AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: How do I make the move to consultant?
How do you get gigs without a contract? That no doubt violates all sort of insurance, security and finance rules for most companies.

AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: For those on call, how often are you called?
This is not normal. Our on-call schedules run 5-9 Monday to Friday, and 5pm Friday to 9am Monday. If I were paged twice in a week that would be a bad week, being paged at all is fairly uncommon now. Historically it would be more common, but no where near daily, that would be entirely unacceptable.

We've invested a load of time reducing the frequency of paging incidents over the years, the entire technology organisation recognises the importance of fixing said incidents and how disruptive it is to peoples lives/sleep/etc.

AdamGibbins··on Take a Look at the Crossrail Station Under Bond Street
Sure, but arguably thats penalising the wrong party. Also depends on who purchases, if you're a first time buyer you get significantly reduced stamp duty for example.
AdamGibbins··on Take a Look at the Crossrail Station Under Bond Street
You pay stamp duty land tax (SDLT) on the purchase of land or property, not sale.
AdamGibbins··on Neovim v0.4.0
I've been using neovim for years now, I've never once had a crash.
AdamGibbins··on 94k Bitcoin (1B USD) transferred from unknown wallet to unknown wallet
You're correct, sorry. AIUI there's a higher limit for corps/govs too. Banks often have lower limits than these but I've no doubt they'll lift them if there's need.

For those not familiar, FPS offers 2h (normally instant) transaction speed.

AdamGibbins··on Wunderlist founder wants to buy his app back from Microsoft
Remember The Milk, similar advanced search and filtering syntax as Todoist, but has start dates.
AdamGibbins··on 94k Bitcoin (1B USD) transferred from unknown wallet to unknown wallet
I can transfer 100k in GBP free too. BACS limit is £250k. Once I exceed that I have to fall to CHAPs which will cost me about £25 and has no limit. Banking is mostly free in the UK.
AdamGibbins··on Wunderlist founder wants to buy his app back from Microsoft
I used Todoist for years, upon discovering it and following its development on your blog almost a decade ago. Sadly I ditched it a few years back upon discovering the power of start dates, I'd jump back in a heartbeat if you ever added them.
AdamGibbins··on Wunderlist founder wants to buy his app back from Microsoft
Yes I use it daily, it's got some important distinguishing features compared to the competition like Todoist. For example start dates, do not under any circumstance show me a task until it's ready to start. Why Todoist haven't added this after all these years I've no idea, I have so many regular tasks that this is useful for.

AdamGibbins··on MacBook Pro Keyboard Drives Me Crazy
They do not. I've heard their recommended advice if this is a problem is to fork out and purchase yet another laptop at your own cost, and return it within the return window.
AdamGibbins··on Anyone else still using RSS?
Yes, heavily. If your blog doesn't have an RSS feed, I won't read it. NewsBlur is incredibly powerful and makes filtering 100s/1000s of feeds easy.
AdamGibbins··on Apple Card
These are different things. There's a £30 limit on Android/Apple payments, and contactless cards if the payment terminal only supports contactless. If they have a new enough terminal that also directly supports Apple/Android pay, there is no cap.
AdamGibbins··on Docker 19.03: Rootless Mode (Experimental)
Or we could just ditch Docker for one of the alternatives, like Podman that doesn't need root, nor a daemon.

AdamGibbins··on 1Password: Standalone / Local Vault Option Gone?
Yes I read about the secret key, before I became a customer of 1Password. Your response concerns me. I understand you're encrypting the data, and have put in great effort to do so. This doesn't prevent your servers being a target for all sorts of other exploits, hacking of your webservers injecting back doors etc. The fact you halve a lot of clients with secret data makes you a target.
AdamGibbins··on 1Password: Standalone / Local Vault Option Gone?
That's a strange statement, you're a big target because you're holding lots of peoples secret data. Doesn't matter how you model it, unless your model is to have minimal data/clients.

Sadly its invite only and I know nobody with an invite. If anyone fancies throwing one my way it'd be appreciated.
AdamGibbins··on Hledger: Robust Plain Text Accounting
beancount does, you can transparently encrypt your data.
AdamGibbins··on Hledger: Robust Plain Text Accounting
Personally I prefer beancount, incredibly pluggable in python (imo a friendlier language to haskell), additionally much stricter in multiple aspects. Been maintaining my ledger with ledger-cli and then beacount for 10 years now.

AdamGibbins··on EU votes to create gigantic biometrics database
> The European Parliament voted last week to interconnect a series of border-control, migration, and law enforcement systems into a gigantic, biometrics-tracking, searchable database of EU and non-EU citizens.

It is only people already known to the EU.

AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: Do you like/use Reddit's redesign?
No, its buggy and the moderation tools are in-superior especially when you factor in the incomplete RES support.
