I have tried a few times to learn shaders, but it always feels like I'm about 20 years behind on all sorts of random but necessary facts about shaders with no way to catch up in a reasonable timeframe. This book looks like it could help catch me up, and I like that all the code samples are interactive and immediately update.
I forgot to mention that I'd like it to be embeddable. I was in the zig subreddit and asked about that, they said basically no it's not possible to embed it, the best that can be done is bundle zig with my app and run it as a subproc to compile zig code, but then I have to do ipc and shared memory and it's a whole other bundle of worms.
One thing it's missing is arrays/structs as a way to access memory more conveniently, which I think is probably a must-have, though I bet I could add them on top of this language with how small it looks. Well, except that it's written in Rust and I don't understand Rust despite trying many times.
I am leaning towards curlywas strangely enough. It just feels like the right language somehow. Not too low level to be boring to write, not too high level to take the fun out of writing low level code, not too old to consider it abandoned, docs relatively thorough and thoughtful, just enough syntax to make it familiar to C programmers and become a good stepping stone into writing C (maybe).
I tried for a few days to embed clang as a lib just to get it to compile to wasm and got so close and I might pick that project up again because I think it would be a really exciting and fun app.
You're right. I am going to leave HN. Clearly I am not smart enough to be here. Everything I have said here in the past month has been proven wrong by a commenter, and it has gradually dawned on me that I'm just not as smart or experienced or knowledgeable as I thought I was. I'll find some programming subreddit or something that's more at my level. Thanks for helping me see this.
The policy of including the author's name next to the project name, along with some indication that it really is the author and not an imposter, I think that's probably the best we're ever going to get, since at that point it just comes down to community trust.
I don't understand why they want to go with DLLs for scripting instead of WASM + wamr which is really small. Maybe I'm just really inexperienced in this space.
It gives me so much nostalgia for certain Trillian 0.7x skins that I can't put my finger on. Skinning apps was one of the things I wanted to bring back.
I remember learning how simple and pure Makefiles were back in about 2010, and then running into so many bumps that a friend recommended CMake. But usually CMake just uses Make under the hood anyway. I really do like this idea of "build a small, simple, and robust layer, and if it's not good enough, build another layer on top of it." But I do wonder what life would be like if we started from scratch by merging all these layers. Would it be Cargo? Probably not, I doubt it's as flexible as all these layers combined.
For some reason I've found myself wanting a "lighter VS Code" lateley, which is ironic considering I used VS Code for the past 10 years because it is so lightweight. So I've wanted to try out Zed, but it's just ... weird to go back to a closed source editor, especially one that's so focused on imitating copilot, which seems like an odd feature to shift most focus on.
Your website adds "discovering". How do you discover snippets with this? Is there a list of shared snippets? Or do you have to be given a specific link to see one?
Since macOS isn't really designed for power users, that's probably fine.
What was really annoying was Apple Mail randomly opening. Literally just randomly in the middle of my work day, when there's no new mail and no reason at all. Not sure if they fixed that since I moved to Windows 11 about 4 years ago and haven't looked back.
Yeah but it's Zig. Rust is for when you want to write C but have it be easier. Zig is when you want it to be harder than C, but with more control over execution and allocation as a trade off.
It depends. I tried posting a few links I came across over the past few days, and it just showed me dups but they were from days or weeks or sometimes months ago.
