Angostura··on Holden's Lightning Flight
Tongue in cheek dry humour, nothing more. "That wasn't a very good idea was it old chap?"
Angostura··on LLM Judges Verify Presence, Not Absence: Omission Blindness in AI Clinical Notes
Interesting. My initial thought was “this is so horribly written it must be human”
Angostura··on EFF to Courts: Don't Rewrite Copyright over AI Hype
Big studios will love this

They’ll come across some talented little band playing some nice new tune in a tiny club, record it on their phone and give it to one of the existing boy-bands to play.

No need to sign up aspiring artists any more - just take their songs.

Of course it’s the boy band that will sell the merch and the concert tickets.

Angostura··on Harvest (IBM 7950): Supercomputer for cryptanalysis at the NSA in the Cold War
There was also the semi-mythical PowerPC 615 that was meant to have both PowerPC and x86 instruction sets. W
Angostura··on RAG Is Simpler Than You Think
I found the piece interesting, once I worked out what it was about. I strongly disagree that taking time to spell out acronyms should be taken as a signal that an article is low level.
Angostura··on RAG Is Simpler Than You Think
I have a particular antipathy for articles too lazy to spell out acronyms on first use.

Angostura··on Don't Wordle
If you enjoy clicking things you can spend hours in their cookie consent boxes untickinv the several hundred individual ‘legitimate interest’ tick boxes for individual vendors
Angostura··on A U.S. Strategy to Prevent the Creation of Mirror Life
Could someone outline the threat to me? If mirrror life can only use mirror molecules as a source of nutrient - which are unavailable for use by conventional organisms, it feels like an infection risk is limited.
Angostura··on St Lucie Nuclear Reactor Unit 1 manually shutdown, 3 control rods drop into core
The final paragraph of the article

> According to NextEra Energy, Unit 1 at St. Lucie is back online at 100% power after operators safely resolved an equipment issue.

I wish the article had said where on earth St Lucie is. Never heard of it

Angostura··on Tim King, AmigaDOS developer, has died
I knew him as the founder of UK Online - only met him a few times but he seems a really friendly, helpful guy. Sorry to hear of his passing
Angostura··on 2026 Eclipse Webcams
My electric company are paying me to discharge my solar batteries during the eclipse. Nice
Angostura··on Show HN: iPhone app takes simultaneous images from 2 lenses, fuses into 1 photo
I quite happily pay quite a lot for apps. The number I subscribe to is tiny
Angostura··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
Apologies, I re- read my comment. It’s missing a rather important “no”

Should have said “no heightened risk”. Looks like it’s impossible to edit or delete now.

Angostura··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
Just for context all the major studies I’m aware of show heightened risk of miscarriage from Covid vaccines.

…unlike the risk from catching Covid itself

Angostura··on Run Android ARM64 VR APKs on Apple Vision Pro
I'm interested in contrary informed views. I was interested in your view until your third sentence, when it became apparent that you're just making stuff up.
Angostura··on Run Android ARM64 VR APKs on Apple Vision Pro
I’ve never found them user hostile. They just sell appliances that do a thing.

If you don’t want that thing don’t buy it. If you do want that thing, it dies it pretty well.

I don’t have an iPad. My wife uses her, a lot.

Angostura··on DeepMind's WeatherNext model achieves breakthrough forecasting cyclones
Yes. My incompetence in maths strikes again. I knew it wasn't right as I typed it
Angostura··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
If they are targeted at older patients, I'd expect them to be a sensible starting point for older patients
Angostura··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
As I understand it, the FDA doesn't regulate melatonin as it's not sold as a medication, but as a supplement.
Angostura··on DeepMind's WeatherNext model achieves breakthrough forecasting cyclones
30% more time to know exactly where to board up etc. seems very significant
Angostura··on IBM i (OS/400) the Database Operating System
Amusingly, however - IBM did produce - or worked on - a Laptop AS/400, based on PowerPC for purely internal use. I believe it was designed for sales/marketing types to take on the road for demos
Angostura··on Is AI reasoning right for the wrong reasons?
I think the article is a lot more interesting than you make out, because it isn’t really about ‘what we mean by reasoning’.

It’s about do we really know what’s going on in the box - an is the ‘chain of reasoning’ indicative of what’s going on, or merely an anthropomorphised fiction that kids us into believing we understand what’s going on.

Angostura··on Azulejo
Annoying article in that sentence 2 mentions temperature control and that’s the last mention
Angostura··on LLM Honeypot
I’m going to submit this to Mirsky’s Worst of the Web.
Angostura··on Delayed Gratification – Proud to Be 'Last to Breaking News'
The BBC doesn’t have a ‘CEO’ if you mean the Director General, there wasn’t one appointed in 2017. Tim Davie was appointed in 2020, with Matt Brittin appointed recently.

Possibly you mean David Clementi who was appointed in 2017 as Chair of the BBC, but he was a financier, with no background in journalism tabloids or otherwise, so not sure what you are talking about.

Laura Kuenssberg hasn’t been political editor since spring 2022. The political editor is Chris Mason.

I’m going to take the rest of your comments with a pinch salt.

Angostura··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
I have a 2026 LG, attached to the internet - absolutely no ads. You need to tweak the settings
Angostura··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
I have mine attached to the internet, but it does take a good 30 minutes plus Googling to find out all the places that you have to turn stuff off.
Angostura··on It's a shame what's happened to radio
I cherish BBC Radio.
