AndyJames··on Adminer: Database management in a single PHP file
It's just faster. For many people, including me, clicking trough the DB and figuring out stuff in GUI is faster and easier that doing it from CLI. Usually I still execute final query manually either trough CLI or Adminer but figuring out what have to be done I'm doing trough GUI. Even things like searching records or editing single entries are easier and faster in GUI.
AndyJames··on Adminer: Database management in a single PHP file
I'm using it for at least last 6 years. I completely ditched PHPMyAdmin in favor of Adminer. An excellent light weight tool that can run wherever there's PHP running. Just one file (two if you like themes like me) and it's working.
AndyJames··on Skiing Mt. Everest
It's more like a man who skied a bit of Mt Everest then tumbled down a bit more and walked the rest
AndyJames··on Van life (cancer edition) finale
He's planning euthanasia, he just want to do it before cancer gets him, so yeah if doctors suddenly says "you have couple weeks left" then it's either now or cancer will get him first
AndyJames··on Event-driven access to my home after a run
This is fixing that one precise incident he had, nothing else. He said that he came back from the run, turned on screen and the phone shutdown. With this solution the phone would open doors automatically. Cool project but it solves such narrow issue. It's like centering text in editor by adding spaces.
AndyJames··on Shodan 2000
If that's any indication of what could be on that system I say it's good it got ransomware
AndyJames··on How to set up a router's port forwarding for a nintendo switch console
It's official support document on Nintendo's official website about their newest console. There's not "posted on" date so it's current. Maybe it's not required but it's recommended by Nintendo which is bad and it would still be bad 5 years ago on lunch of the console. It's not like in 2017 it was OK to open all ports on your router.
AndyJames··on Tell HN: AWS appears to be down again
Not really. If there's no local law against it then it's legal especially outside the cities.
AndyJames··on (mac)ostalgia – how Spotify, Slack, Chrome, Figma could look on Mac OS 9
Everything goes JS (and derivatives) now. At some point we decided to throw cores and RAM at the problem instead of optimizing for speed with limited resources in mind.
AndyJames··on (mac)ostalgia – how Spotify, Slack, Chrome, Figma could look on Mac OS 9
Yes, the resolution could be higher but for me almost all of the apps (except Zoom) looks great. I would love to have that option today. Old design is much thinner and clearer. Buttons are buttons, they're visible and easy to click, almost every decoration is minimal, they're not taking unnecessary space just for sake of it. This is why I didn't like anything after Windows 7, this is the reason why current Gnome is is just wasteful. I much prefer simplicity and "smallness" of Gnome 2 UI hence I'm using Mate as my daily driver
AndyJames··on Design evolution of the Windows control panel
IMHO Windows XP classic view was the best from what Windows offered. To be fair, every design between Windows 95 and XP classic view was good. Icon view was Windows oldschool design that just worked. They could add categories, kind of like OSX did at some point and just leave at that.
AndyJames··on Ain't no party like a third party
That's actually skew in another direction. If marketing is not generating sales they're generating job for them self instead.
AndyJames··on Ask HN: How to get the attention of a human at Meta/FB?
Correct answer right here. It's also beneficial do be at least 100 million dollar company
AndyJames··on Ain't no party like a third party
If you want to sell your product/look for investors you need analytics. The easiest way is to just slap Google snippet in there. If you decide not to do it you're off to self hosted analytics solutions which are just not comparable to google. Building small sites, blogs, informational sites is pretty easy without 3rd party scripts but when you're going into mid size ecommerce (by mid size I mean company that have decent advertisement and sales research budget) it's getting way harder to stay away from 3rd party analytic and marketing tools.
AndyJames··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
For me it's the Rails Cast Theme especially version for Sublime Text that is ideal. I wish it would be much widely available

AndyJames··on Ask HN: Anyone else getting a 500 on their Google Calendars?
Status pages of big companies like Google, Facebook etc. seems to never work. They are all green even when no one can access the service
AndyJames··on Why is Control Center on Monterey listening on ports?
It's just a pain in larger organizations that's all. I met developers in my life that have no idea how any of the dev env work, they just code, so if setting up docker dev instance fails because of their machine it require someone else involvement and modifications in docs for the future. It's not a big deal but it may be pain in the ass for some organizations.
AndyJames··on Why is Control Center on Monterey listening on ports?
1-1024 are reserved for root so you can still technically use them. Port 0 is the only one truly reserved/impossible to used
AndyJames··on Ask HN: Anyone have any idea John Carmack's dentiment on Meta?
Is this the talk you're referring to? https://youtu.be/BnSUk0je6oo?t=912
AndyJames··on Ask HN: Advice on Colocating Servers?
Find colo with 24/7 access, high up time (good networking, multiple connections to the internet from independent providers and proper setup for working when there's no power) and "remote hands" in case you need to manually reset server.

Rest of the questions you have to answer yourself. Initial server cost will be way higher than VPS plus maintenance and paying for colocation is also not cheap. Servers will have to be upgraded every ~5 years, depending on the scale and you have to buy machine for the worst case scenario, there's no automatic scaling so if you sometimes need 32 cores and 1TB of RAM you have to buy that even if 99% of the time it will sit at idle.

I would rather find cheaper VPSes for non-critical systems or work on optimization of current solution.
