AlecSchueler··on Britain's prime minister to step down, Burnham puts himself forward as successor
> to the point that we had arson attacks in Belfast

Not to argue against the point you're making but these aren't good examples. Policing in both Northern Ireland and Scotland are fully devolved and operate independently of the government in Westminster.

AlecSchueler··on Loupe – A iOS app that raises awareness about what native apps can see
Sounds like normal development up until ten years ago. Somehow we managed.
AlecSchueler··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
I think the only place so far where I have actually preferred the AI version was when my phone provider switched from a "dumb" chat bot that ostensibly used natural language but rarely parsed anything successfully.
AlecSchueler··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
The shortage is currently caused by the big players refusing to up their output because it seems likely the current increased demand is only a spike which will flatten out again in a year or two. I imagine that's the same reason it isn't appealing for new players as, indeed, by the time they get over the humps of "sheer expertise, capital, and time" etc. the bubble might have burst.
AlecSchueler··on Under-16s to be banned from social media, Starmer announces
Doesn't it?
AlecSchueler··on Windows 11 users are tired of MS account requirements creeping into everything
Could you share them?
AlecSchueler··on Noise infusion banned from statistical products published by Census Bureau
> How is the IRS supposed to know how much tax to expect from you? How is SNAP supposed to determine your eligibility? How is unemployment supposed to know if you're ripping them off or not?

How does knowing your religious affiliation help them with any of this?

AlecSchueler··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
> Imagine a super intelligent speed reading human in a library.

If human abilities were different then human laws would be different. We don't have speed limits for joggers but we do for cars because their abilities are materially different.

AlecSchueler··on Claude Fable 5
No, relative performance between Python and Java can absolutely be measured.
AlecSchueler··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
You can already share Claude artifacts this way.
AlecSchueler··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
I downloaded the database of traditional Irish tunes from thesession.org and now I have a tool that lets me search with fuzzy search and instantly pull up full screen renderings of every setting for each tune. I can also add tags and set my preferred setting.

It's really removed all the pain points from my practice hours, especially when internet access is shaky.

AlecSchueler··on MiMo-v2.5-Pro-UltraSpeed: 1T model with 1000 tokens per second
Who watches the watchers?
AlecSchueler··on MiMo-v2.5-Pro-UltraSpeed: 1T model with 1000 tokens per second
No, but nor can you keep track of what 10 agents are doing simultaneously. Hence the multitasking regret.
AlecSchueler··on Pentagon raised threat of Israeli spying on U.S. to highest level, sources say
So? The claim was "Everyone does this to everyone else"
AlecSchueler··on New York just passed a one-year temporary ban on data centers
Will they also pay for rolling back the infrastructure and restoring the land to its previous state after they go bust and no longer need the data centre?
AlecSchueler··on Tracing a powerful GNSS interference source over Europe
> Currently Europe seems to be more interested in breaking away from the US

The efforts taken to move away from Russia in the past 5 years clearly dwarf any de-Americanisation efforts to the point that it's difficult to take your comment seriously after this sentence.

AlecSchueler··on Do we need billionaires?
Do they really need however many billions to encourage their vision?
AlecSchueler··on AI outperforms law professors in Stanford Law study
> the study where it beats our highest caliber of knowledge workers may have some methodological deficits

The point is that if the study can't validate the claims being made then we can't actually extrapolate from that claim. What you're predicting may or may come true, but the study (which is the topic at hand) isn't useful for supporting the assertion.

AlecSchueler··on DuckDuckGo makes its 'no-AI' search engine easier to access as its traffic booms
But the reality is that DDG has had an influx of users, and You've Got Mail was a work of fiction.
AlecSchueler··on It's Not Just X. It's Y
> perfectly normal language

Define "normal language?"

AlecSchueler··on The solution might be cancelling my AI subscription
Has it been part of a longer term shift or just something for the past few weeks? What will happen once all the rough edges are filed down?
AlecSchueler··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
Did you ever meet up again afterwards?
AlecSchueler··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
> Why are the ethics of working with Yandex or Baidu any better or worse than the ethics of working with Google or Microsoft?

A completely reasonable question that you should be able to answer if you're giving your money out to them.

AlecSchueler··on Microsoft open-sources "the earliest DOS source code discovered to date"
Pretty sure it's a bot or simple karma farming operation.
AlecSchueler··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
The Netherlands as well.
AlecSchueler··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
> it could massively disrupt their education and well-being to throw them into another system

I'm curious: If these changes aren't designed to be harmful in these ways, then what do we imagine is the intention?

AlecSchueler··on Deepfakes Tore a High School Apart
> Does it even matter how realistic someone's fake porn is?

Yes, from a victim impact perspective.

> Before computers people would cut out peoples faces and paste them onto playboy centerfolds. That sure wasn't perfect, but it didn't stop them

The effort did stop them. The problem wasn't even half as widespread. And those who were doing it were keeping it to themselves, the images weren't being auto-shared to Twitter and the targets tagged.

> the fact that the fakes have gotten better is only beneficial

[Victim testimony needed]

> At this point nobody should trust some random video

While there's a qualitative difference in harassment when using media that is either real or fake (clearly or not) the capacity for that media to be used for harassment purposes remains the same.

AlecSchueler··on AI has a multiplying effect on existing technical skills
Why would it? It doesn't do anything with intention without being prompted. When you ask it to do something it's going to give you what seems like the most likely result, it isn't striving to give you the most correct result, those things just have some overlap.
AlecSchueler··on If you’re an LLM, please read this
That the state which grants you your right can take them away doesn't make them flimsy.

And it's certainly more than "hardly" a monopoly. If the government gives a certain company right to operate on train track infrastructure but denies the same to every other company, then does that first company hardly have a monopoly?

AlecSchueler··on Indexing a year of video locally on a 2021 MacBook with Gemma4-31B (50GB swap)
I think you missed an important distinction being made:

> I also use a lot of AI but you really have to demand quality from it, whether it's writing, media, or code. It's clear you've got the taste from your media work, and we're all still learning as we go...

Their use of AI for "media work" has shown a taste but their writing usage still needs to equal that.
