8jef··on Biologists discover four new octopus species
Traditions (old habits + time passed) and rationalizing make people comfortable with eating most animals.

Then, it's easy to grow a conscience when confronted to trendy newish things like so-called sentient animals we never really ate before.

This is a good thing. Growing the masse's consciousness through new fads and phenomenons is a great way to create cognitive dissonance that contribute to changing old habits. Even if one will always encounter resistance to change.

8jef··on Google's origin partly lies in CIA and NSA research grants for mass surveillance
Such wide covert mass surveillance activity from the 90's was unable to catch glimpse of 9/11 before the fact. Doesn't make sense.
8jef··on Canadian federal government will stop investing in new road infrastructure
Title should mention federal gvmnt plan to stop invest in _large_ road infra, specifically, road capacity increases, or enlargements.

In reality, this is all much fluff. This article has clearly been put up by oil lobby. Guilbeault is merely a minor minister in a declining minority party, nothing he does will last.

In Canada, environmental debates have turned religious the same way abortion debates have, all backed by so-called conservatives, which really are born-again extreme far right wingers, or something like that. Trump inspired crazies do call the shots, like in many places right now.

In reality, as Premier Smith framed it, this is much more a rural vs. urban kind of debate that won't be addressed until rurality and rightists stops hiding behind oil lobby nonsense, which might never happen because money.

We're stuck.

8jef··on Grabby Aliens (2021)
The idea of global harmonious cooperation represent the main evolutionary threshold appearing before us all. This should be our future, if We all individually find enough trust in ourselves, and let us collectively evolve in such direction.

And as We, I do not foresee only human beings, but more broadly the Living, as We, interspecies from Earth. Finding a way to unite individualities should include ways to establish communication channels with so-called wildlife individuals.

The idea of considering such a path being esoteric is a way to get distrustful people on board, which may be a waste of time and resources. We should focus on uniting everyone who already think this is the new normal.

8jef··on Target Figured Out a Teen Girl Was Pregnant Before Her Father Did (2012)
Maybe not as old as _the Italian man who went to Malta_ video, but close.
8jef··on Framework DIY 13 Gen AMD Review
Nice.

But this is not a 13th gen AMD. There are 13th gen Intel core cpus, and there are AMD's byzantine naming schemes for Ryzens, which defeats generation counting.

But nice review anyway.

8jef··on Why strive? Stephen Fry reads Nick Cave's letter on the threat of AI [video]

8jef··on Who Is Killing All These Stories About a Controversial Tech Mogul?

8jef··on Is A.I. The Death of I.P.?
IP rights are about retribution to the creators. It might be more important to fix the retribution paradigm rather than fixing IP, which is a broken system.

At the moment, most creators are starving, while everyone, AI included, are feeding on them - big time. Successful then powerful creators only may dream about making AI pay - to them only.

Maybe it's time for some minimum revenue scheme for all creators, on top of heavy limitations on IP. Maybe AI corps can pay for that?

8jef··on HP's CEO spells it out: You're a 'bad investment' if you don't buy HP supplies
The world is ripe for an open source printer hardware project, maybe something we could 3d print, with some raspberry pi as a controller. Please, take my money and do that.

At first, I'd be content with a manually fed dual axis flat tracer, or anything able to transpose a pdf to paper. Really, the printer companies cartel need some opposition here.

8jef··on Is A.I. The Death of I.P.?
Yes, you are right. But.

People do abuse the protections, which are too lengthy, makes possible to sell rights, etc.

In the end, corporations (ab)uses (buy and sell rights) protections for amassing fortunes much bigger than the original creator ever got. That's not right, not fair, at all. System's broken, need fix, throw it all out and build something new, centered around creators.

Give back to creators only, for less time.

8jef··on Is A.I. The Death of I.P.?
I have not read the article, just responding to title:

Hell yeah!

I do wish I.P. dead. Or at least, I wish for a much shorter protection period, and for original authors / artists only. For all the wrong reasons, but primarily, because nothing's sacred. Amen.

8jef··on Don't Say Velcro (2017)
And that explains why lawyers will never get love or sympathy from most living creatures. They'll always have to sue for getting any kind of consideration. In my ideal world, they don't exist at all, or they're called mediators.

But let's be clear: this is an ad. And ad folks are the worst, worst than lawyer, just a notch above dirt. And btw, not buying velcro products anymore.

These predictions may seem absurd at first glance, but I assure you, they're not, to me at least.

8jef··on Everyone Daydreams About Collapse. Few Understand It
Things do change for some, all the time. When someone pushes the envelope, says No to whatever, decides This won't do, things are changing for the better for those involved, because they force change.

If You decide you're gonna accept lower than your real worth, or sell yourself too cheap, because You are afraid of not getting whatever You wish to get, this is when You become the loser You claim you're not.

The truth is: fear will always deceit the fearful, and there is always enough for everyone. You gotta believe it.

8jef··on Thousands of young people are fleeing Toronto – economists say city will suffer
Maybe those traits you give the Canadian populace are there for some reasons you have yet to learn about.

Anyway, no population in this world have ever changed any of their traits because some random douche said they should, quite the contrary.

8jef··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
The middlemen argument isn't valid anymore. Hotels have for the most part forfeited their right to sell directly. Which means whatever they do, they still pay full commission to whomever they are under contract with, unless said booking concerns 10 rooms or more.
8jef··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
I mean there is only one pipeline, to which are contributing many actors, like big agencies (booking, expedia), car rental, airlines, etc. Together, they act as one.
8jef··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
I wish someone from the accommodation industry would tell us all how the central booking system and most hotel chains are abusing everyone, from inn and hotel owners to end customers. Their contracts are pure gold, in the sense that they cloak all possibility of independence under a thick cover nothing can pierce through. Tourism, they are killing it, literally.
8jef··on Pixel 8 Pro
As someone who's mostly buying used tech, or newish at deep discounted price from classifieds or ebay, I appreciate not having to wait 5 years cycles for stuff. Yearly release cycles means people let go sooner of perfectly functioning high end tech very fast, selling for very cheap, and I'm very grateful for that.

Great many containers filled with stuff from rich countries find their way to poor countries, some include stolen goods (like cars), others include garbage, most include goods that still have some value for other people, including tech.

Maybe the problem should be looked at from that angle, and maybe there's no problem, really. One's garbage will always be another one's treasure.

8jef··on Driver hits woman in SF, then Cruise driverless car runs her over
Pedestrians always have the right of way ... on roads where they can be. Pedestrians and cyclists are forbidden on 70 mph highways. If I ever see someone on foot on such highway, after doing my best to avoid that person, I'll call 911 asap to report it.

For anyone mad enough to claim right of way toward a pedestrian, in any situation, just think about the shitload of legal hurdles awaiting you down the road. Not worth it by any standard.

8jef··on EU fines Intel $400M for blocking AMD's market access
The situation is still the same, happening as we speak. This court case is from a long time ago, but look at the market since the Ryzen inception, the last five years, and you'll find it hard to purchase worthwhile AMD stuff outside of some niches (desktop CPUs, low quality plastic gaming laptops with TN screens, or super low quality budget laptops with sub-Ryzen apus). Just go to BestBuy, or browse Newegg, or else, and good luck finding a great Ryzen product in stock that you can purchase. All the interesting stuff, for creators, or graphic designers, or anything high end, they only have Intel products for sale.

Try this: find me an in-stock 2-in-1 Ryzen 7 or 9 metal case laptop with high nits 2k+ touchscreen, no discrete GPU, great backlit keyboard, a large battery, and a spare M.2 slot.

Or try to find anything bizarre or exotic (like those laptop with 2 screens instead of 1 + keyboard). Nothing with AMD, ever.

Almost all are / were easy to find in Intel flavor. Have fun trying to put your hands on any worthwile AMD product.
