8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Poor in Tech
Yes I know where you stand on this, I don't need more information about your opinion.

I asked if you see the conclusion of this view, and if you endorse it.

To be very very clear it goes like this: if poor are fat because they make bad choices and for no other reasons, then you can reasonably conclude that that is also why they are poor. That they deserve to be poor for that reason.

Is that a fair summary of your view?

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Poor in Tech
Yes this is exactly my understanding as well, from inside the US.
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Poor in Tech
If it's not hard to avoid being overweight when poor, and most poor people are overweight... what is happening? Do you see the obvious conclusion here? Do you endorse it?
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Poor in Tech
Yeah I think I've been pretty clear that I think that conversation is possible and also that I think that is not the conversation that is happening in this thread.
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Poor in Tech
I don't know I'm not thrilled to be this negative or correct about this but it's been pretty much exactly what I expected.
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Poor in Tech
I was trying to be nice.

It's worth discussing I just don't think you contributed anything useful to the conversation with that comment.

To me it reads like you're dismissing the author's experiences based on a technicality, rather than engaging with them on their terms and merits.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Poor in Tech
It's normal and cool actually that we can take something that affects a MAJORITY of Americans and is tightly correlated to poverty and make it a matter of individual responsibility and moral weakness.
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Poor in Tech
I don't really see this as a valid criticism of the list though. A person identified a bunch of ways they are not like almost all of the rest of their coworkers.

Do they have the information, experience, or responsibility to accurately categorize the specific cultural origin of every single one of those differences? Does it make the argument weaker if they miss a couple? Maybe a little but it's still strong.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Introverts can make great leaders (2018)
Haha fair enough, sorry I was kind of snarky about it. I thought you were intentionally misinterpreting to start an argument. Good lesson about giving people the benefit of the doubt for both of us I guess.
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Renaming Coq
Huh interesting. Must just be an accent thing. I have a southern US accent in English and American accent with SW France influences in French. To me they aren't that similar but I do see how they could be. You're the native speaker though so I don't really have a leg to stand on here.

Interesting angle that I hadn't considered but I think you're right. I'm reconsidering my position on this one, thank you!
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on How M1 Macs feel faster than Intel models: it’s about QoS
This is a lot of really well expressed information that completely fails to grapple with the fact that most developers write code for the web and apple computers are extremely popular among web developers.

All of the things you mentioned are also true of intel macs, which again are wildly popular among web devs of all kinds.

If you can't explain the popularity of those machines in spite of those limitations, I don't see why I should accept those as reasons why apple arm computers won't be popular.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Introverts can make great leaders (2018)
Did it not register that the very first sentence of my comment was calling the other poster out for that sort of self-congratulatory introvert framing?

Did you read anything in what I described of the book that seemed overwhelmingly positive about introverts because it kind of isn't.

Are you under the impression that I'm an introvert? Because uh no.

I get what you're saying I just don't see why you're saying it to me I guess.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Introverts can make great leaders (2018)
If introverts focus on getting things done what do extroverts do in your eyes? Just hang out?

There's a book about this called Quiet, I it. It's an overview of the like social history of the concepts of intro- and extroversion, and also research about these traits. The difference seems to be more about stimulation and arousal than like social preferences or anything to do with work.

Introverts get more aroused from the same stimulus than extroverts do. This manifests in a bunch of different ways. The social ones are most obvious because human connection is the most common source of intense stimulus in human lives.

But for example extroverts are more likely to be "adrenaline junkies" because they need more stimulus to feel the same degree of excitement. This has nothing to do at all with social stuff or talking or "getting things done" it's just a thing. There are dozens or hundreds of correlations like this.

The interpersonal and social differences are the most obvious effects, but they aren't at the core of what these things are.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on The IRS Is Coming for Crypto Investors Who Haven’t Paid Their Taxes
It's actually the opposite as far as I know. There have been several well-researched articles in the last few years about this.

The automated flagging they use is tuned to find the common mundane violations, which tend to be by normal people with normal resources.

The tax strategies of the extremely wealthy are a good deal more sophisticated and don't lend themselves well to automated checks like these.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on The Lure of H Mart, Where the Shelves Can Seem as Wide as Asia
Your last paragraph I get it but I think that's also a sign of racism? Like say I'm Russian because I kinda am, no one holds me accountable for Putin's actions. The geopolitical positioning of Russia's regime at any given moment doesn't affect how safe I feel in my current country, doesn't affect how strangers feel about me.

The fact that it does for some chinese-americans and other asians.... I'm not sure exactly what it says but there is something there and I don't think it's benign.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on The Pin-Pen Merger (2020)
Code switching. Super common with southerners living outside the south in my experience. We all have various degrees we let the accents out depending on who we're talking to.

I can almost completely hide it at work if I want but I let some through bc people like a little. If I talked to my coworkers the way I talk to my siblings though it would be a disaster because of prejudice around our dialect.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Peter Thiel's Religion
This stuff varies quite a bit by denomination and just tradition honestly.

I mean you also have mainstream preachers telling you that if your faith is strong enough god will reward you with riches, which has been considered a heresy for at least a thousand years.

So I don't know they should be but preachers may not universally be the experts on this unfortunately.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Peter Thiel's Religion
Yeah I am an atheist these days but at the same time life is complex and I guess in some ways I am not not a christian.

I have no respect for wealthy christians! At all! Yer boy Jesus was extremely extremely clear about what is expected of you on this front. He was ambiguous and contradictory on some things but not this one.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Quaker Oaks (2014)
Yeah I don't know what to do with the assumption that going to meeting in meetinghouses in what quakers do either. I've been to a lot of quaker meetings and the venue has been pretty evenly split between traditional meeting houses, normal white American protestant-style churches, and like random community centers and shit.

I think this might be different in the historical quaker strongholds like parts of the US east and England, but even having a quaker meeting house to go to is probably not part of the experience of being quaker for most of them. Shit iirc the majority don't even practice the silent worship anymore right?

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on The Animal Is Tired
Yeah "high degree of internal consistency" and "approachable" are things I want in a test suite not a novel.
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Why does every advert look the same? Corporate Memphis
> If you go to a California black neighborhood and talk to people they are v suspicious of BLM's motives.

Have you done this? I live in a majority black neighborhood but not in California and I talk to my neighbors. I have heard a lot of skepticism and hostility towards _the organization calling itself by that name_. But not towards the movement itself or the phrase it uses to represent itself.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Bob Dylan lays down what killed rock n roll (2016)
I'm not an insider in the music industry so I can't comment on this teacher's view but that seems... possible sure yeah I can see it.

That's totally separate from the algorithm/genre issue though. The genres have never ever really perfectly matched up with the music but it doesn't matter. If the algorithm perfectly selected more music you like you still wouldn't be more likely to look up the name of the track I don't think.

Anyway that soundtrack is... not jpop per se but it is heavily influenced by it. The format and aesthetics are very jazz-like but the rhythms and harmonizations are very jpop. That might not be the most _useful_ association in this context of finding music that sounds similar, but it is there. And in its way as accurate as calling it jazz. Saying it's "actually" jazz or funk is... that's just not really how this works. It's not wrong to say it's jazz but it's wrong to say anything really is ONLY jazz, and can't also be other things too.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on If You Want to Make It as a Writer, for God's Sakes, Be Weird
"People don't like me because of my actions, which says a lot about them but nothing about me somehow."
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Why do older individuals have greater control of their feelings?
Yes this is one of the great advantages of the "some might say" move, love that shit.
8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Why do older individuals have greater control of their feelings?
Yes, I am not disputing that. I am talking about the difference between giving someone advice about a situation they're in, and telling them how to feel about it.

"When I was your age, I didn't appreciate certain things so I'm pointing them out to you" is really different from "this is the best time of your life" which is a statement an external observer is just not equipped to make about someone else's life.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Why do older individuals have greater control of their feelings?
This seems weird and bad. Emotion and "reason" aren't two ends of a spectrum. You likely aren't any more logical or less emotional now than you were before.

I believe you about better control over how you engage with your emotional responses but damn dude. If you were just getting too mad at stuff they got therapy for that you don't hafta roll your own psychic amputations these days.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Why do older individuals have greater control of their feelings?
Who might say that and what would we have to do for them to commit to it?

Are you saying it? Because I don't think it's true at all! But I want to wait until someone actually say it before I get into that.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on Why do older individuals have greater control of their feelings?
I wouldn't call this abuse either but there is a huge huge gulf between "that was the best time of my life" and "this is the best time of your life.

It's at best just extremely rude to tell someone about their own life and how they should feel about it.

8fGTBjZxBcHq··on The Contemplative Life: the monastic cowl (2020)
I don't think their weighing of learning has changed just social needs changed around it.

"Able to read the Bible" was considered important for monks so they were literate. It still is, but now everyone else is literate too so it's not notable anymore.
