7Z7··on How Elmo Ruined Sesame Street
>quick to jump unquestioningly on this

I and many people I know have been saying this since Elmo first became popular. It isn't a new hipster opinion its always been true, for some people.

7Z7··on Leaked Documents Reveal Police Department Planted Drugs for Years, DA Complicit
None of that is ok, and I don't know anybody who feels any of that is (openly enough for me to know about it) ok.
7Z7··on What I learned working at McDonalds for 4 years
Not as bad as you seem to think..

>We don’t add any monosodium glutamate (MSG) to any of our menu items.

>In the UK we do not use any artificial flavour enhancers similar to MSG in any of our products.

>McDonald's UK has a fast turnover of food, and restaurants receive three to five deliveries a week. Food arrives, frozen, chilled or ambient. Our aim is to use as few additives as possible to preserve our food. The majority of the food is preserved by freezing. Other food like sauces are pasteurised and specially packed to reduce the need for preservatives. Breads arrive at the restaurant either frozen or fresh but contain a preservative to prevent mould formation. Cheeses also contain preservatives for this reason. All our beef patties are made from 100% pure beef with no additives, fillers, binders, preservatives or flavour enhancers; just pure forequarter and flank beef. They are individually quick frozen by our suppliers to ensure they arrive at the restaurants in perfect condition.

>McDonald's can assure you that there no additives in any of our salad products which act as preservatives. Our salad is simply made from 100% fresh vegetables. During some periods of the year when the lettuce has taken a long time to grow, a food grade nitrogen is added to the bags on sealing to slow the respiration and maintain quality, however this is referred to a modified atmosphere rather than an ingredient.

>We use fruit that's been cut and frozen. At our restaurants, we add it to our low-fat vanilla yogurt and serve it with granola.

>We use a freshly cracked, Grade A egg for our famous Egg McMuffin sandwich. It gets its iconic round shape when we cook it on the grill with an ‘egg ring.’

7Z7··on My life after 44 years in prison
>But what if the BJS’s findings have been fundamentally misunderstood? That’s the provocative contention of a recent paper published in the journal Crime & Delinquency, the title of which is “Following Incarceration, Most Released Offenders Never Return to Prison.”

7Z7··on Montana Standard newspaper plans to retroactively unmask anonymous commenters
Or wcummings is actually a compiler who closed the quote at the second double-quote mark, when a human would have read it as nested.
7Z7··on Turkey Shoots Down Russian Warplane Near Syrian Border
Yes, it's readily acknowledged that Turkish special forces have trained the Turkmen. But that is not the same as the Turkmen fighters being "Turkish Assets", which suggests command over their actions.
7Z7··on Where to hate daylight saving time and where to love it
>fool proof?
7Z7··on Turkey Shoots Down Russian Warplane Near Syrian Border
>(by Turkish Assets)

Source? Everything I've read says the Syrian Turkmen are certainly allies of Turkey, but not assets.

7Z7··on The Fixed Price of Coca-Cola from 1886 to 1959
Attempts to raise prices

The Coca-Cola Company sought ways to increase their prices, even approaching the U.S. Treasury Department in 1953 to ask that they mint a 7.5 cent coin.[1] The Treasury was unsympathetic. In another attempt, The Coca-Cola Company briefly implemented a strategy where one in every nine vending machine bottles was empty.[1] The empty bottle was called an "official blank".[2] This meant that, while most nickels inserted in a vending machine would yield cold drinks, one in eight patrons would have to insert two nickels in order to get a bottle. This effectively raised the price to 5.625 cents.[1] Coca-Cola never implemented this strategy on a national scale.

7Z7··on Snapping Is the New Clapping
It isn't even a "cool new concept" in the context of the article. It's been used like clapping since at least the beatniks, and possibly since Roman times.
7Z7··on The End of the Internet Dream
That entirely depends on your definition of "shitty".

Some might care about an occasional ad in an app that they chose not to pay for, or never paying for software on principle, and will always choose open. Some might find the need to manage system-level functionality and installation, or make allowances for miserable UI/UX simply because it is open, too much to bear.

7Z7··on Comcast injects JavaScript into webpages to show copyright notices to customers
Sampling without permission of the author/copyright-holder(s) is not remotely legal.
7Z7··on VLC contributor living in Aleppo writing about the Paris attacks
You could say the same thing about Northern Ireland (and the media regularly framed it that way), when "Catholics" retaliated against "Protestants" for some action, or the reverse.

The Troubles in Northern Ireland were never about religion. They were about power, territory and self-governance - it just happened that the two main "sides" in the conflict were also traditionally of different Christian sects - and the easiest way to spoon feed it to the uninvolved masses was under the guise of religious/sectarian animosity because it made it slightly irrational, rather than motivated by oppression.

7Z7··on Ask HN: Is it still too hard to allow “back” buttons on a banking website?
My bank immediately logs me out if I hit the back button (instead of using their "go back" link) at any time during a logged-in session. That's whether I'm making a payment, looking at my statements, setting up direct-debits etc, or just sitting ambiently on the home-screen. It's incredibly annoying.
7Z7··on Do women face a reputational bias when they co-author?
>Person B (me): "Please show me the bias. I haven't seen it."

You didn't only disbelieve his statement, you offered a different claim.

7Z7··on Firefox for iOS now available
>You tend not to hear from us because... we don't use iOS.

Seriously? we hear from the non-iOS tech crowd all the time about how locked down iOS is.

7Z7··on Firefox for iOS now available
People freaked at Microsoft because at the time they were essentially a monopoly. Apple has nothing like a monopoly. Do we need to go through this every time someone tries to make this broken comparison?
7Z7··on Facebook M – The Anti-Turing Test

Clothing also. You cannot copyright an item of clothing, or even a particular cut. Only specific trademarkable additions, such as labelling and, for instance, the specific stitch pattern Levis do on the back pocket of their jeans.
7Z7··on Ask HN: Share an industry secret

7Z7··on I’m Ahmed. Except I’m Not Brown
You think Black and East-Asian teachers are immune from racially profiling a student?

How does their non-whiteness protect them from seeing Brown men and boys, or just Muslims in general, as potential threats?

7Z7··on I’m Ahmed. Except I’m Not Brown
Are you conflating the phrase "whites always get favoured" with the notion of "white privilege"?
