Alterlife··on Apple iPhone SE Available on Apple Store Again
Well shit.

I bought an iphone 7 this year and was planning on keeping it for a while. I did find some issues when searching the internet for iphone 7 problems, but my wife has an iphone 7 plus from when it came out and it's still working flawlessly.

Is there anywhere I can look before buying a few years old iphone series?

Alterlife··on Facebook’s algorithm change has spurred an angry, Fox News-dominated News Feed
I wish it could be made illegal to optimise for engagement.

“Engagement” their acceptable replacement word for what they really want to optimise for: Addiction.

Alterlife··on Reasons Not to Use Apple (2018)
> Many of the points he is specifically isolating for Apple are quite true of most of the big tech firms.

I am an apple fan myself, but this is not true. He isn’t “singling out” apple. Apple is the subject of this article.

Perhaps there should be other posts about other tech companies, perhaps there already are, it doesn’t matter.

The discussion is the ethical behaviour of companies, and This post is specifically about Apple.

Alterlife··on Gwern's Law: Ads cost you a tenth of your users
Youtube has a YT-Kids app which doesn't have ads.

It's handicapped in a lot of other ways. To name a few, you can't disable auto-play, if you want to disable recommendations the only way to do so is by selecting some channels that you would like your kid to have access to, and that will disable search AND casting. There's an un-skippable startup animation, and a whole lot of other animations that make the app feel slow. And the android tv version of it won't allow you to type in search queries with a keyboard (which the other youtube does allow).

In other words, it's better than the standard YT app in a lot of ways but it's an extremely frustrating UI for both the kids and adults.

From your reference:

> (If your question is more of a technical one: These signs weren't all individually hand-lettered. A professional lettering artist makes one copy, then the artwork is photographed and turned into a plate for silkscreening or lithography.)

Holy crap, was this so common they had it made produced like the baby on board signs? :(

Alterlife··on Ask HN: How to speak like a leader, not like an engineer?
Think about your Audience. That's all there is to it.

Your team's job is execution, Executives job is prioritisation. Your job as a first level manager is to make sure your teams work is prioritised correctly and that your people visible and valued.

When you're talking to your manager, think about what details he would be interested in and give him ONLY what he wants. In some cases it is about omitting details, and in other cases it's about processing the details into more digestible metrics.

As an example, if your team is spending time on a recurring issue and you want to get executive blessing for a project to develop an automation tool, you would open the dialog by hard-selling the problem. You are loosing a huge amount of productive time, atleast 'x' man-days every week. Your engineers are frustrated by this. Every team in your company is impacted by this, not just yours... and guess what, MY TEAM can solve this.

Alterlife··on Ask HN: How to speak like a leader, not like an engineer?
+1 on the table topics.

IMO it's the valuable part of Toastmasters. Toastmasters in general was too much of a cult-like environment for me, I wish there was a toast-masters 'lite' with just the table topics.

Alterlife··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Phone Numbers (2016)
+1 from India.

There's popular app in Bangalore that you can use to rent bicycles. I can't use it because my phone number (which has a relatively newly released starting digit series) doesn't pass their signup validation.

So frustrating.

It's frustrating indeed.

Alterlife··on Is “Senior Software Developer” a Meaningless Title?
From my experience, most promotions are a salary band change.

The company is willing to pay you more because:

1. They believe you will be able get a 'senior' band offer at a competing employer.

2. They believe that either you are worth the senior band pay or that you leaving will cost them more than the senior band pay.

Alterlife··on Is it creepy when brands pester you on social media?
These are funny.

It is a fine line between being charming and creepy. The person who made the tweets in the article isn't even trying.

Alterlife··on Mars One, which offered 1-way trips to Mars, declared bankrupt
I had the money and it was relatively safe, I would jump at the opportunity.

I got my son a telescope last year and we have been watching the moon whenever we get a chance. It is another world.

Alterlife··on Many popular iPhone apps are recording user sessions without asking
Another key paragraph is this one:

“This gives Air Canada employees — and anyone else capable of accessing the screenshot database — to see unencrypted credit card and password information,” he told TechCrunch.

The takeaway is that some companies are capturing things that they shouldn't be storing, and the article has exposed atleast one instance where this information has been sent to a third party without masking.

--

As a side note, I've always been afraid to use payment options within apps that redirect to bank logins or payment gateways and this only feeds my fears.

Even if you're making the payment through a trusted bank or a payment provider, these apps still probably intercept and store the information you gave your bank.

Alterlife··on Journalism generated by machine is on the rise
While I do agree with your argument to a point, it breaks down because the internet is a mountain of crap, and while attention is a limited resource, the crap is limitless.

You say you use AI to generate mundane articles. Well, your mundane AI article about baseball and 10,000 other AI generated articles are competing with quality content written by real people.

There are people who are passionate about baseball, who went went out to watch that baseball game and write about the passion behind every play and every ball. Possibly interviewing the crowd and the players.

Your AI is probably learning from those articles and getting better at faking that passion. So much so that in a few years maybe people won't be able to tell the difference.

Alterlife··on Journalism generated by machine is on the rise
Is AI the death of human creativity?

Assisted AI apparently now designs our cars and our planes, designs our logos, designs our buildings, generates our music.

More significantly, un-assisted AI curates what we are exposed to in the form of what's shown to us in our feeds and suggestions, and judging by the articles in OP, already is capable of writing articles for us. AI voices and news casters seem to be getting better by the day.

I can't tell where this is going anymore.

Alterlife··on Google launches an AI contest for social good
While I don't completely disagree with you,

If somebody known to kidnap dogs opened a free doggy daycare service, I would expect people to question his motives.

By doing this, I suspect Google will get access to a significant number of social datasets which were earlier not available to it.

Alterlife··on New Office Hours Aim for Well Rested, More Productive Workers
I've been an owl before kids and a lark after my kids were born.

In my experience, it has to do with routine and much nothing else. If I force myself sleep everyday at 10:00 PM and wake up at 5:30 sharp, I find in about a week that my sharpest time is the hours after I wake up and before my kids get out of bed.

When I have the luxury of choice, I stay awake and I find that I fall into focus post 11:00 PM when all is quiet and that deadline a couple of days ahead starts bugging me.

Alterlife··on Show HN: Founders launching startups on Twitch
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Startup_Financing_Cycle.p....

If you look at the above graph on startup financing cycle, it starts before there is any investment -- with cofounders and an idea.

The terminology and process beyond that point comes from MBAs and money men. A VC will probably invest in any company that will satisfy whatever objective they have for investing. This is a 24 hour project sprint by a founder. If it gets the right eyeballs, the idea is well on its way to becoming a startup.

The hashtag #24hourstartup is good branding that conveys that.

Alterlife··on Elementary OS – Fast, open, privacy-respecting replacement for Windows and macOS
This comment troubled me so I did some reading.

1. You can run Linux applications on elementary. There's nothing forcing anyone to use the store.

2. The split is actually higher than you said for cheaper app apps because the minimum cut for elementary is $0.50.

3. There is a review process which I assume involves human effort.

4. Significantly, there is no enrolment fee and no subscription cost. So you could consider this a referral / hosting fee for elementary.

This seems reasonable actually. Projects need money to run.

Alterlife··on Ask HN: How can we make the web more seamlessly translated/multilingual?
I work for a large MNC that builds 'enterprise software'. Needless to say I speak for myself below and not for the company I work for.

To my knowledge, large companies don't deliver unreviewed machine translated strings to customers because of the legal implications. In any machine translated interface, the customer has to take active steps to enable the machine translation. The customer is taking ownership of the page and it's content by doing so.

This is for several reasons: 1. Machine translated strings are sometimes literally correct but actually wrong or misleading in implication in the new language context. 2. For legal or technical terms the machine translation just isn't there yet. 3. For some phrases, the machine translation is just gibberish.

Another thing I noticed is that machine translated output atleast from google uses a very formal tone. People just don't write or talk like that.

It turns out that machine translation is not yet 'solid' as your post assumes. It often generates misleading results and sometimes it is outright incorrect.

Google et al will likely do what you're saying when they get translation working better.

Alterlife··on Migrating away from Google Maps and cutting costs
This is true for all google cloud services. You have to enter a credit card number. You may 'intend' to use just 20$ a month and I believe you can set quota alerts, but you can't set a hard budget. Google will just bill for whatever you consumed.

I think that's ridiculous. It should deal-breaker problem for anyone running on a side project.

Alterlife··on My somewhat complete salary history as a software engineer
Something significant happened between years 10 and 12. You managed to double your pay.

May I ask what it was?

Incidentally, I'm at exactly the same experience as you and I'll just say I make a lot less.

Alterlife··on ChuChu TV is responsible for widely-viewed toddler content on YouTube
I, the author of the comment, am Indian.

I see what this channel is doing with the algorithm and I don't like it. In addition, I don't like the content and don't want my kids trapped by it. I'm sure that there's some educational content in there, but over all is of poor quality.

There are other channels in the toddler entertainment business, I assume from other countries, which do the same thing. I avoid them as well.

There are good Indian channels on youtube. Chuchu TV is not one of them.

Alterlife··on ChuChu TV is responsible for widely-viewed toddler content on YouTube
Not OP, but from my experience my son until a certain age:

He would be very rough with my laptop, even pulling out keys and trying to throw it but be very careful with ipad. I'm not sure why.

Alterlife··on ChuChu TV is responsible for widely-viewed toddler content on YouTube
Chuchu tv is low effort content. I mean: it's really quite terrible and a waste of your kids time.

There's a lot of great content on youtube, but gets buried in this pile of garbage. Chuchu TV is part of the garbage. If you go to their channel and search for 'jonny jonny' (a popular nursery rhyme in india) you'll find a half dozen videos and enough garbage content to fill a whole days watching. This is a 3 minute rhyme.

The only reason chuchu has views is because they know how to game the system. Parents search for a popular nursery rhyme and leave kids with auto-play or suggestions... and guys like chuchu know how to game the recomendation algorithms to keep the kids within their content.

I don't think this is an SQL concept. The only people I've heard use this word (phrase?) are people who work with Java ORMs.
