AnssiH··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
> Like, where were they years ago saying “hey TikTok, we think your design is addictive and probably illegal, you need to change or face penalties.”

That is basically what happened today. No penalties have been issued at this point.

Also Commission had sent various requests for information to TikTok in 2023 before they opened these proceedings in early 2024 (https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_24_...) - this didn't come out of the blue.

AnssiH··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
On Windows XP this depended on whether you had joined a domain. On joined systems you got the security screen (same as previous Windows NT/2000), on other systems the task manager (same as Windows 9x).
AnssiH··on BirdyChat becomes first European chat app that is interoperable with WhatsApp
Generally yes.

I guess a phone/app could exist that does convert to MMS instead, though, since the app can make that decision.

AnssiH··on IPv6 is not insecure because it lacks a NAT
Regular phone plans on my carrier have a private IPv4 address behind CGNAT.
AnssiH··on IPv6 is not insecure because it lacks a NAT
> These mobile phone providers do not let the gazillion consumer smartphones act as servers for obvious reasons.

FWIW, I was interested so I tested this on my phone here in Finland (Elisa, the largest carrier here): IPv6 inbound TCP connections work just fine, unlike IPv4 which is behind CGNAT.

On mobile broadband (no calls) plans they also offer optional free public IPv4 address, but not on the regular phone plans.

(I did the test by installing Termux from Play Store, then in it running "pkg install netcat-openbsd" and "nc -6 -l 9956" and then connecting to that port from internet using telnet, while phone was not connected to WiFi.)

> Doesn't Amazon shipping have to go to the billing address on the credit card?

No, I've had stuff shipped to plenty of addresses.

On Linux, the maximum length was doubled to 256 in v5.1 (2019-05-05).
AnssiH··on Valorant's 128-Tick Servers (2020)
> In Valorant (similar to Counter Strike), at the start of the game you have 60 seconds to buy your weapons and abilities for the round. Valorant/CS is typically a best-of-13, and before each round is a 60 second "buy" period.

Valorant's buy phase is 30 seconds, with +15sec at start of match and halftime.

AnssiH··on Amazon to end commingling after years of complaints from brands and sellers
No, it is not true, just a common myth.

In the seller documentation they say they can track the source of commingled inventory - they achieve this by never putting them on the same physical shelf location.

Also mentioned by Amazon spokesman in e.g. this article: https://archive.is/ra6RT

> Amazon can also track the original seller of each unit

AnssiH··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
It is not fixed.

In the thread you linked to people are confusing a typo correction ("mas fixed" => "was fixed") as a claim about this new issue being fixed.

The one that was fixed is this similar old issue from years ago: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/172048751

AnssiH··on Starlink User Terminal Teardown
> But it just doesn't work like that for DOCSIS or GPON where the cable modems or ONTs these days do much more than just media conversion - SIP, PPPoE, IGMP, etc. even if they don't do Wi-Fi (so ISPs don't call them "routers" - except SingTel, which uses "ONR" to distinguish these units because they are in fact routers for IPTV and SIP).

At least in Finland the norm is that you can use your own DOCSIS modem from any manufacturer, you just tell the ISP your modem's MAC address.

Not for GPON, though.

AnssiH··on LineageOS 22
AFAIK the Android binary blobs are generally userspace, not kernel drivers.
AnssiH··on Single-packet race condition breaking the 65535 byte lim
AFAICS this is about exploiting race condition bugs that require a large number of requests to be processed almost-simultaneously.
AnssiH··on Thanks FedEx, this is why we keep getting phished
Does not answer your question, but related:

In Finland you can declare DHL/UPS/Fedex packages yourself with customs and pay directly to them, with no fees to carrier (it took a Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority decision in 2017 to get rid of the fees, though). But this is a bit different as it is not a hidden option but standard procedure (though you still get the option of paying the carrier to declare, instead).

Declaring inbound packages to Customs by yourself was already the standard here for postal parcels even before Customs internet services, so this was not a completely new way of working.

The paravirtualization option affects the interface presented for the guest operating system for dealing with being virtualized.

This new code is about using different virtualization technology on the host system.

AnssiH··on Bluetooth stack modifications to improve audio quality on headphones without AA (2019)
Indeed, there is some (usually much smaller, but depending on buffer sizes) audio delay even in regular desktop systems so video players and audio APIs mostly already had proper handling for it.
AnssiH··on Amazon to add limited ads to Prime Video starting in early 2024
> ...and the no-ads tier is only available in the US.

That's not what the announcement (https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/entertainment/prime-video-u...) says:

> We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* for U.S. Prime members and will share pricing for other countries at a later date.

From the regulation, Article 3:

1. An undertaking shall be designated as a gatekeeper if:

(a) it has a significant impact on the internal market;

(b) it provides a core platform service which is an important gateway for business users to reach end users; and

(c) it enjoys an entrenched and durable position, in its operations, or it is foreseeable that it will enjoy such a position in the near future.

2. An undertaking shall be presumed to satisfy the respective requirements in paragraph 1:

(a) as regards paragraph 1, point (a), where it achieves an annual Union turnover equal to or above EUR 7,5 billion in each of the last three financial years, or where its average market capitalisation or its equivalent fair market value amounted to at least EUR 75 billion in the last financial year, and it provides the same core platform service in at least three Member States;

(b) as regards paragraph 1, point (b), where it provides a core platform service that in the last financial year has at least 45 million monthly active end users established or located in the Union and at least 10 000 yearly active business users established in the Union, identified and calculated in accordance with the methodology and indicators set out in the Annex;

(c) as regards paragraph 1, point (c), where the thresholds in point (b) of this paragraph were met in each of the last three financial years.

("core platform service" is explicitly defined to include social networking services)

AnssiH··on NIST is announcing that SHA-1 should be phased out by Dec. 31, 2030
I don't think so, unless you utilize some not-yet-public vulnerability.

As far as I know, with current public SHA-1 vulnerabilities, you can create two new objects with the same hash (collision attack), but cannot create a second object that has the same hash as some already existing object (preimage attack).

AnssiH··on C23 Implications for C Libraries
No, the ABI issue is fundamentally there regardless of what compilers did or didn't do.

If you have an interface that has a function that e.g. takes an intmax_t parameter (and even the C standard has those, e.g. imaxabs()), increasing intmax_t size (ABI change) would break existing callers.

So you can only change intmax_t size if you do not care about ABI stability.

AnssiH··on Use this kernel parameter in your kiosk
In addition to those already mentioned, one way is to enable it in systemd:

  # /etc/systemd/system.conf.d/foobar.conf
  [Manager]
  RuntimeWatchdogSec=60
When used in this manner, if systemd fails to ping the watchdog for 60 seconds, the system resets.

https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd-sys...

Somewhat related, nowadays by default systemd enables a 10-minute watchdog just before a regular reboot (i.e. after everything has been shut down) to ensure the reboot happens even if there is a hang for some kernel/HW reason.

AnssiH··on Commission proposes to accelerate the rollout of instant payments in euro
Depends on the bank. My bank processes regular free bank transfers as instant if supported by the destination bank.
AnssiH··on Writing systemd units that stop gracefully before shutdown
The "Before=shutdown.target" is superfluous, that is a default dependency (as regular services obviously need to be shut down before system shutdown).

"KillMode=none" shouldn't be necessary, unless your command leaves processes running that need to stay running (and in that case you have other problems, since those processes may not actually finish before the system is shut down). Systemd waits for your service to stop before reaching shutdown.target (per the default Before= and Conflicts= dependencies).

Since your command probably needs networking, you also want "After=network.target" to ensure your command runs before network is torn down, as covered in sibling comments.

AnssiH··on Writing systemd units that stop gracefully before shutdown
They need After=network.target, not Before=network.target.

The shutdown order is the reverse of startup order, and they execute the payload on shutdown (ExecStop).
