See, thats more constructive! :) I figured it belonged here, especially since a lot of people are probably still interested in learning things like this, I was not aware of a reddit for this.
Not everyone went to university, and people have to learn from somewhere. It is also only an introduction, there will be more complicated data structures shown soon, and algorithms. No point in jumping into the heavier stuff. Trying to help people who are new to C.
Thanks for your input, this is the route I will be taking the product in then, as you can see from my post, support is what I was thinking. Having two replies to second my opinion is good confirmation I guess.
Support it will need to be, I don't intend offering extra functionality to wealthier people. I would actually be fine with giving free support, but I know how busy that gets! and bills do need to be paid.
Where are these rules? I was "showing" HN users that may wish to learn to code in C some information. I intend continuing that too... Unless you can show me rules that say I can't. Its not like its some ad campaign, or spam. Stop throwing your toys out of the pram an get over yourself.
Yep, but not everyone on HN is familiar with C... this is a community where people should share knowledge. Don't assume that everyone else will just know something that you are familiar with, that would be arrogant. My blog is ad free, and doesn't return a revenue in anyway. If you don't want to learn anything, then don't click the link.
I would like to add that I purchased my mac solely for the purpose of finding out what development would be like on it. I am a C programmer, and I write code in Vim, so in terms of day to day activities, not a lot changes. Until I move into IDE based projects, where I almost always run crying back to my linux machine, and quite regularly the windows one too. I guess it really depends on the environment that you want to set up for writing your code in. Personally though, I would spend all that extra cash on a really nice machine (or even two...) With enough memory for decent virtualization. That way you can even have a Mac VM setup to see what it is like.
Why is everyone criticizing his website? He isn't here looking for a website review. He is here looking for a family to host him. Reading from Ireland here, if I lived in CA, it wouldn't be an issue.
This is very much how I look at the industry, its just that everyone I seem to talk to at the minute is only interested in rails!! C coders, by the dozens? Is there any chance you can put me in contact with a few people? It would be much appreciated. If you like, I can send you my email address, and we can even talk a while so you know I am not just some kid who wants a better deal.
Payment hasn't came into it for me yet, I am currently unaware of how much money I would be earning in a role in the USA, and it isn't my main focus anyway. Goldan Sachs have a massive recruitment drive on at the minute, but because of my location they wont help me move, they only offer recruitment to their London buildings. CME are the same, as they are moving a lot of their development to Northern Ireland. Unfortunately. Is there a job market that focuses on C, C++ and java roles, in the USA? I don't even need to focus directly on the finance industry, I would be happy to move to another sector.
Thanks, I will look there. I had been mainly looking on the Who's hiring posts of HN, but the few native development roles there are don't offer H1B visa support. I had seen a role or two on monster, but none of the employers there are willing to bring in a developer who needs a H1B. Thanks for your input though, it is very much appreciated.
Hey, sorry for the late reply, I commute a very long distance to and from work! forgive me.
I will be trying to focus on each of the points you mention.
I will start off with C and C++ in the blog. My experience actually goes into a range of other languages and I will eventually be covering them as well where possible.
I have serious love for algorithms, data structures, good practice (when its actually good and not just over engineering) Web development is something I might add, as an experimental section (or sister blog). The reason for this is that I am actually not a web applications developer and my experience mainly lies in low level software and API development. I hope this answers your question and if you have any topics you would like to see covered, let me know please.
Lucky you! I am an experienced developer who really wants to do the whole startup journey. I am confident in my development skills, but ideas are something that escape me!
I work for the New York Stock Exchange's technology wing at the moment. Our current thoughts on Field Programmable Gate Arrays are that they aren't worth switching to at (even though some people are seeing better latency results with them that with our current best solution). The reason for this is because our current solution is built to run on "standard" hardware. Although, in the world of finance, standard hardware can get very very complicated. FPGAs are fast being reigned in in terms of latency, and they aren't actually as robust in terms of deployment as people would like to think. For example, if you need a patch for software, often times you will need to reflash the machine. Are you latency sensitive? if so, how sensitive? is it imperative that you have the lowest latency possible?
I haven't managed to find a job yet, however that is probably due to the fact that I require a H1B visa for the USA. I have actually used the who's hiring threads to meet a lot of people though, I met some interesting entrepreneurs in 2012 via the thread.
I will worry about it later then. Can either of you suggest the best blog engine to use for this? I was thinking wordpress. Obviously my experience isn't in web development. :)
