers do about them, they're still the prevailing industry trend. For like two decades now. In the status quo, where's the worker power to stand against that?

Apocryphon··on Western Sahara
Their lack of sovereignty is blocking the .eh TLD from being realized:

Apocryphon··on Western Sahara
Is it any different from Disney being criticized for filming Mulan (2020) in Xinjiang?

Apocryphon··on Note-Taking and Personal Knowledge Management
Okay, well I don't mean the sense of a perfect notebook that's pristine, so much one that is a panacea for one's knowledge-management needs. Like any productivity trend, it seemed like the bullet journal method inspired a cottage industry of influencers with their bespoke variants and people sharing their journals for the sake of it and heck I'd argue that if there are merchandise- pre-bulleted notebooks sold in stores- then your framework has become a more consumer-driven than pure productivity. But that's no better or worse than GTD, or Zettelkasten for that matter.
Apocryphon··on Note-Taking and Personal Knowledge Management
I think it’s less notebooks or typed notes, and more the issue of cargo cults built around frameworks and systems. Bullet journals are a handwritten PKM, aren’t they? And they were definitely a fad around the fetishized ideal of creating perfect notebooks.
Apocryphon··on On the non-use of AI in my writing process
From the comments:

> I will concede that using LLMs in software development is a different category from fiction, insofar as the languages and APIs are much smaller and more tightly constrained and in software you actively don't want long-range dependencies between elements (something you often do want in fiction, i.e. put a gun on the mantlepiece in part 1 of the book, pull the trigger in part 3).

Apocryphon··on US gov and OpenAI mislabel map of Africa at global conference

Apocryphon··on Half-Life 2 running natively on HaikuOS
Perhaps it’s too much of a reoccurring gimmick but his videos are squarely in the “tech-aware consumer” user profile, not a pro developer or editor. It’s like how LGR does retrospectives and deep-dives on hardware from a purely hobbyist-enthusiast customer perspective.
Apocryphon··on Medici family mystery may be solved after more than 400 years
You could marry your claim to an ideological framework upholding the Divine Right of Kings and traditionalist conservatism, causing it to live for centuries longer in the form of monarchy enthusiast cranks.
Apocryphon··on Which streaming service was that on again
I recently watched a YouTube video from Answers in Progress where the creator made a site that does this using Hostinger:

Apocryphon··on Governments, companies, nonprofits should invest in free, open source AI [pdf]
Do those school bureaucracies require parents of students to attend customer service calls that require multiple transfers over the better part of an hour?
