Aloha··on Autoland saves King Air, everyone reported safe
In phonetics?q
Aloha··on Autoland saves King Air, everyone reported safe
I took issue with calling out the airport, multiple times in full phonetics, both at the beginning and the end of the transmission. All other callsigns, perfectly reasonable.
Aloha··on Autoland saves King Air, everyone reported safe
The only complaint is it uses phonetics for everything multiple times in each transmission, I'm a radio guy, I would use phonetics once, then otherwise spelled out letters - aka, "whiskey lima foxtrot" and WLF the next time I needed to say it.
Aloha··on The FOSS community acts like a cult and it's not helping the cause
I'm a product manager in my day job - and, I guess the gripe I have with FOSS stuff, is they're all too often designed as expert systems - which is great, super powerful, lots of control, but not suited to the workflows actual users just want to do out of the box.
Aloha··on Reverse Engineering US Airline's PNR System and Accessing All Reservations
not only that, word (and others) will convert a dash into an em-dash in text.
Aloha··on Hacker News front page now, but the titles are honest
you beat me to it - or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delay-line_memory in general, space is probably closer to an electrical delay line in practice.
Aloha··on Heart and Kidney Diseases and Type 2 Diabetes May Be One Ailment
I'm T2D - I've come to believe obesity is a side effect of diabetes, if I'm not on my medications, I can fast for 2-3 days before my blood sugar comes down, because my liver is constantly pumping out glucose into my system.

There is no doubt that hyper processed foods make this condition more likely, but its not just "you have weak willpower and got fat and sick" - I know a ton of fat people who do not have and will likely will never develop T2D.

Aloha··on In the Beginning was the Command Line (1999)
Various cars did (any of the vehicles with the gas tank mounted above the rear axle), some also had issues with side impact (GM square body trucks).

The 'crime' of the pinto was not that it was an unsafe car (it wasn't), it was that it could have been safer with a minimal (even by my standards, and I'm on the record as being opposed to mandatory backup cameras) increase in cost - that was why it grew the reputation, it was pure cost engineering (aka, cheapness - on the same level as the ignition switch failure issue GM had in the 2000's).

People died, a fair number of them - because Ford didn't want to spend an additional amount of money - less than 50USD in today's money - on a car that retailed for 15,000USD in todays money.

Aloha··on Nuclear energy key to decarbonising Europe, says EESC
Plus there was a significant contribution from England - VC10, deHavilland Comet, etc.

England also made what I consider to be the prettiest bomber ever made - the Handley-Page Victor

Aloha··on French supermarket's Christmas advert is worldwide hit (without AI) [video]
I thought the McD add was hilarious - I would have preferred it not be AI.
Aloha··on Ask HN: Should "I asked $AI, and it said" replies be forbidden in HN guidelines?
I also endorse this - maybe not outright ban but at least highly discourage.
Aloha··on Toyota unintended acceleration and the big bowl of "spaghetti" code (2013)
There is a large gap between "maybe trying to take lead out of solder causes more issues that it solves" and "lead paint is good"
Aloha··on Toyota unintended acceleration and the big bowl of "spaghetti" code (2013)
I'm a very large believer that aggressive RoHS regulations have created more intractable problems than they have solved.
Aloha··on Bag of words, have mercy on us
If you're writing an essay to prove you can or to speak your words - then you should do it yourself - but sometimes you just need an essay to summarize a complex topic as a deliverable.
Aloha··on Socialist ends by market means: A history
that may be so, but a stack of bills or small bag of coins is sure easier to cart around than things I can eat are.
Aloha··on The past was not that cute
Better food, living conditions and sanitation has helped greatly.
Aloha··on The past was not that cute
Agreed.
Aloha··on The past was not that cute
This is a bit meta, but looking at the comments on this thread - Nostalgia is a hell of a powerful drug, probably the most powerful one our brains can self generate (because of the complexity of feelings generated).

While I like some bits, some tech, some ascetics from yesteryear - I know one thing for certain - the world today is better for basically everyone than it has every been, by virtually every measurable standard, even the poorest of the poor are better off in 2025 than they ever have been at any point in history.

So while I might want to go visit the past if I had a time machine, I know I would never want to live there.

Aloha··on The past was not that cute
Your tone is a bit acerbic - but most of your facts are correct.

Part of what was driving feedsack dresses was the agricultural depression from 1918-1939/40

Aloha··on The past was not that cute
1850-1950 is much closer to a norm over human history -

3+ catastrophic major wars

3+ other minor ones.

2+ great depressions (each of which was as large as ever financial panic 1951-current combined)

3+ financial panic events

At least one pandemic - plus local epidemics were pretty common.

When I tell people "its never been better than it is today" they dont believe me, but its the honest to god truth.

Aloha··on The past was not that cute
The people that run that killing power are also citizens, and they either must be bought at an increasing steep price, or they will go with the bulk of the nation (mostly with their near and distant relatives who are suffering) - network effects are very real here.
Aloha··on The past was not that cute
They had a place that was familiar and comforting to go return to.

Anyone who is of a modern industrialized society who is waxing poetically about becoming a hunter gatherer is both, looking at history thru very rose colored goggles and welcome to go find a place to do just that.

Aloha··on The past was not that cute
Indeed!

Antibiotics and Insulin - those two things have saves untold lives.

Before about 1920, the difference between rich and poor and the likelihood to recover from disease had more to do with ability to rest and diet.

The rich and poor alike died to tuberculosis (which was often a death sentence until antibiotics), simple cysts, all sorts of very basic bacterial infections killed in droves.

At the risk of sidetracking this further - it was only after insulin where the idea that healthcare could be somewhat that could be a right became somewhat reasonable (before the late gilded age, doctors often did as much harm as good) - every lifesaving innovation we have made sense, were often very modest amounts of money is the difference between life and death make that argument stronger.

Aloha··on Autism's confusing cousins
Commonly called masking - learning the 'rules of the road' for peopling - the hardest thing that young folks with autism or ADHD need to learn is that you must learn how to do this, the world will not (often or always) change to accommodate you - but once you do it, you can appear more or less normal most of the time.

Debatable if the Coyote counts, I chose the conservative answer, even if I would otherwise agree with you

Aloha··on How Charles M Schulz created Charlie Brown and Snoopy (2024)
He died so very very young too. He was only 47 when he passed.

I wish Vince Guaraldi had lived longer, I really like his style of Jazz, its both the kind of thing you can leave on in the background, and its music that takes you places.

Cast your fate to the Wind and Alma-Ville are still some favorites.

I also consider his arrangement of the peanuts music into a cohesive whole to be pretty masterful - its out of print now, but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Charlie_Brown_Suite_%26_Ot...
