AnaniasAnanas··on Word processors are ditching equation editors in favour of LaTeX
> statically compiling plaintext to image-like documents

I thought that it was common to compile LaTeX into postscript.

AnaniasAnanas··on Word processors are ditching equation editors in favour of LaTeX
Yet another reason to upload your (La)TeX source as well rather than only the pdf output.
AnaniasAnanas··on 8chan served with search warrant [pdf]
8chan supports for posts via tor. I do wonder how many of the posters there used it, making fbi unable to locate them.
AnaniasAnanas··on Google Researcher Publishes Windows 10 Zero-Day Security Vulnerability
Pretty sure that lockpicking instructions are legal. You can find a lot of lockpicking channels on youtube.

Would anyone loose anything if instead of something else you ended up pirating the movie that you wanted to watch?

AnaniasAnanas··on Lack of leadership in open source results in source-available licenses
So I will force them to waste money compared to if I used a more permissive license? Sounds good. Plus I could offer proprietary licenses this way.
AnaniasAnanas··on Lack of leadership in open source results in source-available licenses
That's cool and all but it does not seem any more copyleft than AGPL, in fact it seems even less copyleft than GPLv3 as it lacks the Tivoization/drm/etc clauses.
AnaniasAnanas··on Lack of leadership in open source results in source-available licenses
Something that GPLv3 would have prevented.
AnaniasAnanas··on Lack of leadership in open source results in source-available licenses
Would you mind elaborating on that? I am interested in a super-copyleft license for my next project and thought that AGPL was the "best" option out there. In what ways can it be bypassed?
AnaniasAnanas··on Large number of Twitter accounts critical of China suspended
This is exactly why we must support decentralized and censorship-resistant alternatives. Mastodon and Pleroma are steps in the right direction.

AnaniasAnanas··on Abuses show Assange case was never about law
My grandfather fled a certain regime decades ago in order to avoid prosecution. His horrible crime was being born in the wrong race. Sadly my great-grandfather did not have the same luck, and his whereabouts are still unknown to this day. Not fleeing did not really help in proving his innocence. Remember, being innocent is in eye of the beholder.

Anyway, he might be accused of sexual assault but he actually did nothing immoral. He just visited a legal site and had consensual sex with someone who claimed to be an adult at the time, and is in fact an adult now.

AnaniasAnanas··on Google relents slightly on blocking ad-blockers for enterprise Chrome users
To my knowledge ublock origin/umatrix do not spy on their users in this manner.
AnaniasAnanas··on Does open-source cryptographic software work correctly? [pdf]
Here is a project that uses F* (another language with dependent types) for proving cryptographic algorithms. https://project-everest.github.io/

As cool as Idris is, in my experience it has been quite buggy. I would suggest Agda or Coq instead which are more mature.

You can have e2e encryption and authentication in centralized systems, p2p is not really needed for it. See Signal for example.

> but it could be solved with a DHT

I think that tox is the solution to what you are asking for.

AnaniasAnanas··on Tor Browser 8.5
Qubes is a Xen-based virtualization thing, it has nothing to do with tor by itself, you can think of it as a replacement to qemu or virtualbox (but not exactly). Qubes has official support for both Whonix and Tails.

It looks like whonix is what you are looking for, from wikipedia:

> Unlike Tails, Whonix is not "amnesic"; both the Gateway and the Workstation retain their past state across reboots

AnaniasAnanas··on “The Big Bang Theory” Normalized Nerd Culture
> They have high-paying jobs

Maybe if you are lucky enough to be living in silicon valley. Not in most places though, especially if you live outside of America.

> ordinary successful lives

If you try to stretch the meaning of successful enough and exclude things such as romantic/sexual life.

> Nerds are not a vulnerable class and haven't been in a long time

Kids being bullied and remaining friendless in school due to being nerdy is not a rare occurrence.

AnaniasAnanas··on Tor Browser 8.5
If you are worried about the security provided by the tor browser then you should be using projects like whonix and tails. Both of them try to block (or redirect it via tor?) all non-tor traffic, which should make it significantly more difficult to mount an attack.

AnaniasAnanas··on Ask HN: Examples of bad open-source code to learn what to avoid?
Here you go https://github.com/progwml6/Natura/blob/1.7.10/src/main/java...

Tip: If you ever end up in a situation where you have to copy-paste code with minor changes then there is something that you are doing wrong. In this case using arrays and loops would be a much better solution.

AnaniasAnanas··on Birds are being vacuumed up as part of olive harvesting in the Mediterranean
> I do not want to live in a cave

You don't have to though. I am pretty sure that most of the European population until at least the 17th century did not have glass windows, and neither did the far-eastern cultures, which used paper instead - yet at the same time they did not live in caves.

> I want sunlight. I also want to be protected from cold, wind and rain.

If the windows are fully opaque just open them when you want sunlight - having sunlight while it is cold, windy, and raining is not that common after all.

AnaniasAnanas··on Birds are being vacuumed up as part of olive harvesting in the Mediterranean
We do have actually, there is no need for our windows to be made our of transparent materials.
