AlexCoventry··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
At least they can resist it, as we saw with Anthropic.
AlexCoventry··on Inkling: Our Open-Weights Model
Open Source won out because the cost of compute fell through the floor. I'm not sure whether we're going to see a similar dynamic play out this time, although I would greatly prefer it to.
AlexCoventry··on GPT-5.6
How are you going to confidently tell the difference between it being slightly dumber, vs just having bad luck with your recent attempts?
AlexCoventry··on GPT-5.6
How does that work? Doesn't that mean Microsoft/Amazon/Google have full de facto access to OAI's and Anthropic's model weights and operational processes?

This is one reason it surprised me that Anthropic decided to run stuff on Musk's hardware. It seems overwhelmingly likely that the new Grok release is informed by what Musk has been able to learn from that relationship.

AlexCoventry··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
There's likely a major world war brewing. Should I not be thinking and forming opinions about that? It's probably going to profoundly affect me.
AlexCoventry··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
How do you reliably prevent a clever psychopath who's set their mind to it from gaining power?

> Change is not going to happen until it's forced.

Yes, Pearl Harbor was a known vulnerability, prior to the Japanese attack. The US just wasn't ready to take airpower seriously, at that point.

AlexCoventry··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
According to Zelensky, there will be drones capable of traversing tens of thousands of kilometers within a couple of years. The US mainland is definitely at risk of drone attack in the near-medium term, IMO.

> One, two, three years — drones will strike ten, twenty thousand kilometers. With reactive engines, they will be very cheap -- Zelensky

AlexCoventry··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
According to The Economist, the Iranian theocracy is no longer in power, the IRGC is. Still, not the regime change Trump was hoping for, that's for sure.

> Khamenei’s killing has accelerated Iran’s transition from a theocracy to an ambitious nationalistic state dominated by military men. The irgc appears to wield power with few constraints. Clerics who challenged its influence—including former Presidents Mohammad Khatami and Hassan Rouhani—were conspicuously absent from the [funeral] processions.

AlexCoventry··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
The goals for intervention in the Serbia/Bosnia conflict were clear and noble, IMO.

> Why don’t we have reasonable logistics and supply lines and infrastructure with $1T?

Deeply entrenched corruption, obviously.

AlexCoventry··on The Fall and Rise of Screwworm
Surprisingly, it is a thing.

AlexCoventry··on Post-Mythos Cybersecurity: Keep calm and carry on
Where can I read about the Anthropic incident?
AlexCoventry··on Post-Mythos Cybersecurity: Keep calm and carry on
> things like ethnic cleansing (which these models are already being used for).

Got a cite?

AlexCoventry··on Post-Mythos Cybersecurity: Keep calm and carry on
At this point, it has a lot to re-learn, as the Trump administration has been systematically lobotomizing it for 18 months.
AlexCoventry··on Previewing GPT‑5.6 Sol: a next-generation model
> How in the world did Anthropic have to do all the theatrics about Mythos just to have OpenAI release an equivalent or stronger model a month later without any drama???

Corruption. Giving Trump $25M will earn you a favorable decision.

AlexCoventry··on IBM debuts sub-1 nanometer chip technology
It's just a shame that none of it seems to pan out, and in the areas where I know what they're talking about, it all sounds like cynical nonsense to me.
AlexCoventry··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
The "free market" gave the PRC its current strategic lock on rare-earth minerals. There's definitely no such thing as a free market in a Maoist dictatorship. I personally think the "free market" concept is an unachievable ideal and thought-terminating cliche, but "free market in a Maoist dictatorship" is for sure a contradiction in terms.
AlexCoventry··on Zen and the Art of Machine Learning Research
I just finished Everyday Zen by Charlotte "Joko" Beck, and it's very pragmatic and good, IMO, though you won't learn a lot of doctrine from it.

Zen is not a good Buddhist tradition to start with unless you have a skilled personal teacher, IMO. I would recommend starting with something like dhammatalks.org instead. (Click on the "For Beginners" header near the bottom of the page.)

AlexCoventry··on U.S. science is in chaos
Canada, Europe, China.
AlexCoventry··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
Ascension to AI plays a quasi-religious, soteriological role in the world of the book.
AlexCoventry··on AI coding at home without going broke
Right now, we seem to be shambling toward a war which would hit globalized industrial processes very hard. Buying decent hardware now might wind up looking like good insurance against that.
AlexCoventry··on No, everyone is not using AI for everything
They might not have an answer in mind. They might just be exploring how you adapt to new tools and methods.
AlexCoventry··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
I have a nonlinear attention mechanism which seems to improve data efficiency, but it's slow. I'm trying to learn the python CuTe DSL to speed it up.

I'm also reading Principles and Practice of Deep Representation Learning, Or: A Mathematical Theory of Memory.

AlexCoventry··on Policy on the AI Exponential
> Often this is for good reasons: governments have grave powers, and it’s usually for the best that they aren’t used too hastily.

"Don't mention the (Iran) War!"

AlexCoventry··on Google will pay SpaceX $920M per month for compute
Maybe they'll become an AI company again after they've abused their privileged access as hardware providers to reverse-engineer Google and Anthropic's weights and operations.
AlexCoventry··on Google to pay SpaceX $920M a month for compute capacity at xAI data centers
Common sense and rationality go out the window in corrupt, unregulated environments with perverse incentives.
AlexCoventry··on Failing grades soar with AI usage, dwindling math skills in Berkeley CS classes
> nearly 30 students in CS 10 were caught cheating on take-home exams in spring 2026.

You'd have to be really lazy and disrespectful, to get caught cheating on a take-home exam...

AlexCoventry··on Expanding Project Glasswing
I thought one of the advantages of Glasswing was that it could produce a PoC for you. Was it producing working PoC's?
