I send random stuff about user interfaces here

Akcium··on Show HN: Ease your dev life with these general naming rules
I was always struggling with one thing: the naming conventions of attributes may differ depending on if it's backend or frontend.

For example,

1. In MySQL it's common to name columns like user_name

2. In PHP you can use anything, but if you use camelCase, then it might turn out:

$userName = $user->user_name (using ORM for example)

3. In Javascript if I choose to have camelCase, which is common too, it might turn out:

fullName = user.first_name + ' ' + user.last_name

So the mix of conventions is unavoidable which is irritating.

How to deal with that?

Akcium··on Ask HN: How do you plan what you're going to do on weekend?
I sacrificed all my hobbies =(
Akcium··on Why Your To-Do List Never Ends
Because till you're alive, you have things to do. Your to-do list will end when you die :)
Akcium··on Steve Jobs Secrets of Life
What a coincidence, but I've recently (~2 days ago) watched this video.

Why I really value such interviews because they don't look like commercial stuff, like he's not advertising anything and looks truly sincere.

And it's priceless when you can hear how such a person truly thinks

Akcium··on Thanks HN: You helped save a company that now helps thousands make a living
This is indeed incredible.

When I read such posts I have so many different feelings mixed up.

1. I'm envious, I won't hide this :)

2. I think that I shouldn't give up with my own product

3. I think that I don't work hard enough

4. I feel pleasure, I'm glad that it was success for you. Yep, I don't only envy but also can be happy for someone

5. Your name is Vlad, are you by the way from Russia? If so, Поздравляю от всей души! =)

These posts should be in golden collection.

Especially if someone says: "Hey, who needs another tool like this?" and you show him posts from dropbox, webflow and others

Akcium··on Ask HN: What are the minimum metrics to monitor when launching a SaaS product?
I have the same question. I've already launched my product and I haven't monitored anything so far.

Except, looking for traffic. Well, basically all I do is watching users number, subscriptions and traffic. Users/subscriptions - in database, traffic - in https://usefathom.com/

But I'm a small SaaS.

I'm not sure, I know that there are tons of metrics, funnels etc, but if the number of users/traffic small, should we that much care about indexes?

Akcium··on Ask HN: Is there any "specialized" HN for Mathematicians?
Not a mathematician but maybe https://math.stackexchange.com/ ?
Akcium··on Ask HN: How do we know Signal or Telegram don't store our data on their servers?
At first I wanted to write about client-side app verification, that we can prove that the apps we have and the open-source complied app would be the same.

Which does not prove that if the app sends your phone number or location (for example), they don't save it in database.

Indeed, interesting question

Akcium··on Ask HN: Are there experienced (co) Founders looking for new ventures to start?
A bit offtopic but: I have been always scared to work with co-founders even if I know them, but looking for random people for the web looks way too scary.

Not because someone will do some nasty things, but because there is a high probability that there will be disputes about how to do things, which will lead to break up?

When I was looking for a coach in gym, at first I attended the gym for a year and I was silently looking at coaches there, how they behave, how they talk, and only after that I decided to hire the one who suits me most :)

Anyway, wish you luck!

Akcium··on Ask HN: Best way to write Native apps for Mac, Windows and Linux?
Why Elector is bad btw? I haven't used it, but just curios, since I want to.

For small apps it seems okay?

I'm in the same boat as you, I'm a javascript developer but I want to also promote my app to desktop.

Akcium··on Show HN: Native, infinitely nest-able notes with multi-dimensional tagging
I truly believe that there is a lack of good notes app for Mac. Or maybe for other systems as well...

1. Mac native app - just don't like it.

2. Bear - good, but I don't want the markdown highlighting, I don't want to use markdown

3. ...? anything else?

Regarding your app: haven't checked it but the landing should be fixed for desktop, it's not centered, it's made for mobile but there are desktop users too! :)

Akcium··on Ask HN: Does support and success should be one team?
I've never even heard about success team :)
Akcium··on Ask HN: What is the right way to test your product idea while having a day job?
At first I didn't even think about differentiation. Well, the only thing is that I'm in love with good UI/UX, so I'm trying to make it pleasant to use.

So, few points which made me decide to work on the side project:

1. I saw few successful examples of exactly the same products, whose founders are solo founders just like me. I knew exactly that they were successful

2. I saw few examples of bad UI/UX, so I decided that I could do better (if it was that simple, sigh...)

3. I instantly got the idea what these services are all about, so I liked it

But I'm not successful, yet.

Akcium··on Ask HN: What is the right way to test your product idea while having a day job?
I haven't told my employer anything. Well, if you work in your free time, you don't have to say anything :)

Yes, I have, and right now I have few customers while still working on full time job.

Btw, if you're afraid about supporting users, it will take much time only if you get quite a lot of them (depends on the project though)

Akcium··on Ask HN: What is the right way to test your product idea while having a day job?
Also it very much depends on the full-time job itself. I mean, some people work strict hours, like they cannot afford work less.

My conditions are quite mild, meaning that the most important is the result, not hours.

The only problem I have ALL the time is finding right place to work. I don't work on my side project while sitting in office, of course.

Cafes might be noisy, expensive etc :)

Akcium··on Ask HN: What is the right way to test your product idea while having a day job?
I work on my side project https://pingr.io while having full time job.

Well, I'm not sure about validating idea. I just used the idea that was already validated by others.

My daily schedule was like:

Variant A:

- 8 AM to 11 AM work in a cafe on my side project

- 12PM - 8PM work at full-time job at office

----------

Variant B:

- 10AM - 6PM work on fulltime job at office

- 7PM - 11PM work on side project in a cafe, then go home

So actually I was able to get 3-4 hours for side project either in the mornings or in the evenings.

Plus, of course, the weekends were dedicated to the side project too.

Regarding validation, as I said, I didn't validate my idea, because the idea was already validated by others.

Pros: you know people need this Cons: a lot of competitors

Akcium··on How I was failing to find time for life while working remotely
Yeah, I'm looking into the concept too, as well as other therapy stuff. There is a therapy method called ACT, which has similar concepts I think
Akcium··on How I was failing to find time for life while working remotely
Thank you

By queue you mean a set of tasks? Or a big goals or what?

I have a to-do list, a backlog in my project. The number of tasks just grow up, all I got power to do is to endlessly fill this list.

So we're talking about "small set of tasks", or a queue per project, or... could you clarify here?

And yeah, walking alone might help. Indeed. Will do

Akcium··on How I was failing to find time for life while working remotely
Currently I'm in a big problem with time because of the mix of psychological problems including perfectionism.

What I mean is: I spent almost all my time thinking how to plan my life. When I think about what I should do every day, I always find excuses why it won't work.

So it turns out that everyday is spent by thinking instead of doing.

Also I understand what the author meant when talking about the difficulty of maintaining work-life balance. But this happened for me all the time, not only when there was a lockdown, but really all the time.

I'm not working on hourly basis, but I'm working on my side-product. And the thoughts in my head are "Okay, we can spend a few evenings coding and we'll have that feature. Probably it'd be enough to breakthrough and we will become millionaires!" :D I'm exaggerating but still.

Then, after I spent all the time thinkings, I accuse myself that I haven't been working.

This is a vicious circle.

And after that, the "trigger" in the behaviour formula is something I'm waiting for all my life: the secret sign to start planning.

Akcium··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
Oh thank your for your feedback

Regarding pricing, this is what I'm struggling with. The reason for fixed pricing is to cover commission + if I got a lot of users with like "$0.01/mo" usage, then it'd be hard to support all of them, it's literally free option.

I thought about prepaid, I don't remember exactly why I declined that option. I think I liked the digital ocean model, though they don't have fixed dollar.

Hmm

Akcium··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
https://pingr.io - uptime (soon performance) monitoring service

I'm looking for help regarding: - New features which you miss in such services - Pricing model (https://www.producthunt.com/discussions/how-to-choose-correc...)

It's already working, though might be buggy a little.

Thinking of switching to B2B, instead of B2C

Akcium··on Ask HN: What do you miss in uptime monitoring services?
Oh I see. I know one of my competitors check full trust chain.

I've put that in backlog, thank you

Akcium··on Ask HN: Where do you regularly discover interesting links on internet?
On hacker news!
Akcium··on Ask HN: How many hours per day do you work?
After reading few comments I just want to say that you guys are the best community ever.

This is really so interesting to learn from others experience!

Akcium··on Google, you are bad at UX
Indeed.

Even the list of emails and their preview (master-detail layout) took long time to implement and it was in "Laboratory" settings or something like that

Akcium··on Google, you are bad at UX
In this case it should definitely be the one team.

And yes, these pagination buttons made me to make that tweet, I swear

Akcium··on Google, you are bad at UX
I agree that users learn how to use products, then get used to it.

But, for example, in case of pagination I couldn't get used to it.

Plus, the learning curve shouldn't be that steep

Akcium··on Having 170 competitors in not an obstacle
Interestingly I changed my pricing quite a lot, because many people were complaining that competitors are cheaper and it's kind of hard to hide this fact.

But still I got some ideas which I'm going to implement, and hopefully increase my value.

For me, $20k/month is surreal. But for someone it's nothing.

Akcium··on Having 170 competitors in not an obstacle
Will do, thanks for sharing!
Akcium··on Having 170 competitors in not an obstacle
I guess we should not clone a product, but its okay to clone the idea.

I used vk.com a lot in the past and in terms of UI it was much more convenient for me than Facebook.

Same ideas, different implementations.
