Apfel··on Show HN: Bulletpapers – ArXiv AI paper summarizer, won Anthropic Hackathon
I competed against these guys in the hackathon, it was absurd how much more polished everything was compared to the rest of us!

Apfel··on Most demographers now predict that human population will plateau
This makes a lot of sense. I think my own city (Glasgow) used to be considerably larger when it was an industrial powerhouse in shipbuilding and textiles and has fairly cheap housing nowadays as a result.

It's been getting a bit more expensive due to Chinese students and also people moving north from England but it's still very affordable compared to most places.

Apfel··on The triumphs and failures of accessible gaming hardware
A question for everyone reading this comment thread (as I assume most will have some interest in accessibility).

Have any of you had any successes in getting your colleagues or organisation to really care about accessibility and not see it as an afterthought?

I find it really hard to get folk on board with a11y efforts, as most people see a11y tests as an annoyance above else.

When I raise it in meetings etc, I get quite a lot of positive responses but no concrete action.

My main means of trying to get this to change so far is to try and get in touch with a group of users with accessibility needs to show my Devs the impact of their work. Any other ideas would be strongly appreciated.

Apfel··on Podman Desktop celebrates 500k downloads
Or a government organisation. Or a charity.
Apfel··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2023)
How come the salary is undisclosed? Seems like a deliberate means to underpay folk?
Apfel··on Borderline personality disorder: a spurious condition?
Great comment, thanks. We've tried to help her break out of it when it starts to kick off. What you said about addressing it at the point the feedback loop kicks in is kind of what we've been trying.

Sometimes it seems to actually work but the condition seems to adapt to any consistent mechanism to calm her down.

Apfel··on Borderline personality disorder: a spurious condition?
Mind if I ask you if you've got experience in this regard? It's a horrible situation to deal with for family members so I'd love to know how to escape the pain we all feel.
Apfel··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
Usage query: It looks like this could get expensive quite quickly. The approach is great, but with GPT-4 especially, could be very difficult. Is it worth using with 3.5 as a first pass then switching prompts to GPT4 once you've got the best prompt?
Apfel··on Workers with less experience gain the most from generative AI
Have been using gpt4 and just copying all the relevant files in with something along the lines of

``` Given these X files, help me assess how best to implement feature Y. Ask any clarifying questions that may assist with writing a best practice solution. *File 1* *File 2* *File 3* ... ```
If the context length is a problem I'll use claude-100k.
Pretty much always results in good quality code.
I'll then typically open a new window context and get it to review according to best practices highlighting missing e.g. error handling or possible edge cases.
Apfel··on Jessica Livingston (2015)
I'm guessing those sites probably ruined their reputation by selling out their users, refusing to listen to them and belittling their genuine concerns about UX and API access.
Apfel··on OpenGL 3.1 on Asahi Linux
Yeah, the M1 MBA was really so out of the norm in terms of value that it's pretty much impossible to find anything like it at the price point. It literally turned me into an Apple person, essentially overnight. I no longer even switch on my windows machines.
Apfel··on School district sues Meta, Google, and TikTok over ‘mental health crisis’
This is probably a very european viewpoint, but I find it amazing how shocked people are by children seeing porn, but don't bat an eyelid when kids are exposed to violence on television or in movies.
The biggest example from my own childhood was WWE (WWF at the time). The simplicity of the scripts etc seemed to be explicitly targeted towards kids who would then, predictably, try to copy the wrestling moves on their friends.
It's a million times more harmful than seeing the human body sans garments.
Obviously there are specific types of porn that I'd be mildly concerned by my child being exposed to, but generally speaking it's the violence and inherently problematic power structures within that are the fundamental issue, not the nudity.
Apfel··on WordPerfect for Unix character terminals
Neovim with the markdown preview plugin does a really really neat job if you haven't tried it.
Apfel··on Judge decides against Internet Archive
Not particularly keen to get in an abortion debate on HN of all places.
That being said, regardless of anyone's political stance, you saying 'because you made bad decisions' is inflammatory, and clearly based on the assumption that the pregnancy was a result of fully consensual sex.
Don't be that guy.
Apfel··on Chinese app included malware to gain competitive advantage
Play store doesn't work in China, so it'll be in the Chinese equivalents, which will be run by the ultimate shady third party (CCP)
Apfel··on Want an unfair advantage in your tech career? Consume content for other roles
As a barely competent Dev who just became senior by actively helping out people who looked like they were struggling in the org slack, I firmly disagree.
It's led to friendships with many many people (and their managers) and a broader understanding of lots of things and is definitely the key to my own career progression.
It's most definitely not my code!
Apfel··on Developer with ADHD? You’re not alone
As someone who was only diagnosed with ADHD in the past year or so, I can verify that hyperfocus absolutely existed pre-medication. If I was interested in something, I could work on it for whole weekends without any sense of time passing. I did get diagnosed in a bit of a panic after I lost my previous role due to ADHD symptoms.
Apfel··on Show HN: A piano chord reference tool
Can't believe how useful this is. I've been working my way back in to learning piano during the pandemic and have been learning songs I like mostly through guitar chords websites and playing the right hand by ear as my sight-reading is atrocious. This will really help my progress with this method for the more complex chords.
Apfel··on Ask HN: Longevity for your parents, what to do?
This was in a major city (Guangzhou). I think China has its own issues with food safety and additives. Very little regulatory action has led to some very nasty stories about adulteration and gastric problems.
I think when I was in China I was basically in a perpetual state of food poisoning for several years.
Apfel··on Spaced repetition can allow for infinite recall
There's something to be said for using strange or even ridiculous mnemonics as a memory aid.
I'd often come up with little stories to teach myself some of the more complex Chinese characters when I was learning quite intensively and found I never struggled to remember those words after doing so.
Apfel··on Skin exposure to UVB light induces a skin-brain-gonad axis and sexual behavior
Can't speak much for Bosnia but in most of South East Asia it's nigh on impossible to find any body wash, sunscreen or moisturiser without whitening products added.
Apfel··on Ask HN: Longevity for your parents, what to do?
I was always struck when I lived in China how young, happy and active the elderly all seemed, even though they were much the same age as elderly folk where I grew up (the UK).
I had a feeling it must be at least partly due to their increased role in child rearing among most families.
This is partly just traditional Chinese culture but probably also comes in part due to the awful working hours most Chinese people tend to face. It's very common to just dump your kids on your parents out there.
It does cause some issues, as the grandparents tend to have more ... traditional parenting approaches (corporal punishment fairly common) but for the elderly themselves it's definitely something they really look forward to in their later years.
Apfel··on TikTok’s Poison Pill
There's an awful lot of cases of people being "disappeared" based on what they've said in WeChat group messages or friend feeds.
Similarly, the PSBs in some cities have used social media contacts as a means of working out which foreign English teachers to do impromptu drug testing on.
Apfel··on Why the Web Won't Be Nirvana (Cliff Stoll, 1995)
I do love Cliff Still, and it's great to see how spectacularly wrong he was on some of this (selling books on the internet turned out to not be quite as preposterous an idea as he thought!).
He was definitely right about the isolation it caused though!
Apfel··on Twitter user sentenced to 150 hours of community service in UK
This is definitely a Celtic Vs Rangers thing rather than an England/Scotland one.
Unfortunately we in Glasgow are still dealing with this nonsense in 2022.
Apfel··on The Gov.uk Design System is now live
Realistically, it's just Jinja2 ported to js. If you've ever worked with Django or flask it's very quick to pick up.
Apfel··on The Gov.uk Design System is now live
Would be nice if they'd get around to developing a standardised calendar-based date picker component for, say, appointment booking at some point.
Feels like a huge gap in their offerings.
Apfel··on Ask HN: Do people still use Meetup?
I run a Mandarin Chinese meetup with a few hundred members every week in the UK. We've had several new contributing members post pandemic and everything is pretty rosy. Meetup.com still works as a means to get new users
