Aaargh20318··on “Captain Gains” on Capitol Hill
> The problem with "blind trusts" is that even blind men wink and nudge.

They should only be allowed to invest in a fund that is open to public participation. This should also be public information. You should be able to pick a congresperson and invest in the exact same funds that they do.

> If we don't pay them well (and we arguably already fail to do that[1]), then it becomes really hard for anybody but the independently wealthy to be in Congress

Congress should be paid minimum wage. They are the ones who determined that this is enough to live on so everything above that is wasteful spending of public funds. If they don't think it's enough, they can change the minimum wage to a liveable amount.

Aaargh20318··on Europe is scaling back GDPR and relaxing AI laws
> That cookie banner needs to be standardized and offered by the browser.

That's actually part of these changes. It's mentioned in the linked article about halfway down.

Aaargh20318··on Europe is scaling back GDPR and relaxing AI laws
The law doesn't even mention cookies. This is a common misunderstanding and causes a lot of annoyance as I've seen websites ask for permission to store cookies even when they don't need explicit permission.

The law only concerns itself with tracking. If you don't use a mechanism to uniquely identify people over multiple visits and/or websites, you're fine. You can store simple preferences in a cookie without asking. No need to bother your users with a cookie wall for that.

Apart from it being slow, a memory hog and having a shitty web-based UI that feels out of place regardless of what OS you’re using. It’s missing basic features.

One example is the inability to share only part of your screen. This is essential if you’re working on a large, ultra-wide monitor. There’s been a feature request for this on Microsofts feedback site for years.

Also, how embarrassing is it that the biggest software company in the world is not able to make a decent native app and has to resort to this html-app nonsense.

Aaargh20318··on Why aren't smart people happier?
> The news is not real life.

Wow. Has anyone informed the people getting killed in conflicts all over the world of this?

Aaargh20318··on Why aren't smart people happier?
Far from it. But you only have to watch the news to see the world is a shithole and people are the worst.
Aaargh20318··on Why aren't smart people happier?
You can think that but you’d be wrong.
Aaargh20318··on Dating: A mysterious constellation of facts
> You’re weird. The vast majority of instagram using women take so many photos that the joke is that “the camera eats first”.

I’m not a woman nor do i use instagram or any other kind of social media.

Aaargh20318··on Dating: A mysterious constellation of facts
If I take a picture I’m not in it. If someone else takes a picture they don’t share it with me. How would I get pictures for a profile?
Aaargh20318··on Dating: A mysterious constellation of facts
From the article:

> (…) pictures also give lots of information about important non-superficial things, like your personality, values, social class, and lifestyle.

This is the one thing that puzzles me most about dating apps: where do all these pictures come from? People seem to have pictures of them doing all kinds of activities. When I’m out with friends doing whatever, no one is taking pictures. Even if they did, it’s not like we exchange pictures afterwards.

I genuinely don’t have any pictures of myself.

Are me and my friends weird for not documenting every second of our lives?

Aaargh20318··on Internet's biggest annoyance: Cookie laws should target browsers, not websites
> Of course, also respecting a Do-Not-Track header and avoiding the cookie banner entirely while not tracking the user, would be even better

Best way to get rid of the cookie banner is to just forbid tracking completely. Given a free choice, how many people actually want to be tracked?

You may want to check if you have one of the app listed here[1] on your system.

Electron based apps cause a huge system wide lag on macOS 26 due to the use of a private macOS API[2]. This bug has been fixed in Electron but not all Electron-based apps have been updated yet.

Aaargh20318··on Thieves steal crown jewels in 4 minutes from Louvre Museum
Even if it was relatively simple and security was lax you have to question why they targeted the Louvre.

You can’t fence these items because of how high-profile they are. You can melt them down and sell the gold, but you’d destroy a lot of the value by doing that. Because it’s such a high-profile target you know a lot of resources will be allocated to track you down. You’d think that there be much safer targets to rob that wouldn’t draw as much attention and would provide similar returns.

> Apple's position is technically noble, but that doesn't help their users.

The alternative doesn’t help either. That’s the approach Microsoft has taken and look what a mess Windows is because of it.

Aaargh20318··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
> Why can't we continue with an open web standard?

The EU wallet does use an open standard, and the wallet app itself is developed in public as open source.

Aaargh20318··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
Then you can't use this method of identification, just like you can't use it now. Surely it won't be the only way to identify yourself online. If this provides a frictionless way to do this for 95% of people then it's already a huge win.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

Aaargh20318··on Just let me select text
On iOS 26 you can do basically the same thing. Take a screenshot (power button + volume up), click the thumbnail of the screenshot that appears. You'll see the screenshot full screen and there is a 'translate' button (along some other AI stuff).
Aaargh20318··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
The wallet app can be started using a QR code. You can then finish the verification on your phone and continue on the desktop website/app/whatever.
Aaargh20318··on How I, a non-developer, read the tutorial you, a developer, wrote for me
Related to this is the omitting of units. I encountered something like this in the Android SDK (years ago, dunno if it’s still like this).

    setFontSize(float): sets the font size.
Cool. Sets the font size in what? Points? Pixels? Device-independent pixels? Which of the 12 different types of measurement Android supports is used here? I can’t remember exactly what it turned out to be, but I know it wasn’t the unit I expect for fonts (points).

I have an air purifier in my bedroom. It measures PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 as well as TVOC (Total volatile organic components) and adjusts it's air intake according to the air quality. Usually it runs at very low speed and is inaudible, even at night.

When I start cooking downstairs, within a minute or so I hear the purifier upstairs ramp up to full speed.

> Cheapest Fiat Panda seems to go for €14,700

Cheapest Fiat Panda goes for €19,990 in my country. Taxes on new cars are enormous here.

That seems to be the only ICE model they still sell, and for how long will they stil sell that? The even smaller Fiat 500e is €28,990.
