Anon_Forever··on Total data loss after botched GitOps and failed backups
Terraform has had the "prevent_destroy" functionality for quite some time. Highly suggest using it for everything you're going to miss if it's gone.

Anon_Forever··on California population size projected to stagnate
>There is lots of housing outside of the Bay Area and other expensive cities.

And they're similarly more expensive than the majority of the US. Housing in Stockton [0] is more expensive than Houston [1].

>As in the rest of the country. Climate change and soaring energy costs isn't a California-specific problem. Look at the TX grid for example.

It most definitely is a California-specific problem. California is only bested by Hawaii for total energy prices, and is the most expensive in the continental US [2]. California also has the second highest hours of power outages.

California power is hilariously expensive compared to every Southern and Southwestern state. More than double in most cases.

Anon_Forever··on Hackers can get your IP through Skype by just sending a link, no click required
I haven't used Skype in close to a decade. No one that I know uses Skype. All the former Skype users have moved over to WhatsApp, Discord, etc.

Who is using Skype in 2023? How many users are still using Skype?

Anon_Forever··on Hackers can get your IP through Skype by just sending a link, no click required
>but "network" itself is an abstract concept.

This is incorrect. IPv6 network routing prefixes are not an "abstract" concept. They are effectively the same PII as an IPv4 address. You can identify a user by their routing prefix, much like you can identify a user by their IPv4 address. All of their devices will have IPv6 addresses from their unique prefix much like all of their devices will have the same unique IPv4 address if they're using NAT.

Anon_Forever··on HashiCorp switching to BSL shows a need for open charter companies
>I can think of a few:

Think of a few what?

You listed a bunch of links to GitLab CE, which is not their enterprise offering, does not compete with their enterprise offering, and has an order of magnitude less functionality and no support. Again, their enterprise offering is already under a proprietary license.

GitLab openly supports anyone deploying and managing GitLab CE: https://hub.docker.com/r/gitlab/gitlab-ce

Not sure what you're alluding to?

Anon_Forever··on HashiCorp switching to BSL shows a need for open charter companies
GitLab will never go BSL. It has zero reason to. Its enterprise offerings are already under a proprietary license.
Anon_Forever··on Police are getting DNA data from people who think they opted out
In our lifetime, there will be a government system that will record DNA data for every baby born. It'll happen, just a matter of time.

Spot on chungy! I wish this was better thought out and implemented. There's a lot of room for improvement in this area.

>The XDG config/data spec was made to manage systems that mount over NFS

Which makes sense in theory, but the execution is horrible. The ~/.cache directory is also on NFS now... You NEVER want cache on NFS.

>~/.local would stay on the local workstation

Never seen this in practice. This dir is also created on the NFS share, which it should be, since you need to bring these files to other machines as well. The standard is poorly thought out and poorly implemented.

Anon_Forever··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
>XDG is a freedesktop standard that's been adopted by systemd

A systemd standard, we covered that. Great reason not to use it.

>It's absolutely no skin off your nose to adopt it

It is if I have to implement logic to support this shitty "standard".

>beneficial to you and your users if you do.

Poorly thought out and imposed standards are not beneficial to anyone.

Anon_Forever··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
>Practically universal

"I use Ubuntu and develop in full stack JavaScript so everyone else does too."

No, it is not "practically universal". Alpine Linux, MacOS, FreeBSD, illumos UNIX distros, etc. do not follow this imposed "standard".

>Even if there's a Linux distro going out of it's way not to set them

You have this backwards. The systemd standard is imposed on Linux, not the other way around.

>In practice I've never encountered users with a distro that didn't have these variables set.

"I use Ubuntu and develop in full stack JavaScript so everyone else does too."

Anon_Forever··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
XDG is a systemd standard that's not universally used across Linux distributions. It's most definitely not used in other UNIXy systems like FreeBSD and MacOS. XDG, like systemd, likes to believe it's universal but it's not.

Anon_Forever··on The internet didn’t kill counterculture, it's just not on Instagram (2021)
If you have the support of almost the entirety of academia, half of the political establishment, the highest levels of government, multinational corporations, etc. you're not the counterculture "resistance"... You're the evil empire.
Anon_Forever··on The internet didn’t kill counterculture, it's just not on Instagram (2021)

Anon_Forever··on The Military Recruiting Crisis: Even Veterans Don’t Want Their Children to Join
>It's very interesting to read narratives like this online, and how vastly different it is actually talking to people.

That's what happens when you don't step out of leftist bubbles.

>Here's the simple reality: the US military is useless to join for young men because they cannot guarantee you a home anymore.

That's been true for a long time, even before this precipitous drop in recruitment.

>Which were their actual base, poor men who were desperate and had no other option. Exploitation.

That is false. It's a narrative parroted often by leftists, but it's not reality. The poor are underrepresented in the US military.

>Men killing themselves isn't about "open discrimination".

No one said that. Go back and read my comment.

Anon_Forever··on The Military Recruiting Crisis: Even Veterans Don’t Want Their Children to Join
A large part of the failure to recruit is a gigantic 500 pound gorilla in the room no one wants to acknowledge:

Young Southern White men make up the bread and butter of the military. They have been the target of recruiting campaigns for decades upon decades. This group has collectively checked out of a society that has nothing but contempt for them. When the highest levels of the government and half of the political establishment have nothing good to say about you, opine about how "toxic" your existence is, and openly laugh at your struggles... who would want to put their life on the line for that? When patriotism, their basic existence, etc. are derided as "fascist", then why even give a shit? When you're suffering from record levels of depression, dying from suicide and drug overdoses at rates never seen, still being openly discriminated against and laughed at, supporting the system that not only allows, but encourages that behavior is ridiculous.

Effectively, the US Military is experiencing a variation of "go woke, go broke". Guess they couldn't find enough Emmas with two moms to fill their ranks. I guarantee we'll see the US government start to peel back DIE initiatives to fill their ranks back up.

Anon_Forever··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
SLES is worse than RHEL in my eyes. Their support is horrendous, absolutely the worst in the industry. Their early move to btrfs caused so many headaches at client sites. I haven't trusted their technical decision making since.
Anon_Forever··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
Probably not, at least not initially. Hopefully we see more usage of distros like Alpine out in the security field.
Anon_Forever··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
RHEL isn't a choice for a lot of us. If you work in finserv/government (especially DoD), many/most of the time RHEL is effectively the only option.
