98codes··on The invisible seafaring industry that keeps the internet afloat
This article definitely wins my award for the most unnecessary scrolljacking -- the animations add no value, are too short, and only serve to delay being to read further in the article.
98codes··on BBC: Big Tech jobs have lost their glamour
It's often not the tech itself but rather the implementation. Enterprise dev is notorious for a reason.
98codes··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced

98codes··on Amazon is chopping jobs at its One Medical and Pharmacy units
The two doctors I regularly saw - my primary care doctor and the one I used when she wasn't available - both left One Medical right after Amazon purchased them. Since then, it's impossible to get an MD appointment, but a flood of new physician assistants will happily see you.

I'm at an age where if I'm going to the doctor, I want a doctor. That's harder to come by.

Costs 8x as much annually and doesn't take insurance?

That's not a real option unfortunately.

> most Canadians want a house somewhere in the woods

As opposed to most Americans, at least those that have been in the industry for a decade or more, who would rather be as far from tech as possible, in whatever direction.

OneMedical customer since well before the acquisition -- the enshittification continues.

Competitor services costing muliples of what OneMedical does keeps me in place for now; that, and getting an appointment and the experience of that appointment at a "normal" doctor's office is still the same as it's always been: scheduling is a massive PITA, and you're lucky if they aren't running at least 30 minutes behind by lunchtime.

98codes··on The Undercover Generalist
That's super common in the US and not just for hedge funds, it's practically everywhere.

Mortuaries?
98codes··on HPV vaccine study finds zero cases of cervical cancer among women vaccinated <14
Talk to your doctor, be honest about your sexual history and current situation. It made sense for me to get the vaccine, but may not make sense for all, or at least not make sense enough to be approved by your insurance.

If it were exactly the same size it could still be silly for city life, depending on the city, the neighborhood, etc. Because it awkwardly sticks out in parking lots? Because you like how it makes you feel, and even better how it makes others feel? That's silly.

Because it's impossible to find parallel street parking (and take up 2-3 spaces when you do) and makes it much easier to hit unseen pedestrians in crowded areas and older layouts with tight corners? Because you need it for work? Not at all silly.

98codes··on Ask HN: Any felons successfully found IT work post-release?
The gap in the Linkedin history says yes, and how cagey OP is being with what they did (there was definitely physical violence involved, just not battery), I suspect they would absolutely mention it if they weren't convicted.
98codes··on Tell HN: Microsoft.com added 192.168.1.1 to their DNS record
Nah, if it's already reverted, they're good to go. A post-mortem with how something like that got through will definitely be on the table though.
98codes··on What will enter the public domain in 2024?
> So they likely don't really care anymore.

I don't think that's possible.

Dr. Gabor Mate¹ should be taken with large grains of salt when it comes to ADHD and related conditions. There is a lack of published research or dedicated expertise on the matter; Dr. Russell Barkley, a leading ADHD expert and researcher², has a good video on the subject³.

98codes··on FCC moves ahead with Title II net neutrality rules in 3-2 party-line vote
> Title II regulation isn't just about net neutrality, Rosenworcel said, arguing that the reclassification will give the FCC more authority to protect national security on broadband networks. "When we stripped state-affiliated companies from China of their authority to operate in the United States, that action did not extend to broadband services, thanks to the retreat from Title II. This is a national security loophole that needs to be addressed," she said.

I know I'm far too cynical these days, but this smells like the beginning of the Great American Firewall.

98codes··on "Hallucinating" AIs sound creative, but let's not celebrate being wrong
When a human reads a bunch of stuff on the internet and regurgitates it as fact, we don't say they hallucinate, we say that they're wrong.

Why we baby AI on this front, I have no idea.

98codes··on The midwit home
I have the same lock, with basically the same underlying rules: any automation should fail towards the old, "dumb", way. I automate light switches more than outlets, and most other things send control commands to those switches. The thermostat is added as well but works just as well as a walk-up-and-change-it touchscreen.

The other rule is that no cloud service ever be necessary. I want heat & lights, even if the internet is out.

98codes··on Minecraft Wiki has decided to leave Fandom
That Starfield launched with https://starfieldwiki.net/ from the same people that have been running the (blessedly old school) Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages (UESP)* has been amazing -- being able to avoid Fandom is a top 10 feature of any game for me at this point.

98codes··on Lead poisoning causes more death, IQ loss than thought: study
Wow -- how often for how long were/are they going?
98codes··on Car allergic to vanilla ice cream (2000)
I had a similar problem, but in the opposite direction. My cable internet speeds at home were fairly good (for the US, anyway), but sometimes would absolutely bottom out. Not dead, just glacially slow. After troubleshooting everything under the sun, I came to realize that the problems would happen not when it was raining per se, but when it was heavily foggy or misting. Normal to heavy rain was fine.

Called the cable company, tech came out. Everything inside was fine, but the cable from the main line to the house had a tiny cut in one spot, not enough to really affect the connection, but enough for ambient moisture to work its way in and foul the connection.

98codes··on A New Mode of Cancer Treatment
I'd say the opposite -- compare it to us: if you take away our internet we get cranky, but we don't lose all ability to think intelligently.
98codes··on Free Public WiFi
There was streaming video -- but not that day, largely. The big US news web sites were struggling to serve up even basic HTML, never mind a stream of any kind.

I was stuck at work and wound up watching the whole thing via a RealPlayer stream from the BBC with a 4x3 inch video.
