AndrewKemendo··on St Lucie Nuclear Reactor Unit 1 manually shutdown, 3 control rods drop into core
Which indicates that there’s so much understanding of how it works and the power that it uses that compensatory systems have been created to increase its reliability

what precisely is your point of describing how quality production engineering for infrastructure works?

The fact that you conflate LLMs and AI means you’re unqualified to be part of the discussion

Correct interpretation
AndrewKemendo··on The weekend is 100 years old
The lack of understanding about the change in day-to-day life over the last 200 years is truly unfathomable - I fully do not understand it but the little that I appreciate is absurdly profound in the differences

It’s like we’re living on an entirely different planet than the people who existed prior to the industrial revolution

Bertrand Russell’s grandfather was alive during napoleon’s rule and he speaks about the difference between 1950 and 1900:

It’s great that nuclear power safety events are so well managed that nearly 100% of events go completely unnoticed by the public.

Unironically this is the kind of headline I’m expecting in 2040 about one or more major AGI systems running an electrical grid, factory or similar.

You can do this test yourself at home see if you can find mutual agreement among even a small subset of people on a precise singular definition of a singular term.

You may be able to get a handful of people to agree temporarily but that’s probably as good as you’ll ever get

I don’t believe there is a single word at least in the English language where there is consistent Universal agreement on a singular definition

Bonne chance!

AndrewKemendo··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
The fatal flaw in your argument is that none of the measures that you’re using actually have any impact on real world day-to-day power

otherwise slave camps would not exist, there would’ve never been a pogrom, and the current state of economics would just not be happening

I certainly appreciate your optimism but optimism is not an epistemology

AndrewKemendo··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
> Why do we need universal agreement?

Because actions have Universal impact

AndrewKemendo··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
You would first need a universal agreement on what constitutes “honor.”

No harder challenge had ever been accomplished

It’s easier to send a human to the moon than to get global agreement on a definition

Consider that the fact that Celsius and Fahrenheit still remain as the contested regional variations of temperature measurement.

Humans can’t even decide on a collective way to measure the temperature the idea that we would be able to collectively agree on anything else even less measurable like honor is a dream

It's not cynicism it's history
AndrewKemendo··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
AI and eventually AGI is by definition like everything else that is based on environmental reward:

It’s actions are based on what it gets rewarded for

Human society overwhelmingly rewards lying cheating and stealing.

All you have to do is look at how we collectively measure success: wealth, status, position

Then look at how the people with the most of those things got there, it should be obvious what you get. Nothing new here.

If you raise children in an environment where they are rewarded for doing whatever it takes to win, then you’re going to build a person that’s going to do whatever it takes to win.

Human society has to demonstrate how to live honorably or it will just keep producing pathological agents be they human or not.

> The longer this war lasts, the more experience we gain. We had never seen a real war to gain real experience to learn how to fight with America. In these five months, we have learned how. We have also seen how the American military is weaker than what we perceived.

This is the most salient point and shows this guy understands the ooda loop — possibly better than the pentagon, which famously hates Boyd and the concept of strategic optimization.

Correct they fail in any out of boundary condition which is like 50% of cases in my experience

Even worse is that the human is usually just as worthless because the problem is often upstream at the insurance provider or regulation

This is something I’m finding with people complaining about AI systems the AI system in this case is not any worse than the previous IVR system was it just expanded the use cases and now people say oh it doesn’t work for those expanded use cases

There’s no mention whatsoever of the current absolute devastatingly bad state of all software across the world

It’s like people are mad when there’s an application that already sucks, someone attempts to use genAI, that fails and then they blame AI

The whole thing is absurd

AndrewKemendo··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
I’m aware of your argument and disagree. I know plenty of people who are unhoused and have no intentions on becoming housed anytime soon.

Whether or not you agree with that philosophy or not living by yourself in a tent in the forest is absolutely an option

“My post, and the GP post I'm agreeing with, are saying that most of those aren't optional "lifestyle upgrades"”

My disagreement is that they are optional, like everything else in life

You aren’t willing to take the tradeoff of not having indoor plumbing or whatever but the claim that using modern technologies and living according to capitalism isn’t an option is incorrect

Ultimately that’s a choice among infinite options

AndrewKemendo··on Kinney Drugs pulls back AI phone assistant after hundreds of customer complaints
Explain to me then why pharmacies have almost exclusively used IVR based phone systems for pharmacy refills and prescription management for the last decade?

Like they don’t even say the full name of the prescription they just tell you the first three letters and they’ll say “for the patient born on…”

Current pharmacy IT systems are currently almost 100% automated so how are you claiming it’s the first use?

But that’s not the same world

The current world has different technology and economics

In order to match the same lifestyle of the past you would have to be subject to the economic and technological structure of the past

Which you can emulate and it is objectively cheaper but you choose

This is literally the operational principle of the Amish and mennonite communities

AndrewKemendo··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
I agree with you and the math checks out

The challenge is that this is a hard argument to make to most people because they aren’t aware of the hedonic treadmill

I could easily afford the life my grandfather had in 1950, but I wouldn’t have a fuel injected motor, vaccines, a laptop or a job in computing.

My air would be full of lead and my drinking water would be cloudy and smell like sulphur.

That life is possible in San Angelo Tx today on ~15,000 a year, the equivalent of his salary in 1950

In my experience you can’t get there through external sources

You need to be accepting and prepared to die in every sense of the word in order get there

Which means you need to shed your ego entirely and everyone has their own journey there.

You’ll know when you meet someone that has experienced it though it’s very rare
