Everyone has a right to keep their digital content private and secure. Virtru was founded with the belief that exercising that right should be easy and convenient. Virtru allows you to send end-to-end encrypted email using your existing email address and existing email provider with the flip of a switch.

We have browser extensions for Chrome/Firefox, apps for iPhone and Android, and a plugin for Outlook desktop.

Our full time team of ~30 is currently 50% engineers and with ~50% of the team working remotely across the US. We value automated testing, readable/maintainable code, documentation, and code reviews. We run in 2 week sprints and dedicate about 20% of total capacity to things the dev team thinks are important (technical debt, refactoring, exploring a new technology, etc), while the rest goes to feature development and addressing bugs.

== Current positions ==

1) Full stack NodeJS/Javascript developer (full details https://gist.github.com/Akkuma/50e6959f36d422a559ae)

== Get in touch ==

If you care about privacy and are interested in creating security products at a company which thinks that user experience is a first class citizen, please get in touch! Send a secure email (using Virtru!) to jobs@virtru.com with subject “HN who is hiring response” and tell us what interests you about Virtru. It would be great if you can provide some sample code that we can check out (github, bitbucket, etc).

Akkuma··on Why I don’t use CSS preprocessors
I'm hard pressed to believe the quality of the CSS across 15 subcontractors was actually good and consistent. You can't get 5 developers in a room without finding at least a few differences in opinion how something could or should be done and when it comes to CSS you have even more flexibility to how you're writing it and the associated markup.

What was done to ensure similarity of HTML/CSS across such a large project?

Akkuma··on ES7 async functions – a step in the wrong direction (2015)
Using a library like Bluebird couldn't you simply write and get the exact behavior intended?

    async function renderChapters(urls) {
        Promise.map(urls, getJSON).each(j => j.html));
    }
or

    async function renderChapters(urls) {
        var chapters = await Promise.map(urls, getJSON);
        chapters.forEach(j => j.html);
    }
Akkuma··on On Let's Plays – That Dragon, Cancer
Interest doesn't equate to profit if they have no other avenue to experience the "game". There are so many ways to entertain oneself that people could simply move onto something else readily available without paying for That Dragon, Cancer.
Akkuma··on JavaScript libraries should be written in TypeScript
Flow is being ported to work on windows and there are now builds out there for it https://github.com/OCamlPro/flow & the binary downloads http://www.ocamlpro.com/pub/ocpwin/flow-builds/
Akkuma··on JavaScript libraries should be written in TypeScript
As you mentioned, Flow not being a build step seems to be a big win to me. A lot of different tools use or encourage you to use babel and babel is ahead of TypeScript in ES6/ES7, http://kangax.github.io/compat-table/es6/. If you use TypeScript your chain suddenly becomes much slower/more complex.
Akkuma··on Screencasting with free software
I believe this often has more so to do with the hardware/os. You can also alter delay of audio/video in OBS studio to sync things up better. I regularly stream and the only lag I have is due to a weird setup I have.
Akkuma··on Screencasting with free software
VLC is not optimized to prioritize video quality at all last time I saw or used it. Additionally, it felt clunky and seemed to perform worse than MPC-HC.
Akkuma··on Screencasting with free software
I'd recommend using http://www.cccp-project.net/ or http://haruhichan.com/forum/showthread.php?7545-KCP-Kawaii-C... and never using WMP ever again for viewing videos.
Akkuma··on Screencasting with free software
This is probably a configuration issue, although OBS has more issues OS X for a variety of reasons. I've ran OBS on my 10 year old PC while coding without much issue.
Akkuma··on REM vs. EM – The Great Debate
The approach that I've used is components style themselves, components that contain other components know how to alter the child components, page layouts/templates can alter components, and each individual page can modify from there. I still consider that modular. The only way a component is impacted is when a parent component explicitly alters it.

In your example the articles would have a standard styling and the main/sidebar would alter the styling as needed.

Akkuma··on Screencasting with free software
You could use OBS, Open Broadcaster Software, which is open source that has features geared toward streaming, but could ultimately prove more valuable than "simple" screencasting software. For instance, want to show your code always even when you're googling answers? That is very easy in OBS.
Akkuma··on The Sad State of the Backbone Ecosystem
According to Inferno's benchmarks section[1] that lists Mithril, Mithril is actually slower than React when it comes to DBMonster and is slower than all others listed. As an aside, domvm seems to be exceptional in its performance and size. Yes, others are faster, but the library is much smaller. The flexibility of it is also pretty awesome and holds a place in my heart after making my own mini framework years ago.

Akkuma··on Rebass: Configurable React Stateless Functional UI Components
You generally have three choices when it comes to state. You can either use something like an event bus, raise events for others to change their state, move the state to the top and manage all those changes at once, or have something that manages the state of children.

An example would be if you have accordions setup that causes any open accordions to close when a different one is open. If you go with an event bus, each component would setup listeners for something like 'accordion:opened' set their state to close if the opened accordion wasn't theirs. If you move state to the top you'd set all other accordions to closed based off the event and rerender. The last would be an accordion group component that manages all the state for the children, which ultimately is a more localized version of moving state all the way to the top.

Stateless functions just take input and give output without storing anything. This would be accordions with a group that manages the state of the children or by fully moving it all the way to the top, so external functions handle the state. When you use the event bus approach you localize all state within the component and it is no longer a simple given A, you get B.

Akkuma··on AMD wants to standardize the external GPU
Maybe I'm crazy, but AMD doesn't have to do anything. The external enclosure, which would be made by a third party, unless AMD wants to make first party ones, would implement the Thunderbolt port, PSU, provide a PCI-E slot, and the GPU would be off to the races.
Akkuma··on Denmark confirms US sent rendition flight for Snowden
I think the reason stems from fear of death. Very few people actively fear the NSA & government using this information to inflict harm on them to result in their or their loved ones demise. On the other hand, they see the news plastered with murders done with guns and now have some degree of fear.
Akkuma··on Why React/Redux is inferior as a paradigm
WebPack 2.0 does support ES6 module import statements. In fact, it does tree shaking now too, but only if you use import {x} from foo.
Akkuma··on Dear “Dear GitHub”
If Issues hasn't been touched for over a year and a half, what exactly are the priorities at GitHub? Has GitHub reached a point where they no longer care about free users as they've served their purpose of creating a network effect that is now driving in enterprise customers?
Akkuma··on You can't trust Amazon Underground
I think you're thinking of KingUser aka Kingo now and not SuperSU.
Akkuma··on What Valve got right and wrong with the Steam Machine
I for one am a PC only gamer. I had an Xbox 360 for free that I barely used and prior to that there weren't enough exclusives I was interested in to make me want a console.
Akkuma··on Object.observe withdrawn from TC39
Was your data mutable or immutable? The former requires you to write shouldComponentUpdate logic that isn't just old == new. If you didn't write any of that logic and didn't use immutable data rendering everything again from the top down due to a single change is of course going to be terrible performance.

If you wanted to be more adventurous you should look at alternative virtual dom implementations http://vdom-benchmark.github.io/vdom-benchmark/. What you'll find is that React is actually the slowest one out there based on performance. For instance, on dbmonster InfernoJS sees 50-100% more fps and on my machine ~20x better benchmark performance. If you want the next popular implementations look at virtual-dom, which is leveraged in a variety of frameworks like https://github.com/ashaffer/vdux, or Google's Incremental DOM, https://github.com/google/incremental-dom.

Akkuma··on Microsoft Band 2.0 Review
This is the problem for me. Why would I want to abandon Android when I have never had the ability to use their product as a daily driver? There is a massive difference between playing with a phone for 5-10 minutes and using it daily for weeks. I think the 950 looks amazing, but not enough so to ditch everything I enjoy about Android and fork over a massive amount of money.
Akkuma··on Google to Fold Chrome Operating System into Android

Akkuma··on Square files for IPO
Personally, I think you either should disregard equity altogether or accrue as much as possible if it'll be of a reasonable size.
Akkuma··on Soda Taxes Seem to Cut Soda Drinking
Why stop there? We might want to monitor people each day via fitbit like devices that report back the data to ensure everyone is exercising the recommended amount. We can then tax or reduce taxes for the applicable individuals.

This could obviously be deemed a bit of a slippery slope fallacy, but I'd argue the above is probably more beneficial than taxing my soda if you truly want to reduce healthcare costs by having healthier individuals. But, who wants to go that far?

Akkuma··on The Gracie jiu-jitsu story
I hope for your friend's sake that they just misinterpreted the origin.

Aikido has a Paul Bunyan creator that I would say is analogous to Yoda. He was from the stories I heard, from a direct student of his Roy Suenaka of Wadokai Aikido, pretty much a modern Miyamoto Musashi and I'm sure no one will ever get completely true stories today. He started his life as a farmer, served in the Japanese Army during WW2, and had a spiritual awakening eventually leading to the creation of Aikido. He's an interesting person due to when he lived and the life he lived.

Aikido has soft (spiritual) and hard (martial) techniques. A lot of sensei's only subscribe to one or the other and there are two major societies, Ki and Aikikai. When I practiced, we subscribed to both, so we even made use of things like choke holds and punches to initiate.

Akkuma··on GitHub Desktop is now available
Check SmartGit out. I've used it for years and love it.
Akkuma··on Monkey the Cat Hunts for Dinner
I think this has already been accomplished by http://getshru.com/
Akkuma··on Steam hit by major security breach
My own interaction with two developers there several years ago was that the web was clearly the redheaded stepchild of Valve. I think they said something like maybe 7 people worked on those features back then, one of those two only sort of worked on it. Additionally, they only really had something like 3-4 people focusing on it most of the time.

For years they had prototype.js included, yet the library was essentially dead at that point for at least a year. Now they have jQuery and are running 1.8.X version, which means they are using a 2.5 year old version. I think this kind of speaks for itself.
