Alex_L_Wood··on The recurring dream of replacing developers
Well, who designs the system of flows?
Alex_L_Wood··on Replit founder Amjad Masad isn’t afraid of Silicon Valley
Well, he still is a terrorist symphatizer, just rich now.
Alex_L_Wood··on Google broke my heart
I am also betting on this. Google used their dumb bots in support since time immemorial, but now these dumb bots are supercharged by LLMs. Except they are still as dumb as before.

I still remember trying to get my Google Play account unbanned in 2014 after I clicked on my own ad in the app once to test that it’s working. Lovely times. Got the account back, but not due to my actions - their dumb bots masquerading as humans were giving me the runaround, and then I just randomly got my account back.

Alex_L_Wood··on Iron Beam: Israel's first operational anti drone laser system
Ignoring any constructive responses as "hasbara" is something that is actively harmful to any potential peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Alex_L_Wood··on Your job is to deliver code you have proven to work
It also doesn’t help that definition of who “staff engineer” is varies wildly by the company.
Alex_L_Wood··on Children with cancer scammed out of millions fundraised for their treatment
No lists? Have you ever actually lived in Germany and had to interact with its’ healthcare system?
Alex_L_Wood··on Everyone in Seattle hates AI
A knife then.
Alex_L_Wood··on Advent of Code 2025
Not sure if Kotlin is non-mainstream, but being able to use the vast Java libraries choice and a much nicer syntax are great boons.
Alex_L_Wood··on Show HN: PrinceJS – 19,200 req/s Bun framework in 2.8 kB (built by a 13yo)
This is pretty impressive, wow! I always wanted to build a toy HTTP requests framework just to better understand the tools I’m working with, and here you are building the full thing.
Alex_L_Wood··on Carice TC2 – A non-digital electric car
This reminds me of eGolf, and, I think, this is the right way to go for electric cars. They shouldn’t be apps on wheels, they should be cars, but with an electric motor.
Alex_L_Wood··on [dead]
Suuuure.
Alex_L_Wood··on Why the push for Agentic when models can barely follow a simple instruction?
And yours is also "you are using it wrong" in the spirit.

Are they doing the same thing? Are they trying to achieve the same goals, but fail because one is lacking some skill?

One person may be someone who needs a very basic thing like creating a script to batch-rename his files, another one may be trying to do a massive refactoring.

And while the former succeeds, the latter fails. Is it only because someone doesn't know how to use agentic AI, or because agentic AI is simply lacking?

Alex_L_Wood··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
Good. I remember the times when there was a weekly new framework that would absolutely revolutionize the web frontend development.

Mobile development forums were having all-out wars regarding MVP vs MVVM vs VIPER vs ... vs ... yadda yadda.

Now I can just enjoy stable predictable tooling and I can benefit from tons of examples and documentation.

Alex_L_Wood··on Replacing a cache service with a database
It's funny how I encountered a problem which went exactly the opposite way! We initially introduced a rate limiter that was adequate for the time, but with the product scaling up it stopped being adequate, and any failures with 429 were either ignored, or closed as client bugs. Only after some time we realized that the rate of requests scaled up approximately with the rate of product growth, and a quick fix was to simply remove the limiter, but after a couple of times when DB decided to take a nap after being overwhelmed, we added a caching layer.

Just goes to show that there is no silver bullet - context, experience and good amount of gut feeling is paramount.

Alex_L_Wood··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
My pet peeve is when streaming services only allow me to watch something in the language of the country I live in. I'm sorry, but why? Why would I want to watch a 1988 movie with horrible German dub?
Alex_L_Wood··on MCP: An (Accidentally) Universal Plugin System
The more I look into MCP, the less I understand the hype. It's an OK API that describes how to fetch list of tools and resources and retrieve them, somehow this is supposed to be the standard for AI and environment communication, and...that's it? Am I missing something vital there?
Alex_L_Wood··on AI slows down open source developers. Peter Naur can teach us why
We all as humans are hardwired to prefer greedy algorithms, basically.
Alex_L_Wood··on Figma files for proposed IPO
Maybe this will finally cause designers to ditch Figma. It's a fantastic tool for designers, but it's complete shit for developers.
Alex_L_Wood··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Ah, yes, Israel famously publicly declaring that its' holy mission is to destroy Iran. Happened so many times, yes.
Alex_L_Wood··on Meta claims torrenting pirated books isn't illegal without proof of seeding
What? No, you will not. You could get fined for seeding some popular stuff, but even then no one is knocking on your door, it'll probably come in the form of a letter, and even then it's not a guarantee.
Alex_L_Wood··on Set Up a $4/Mo Hetzner VM to Skip the Serverless Tax
Honestly, same. I'm building a small BE for a small startup with a friend of mine, and while sometimes I have these urges that I should migrate everything to K8S / Docker Swarm, so far the setup with three small VMs of API server machine + ingress machine + auth machine with simple SSH deploy through GitHub Actions (that can always be performed manually, if needed) works fine. Is it fancy? No. Can I understand everything to the last details what happens during deploy and debug it? Oh yes.

Focusing on fancy infra now will just take a lot of time for little to no benefit.
