77ko··on Google Chromecast and Google Home Causes Wi-Fi Drops
Got a pixel 2, Chromecast and a Google home and now have lots of wifi woes. The timing being exactly after the pixel 2 (turned in cast and home before, didn't have problems).

Edit: turning of guest mode on all cast devices makes things better (less wifi dropouts) but still bad. Turning of wifi on both the android phones in my house has cleared up the wifi problem (which was really annoying as even spotify kept failing to stream with phones on wifi).

I wonder if Google employees need to test their consumer devices outside the googleplex where the internet is super fast and the industrial grade networking gear deals with such issues automagically.

77ko··on Google Pixelbook Is Google’s New Chromebook
This. I wish Google Drive had a way to give apps permission to access only one folder. i.e I want Kami to be able to only access the "pdfs" folder in my drive.

Right now it seems apps can either access everything or they are restricted to their own private app folder which is hidden somewhere in drive.

77ko··on How Jony Ive Masterminded Apple’s New Headquarters
As an Apple customer, I get the impression that Ive and his design teams time is better spent designing products rather than this building.

Sure, spend billions in it, they have the money, but this article and others suggest people from Apple spent a LOT of time on the building at every stage instead of mostly leaving it up to building professionals like most other buildings are done.

77ko··on Sony open-sources NNabla – a simple, fast and lightweight NN library
Keras[1] does a pretty good job of making NN's simple to use. That said, you still have sort of know whats going on. I do think tools like Keras make using NN and ML easier than a lot of basic programming things.

I believe Google is building or has built some services which you can feed an image or text and it will do some NN magic and spit back the answer.[2]

77ko··on Launch HN: Py (YC S17) – Learn to Code on the Go
Reminded me of SoloLearn, a similar app.

Can't really comment in the Android app as it crashes a couple of minutes into the app.

I'm doing a course at Udacity and they recommend SoloLearn to brush up on basics, including python and HTML etc etc. Partnering with institutions seems to be a good idea.

77ko··on 90% of Python in 90 Minutes (2013)
thanks, its a nice quick ref. bought.

77ko··on Gmail Add-ons
> Are there any good ones left these days?

Not really. I wish the Mozilla Foundation would rejuvenate their email client once and for all.

I found Nylas N1[0] works well, it's cross platform which is a big plus and has plenty of kb shortcuts.

77ko··on Ask HN: Learn Python, R? Or something else?
I started and found Python easier then R. Python is a lot more 'english readable' while R is more like the code you see on Hollywood screens, somewhat indecipherable with magic incantations.

As a starter, you probably need something like dataquest[0] or udacitys[1] data courses.

77ko··on Billionaire Is Reported Seized from Hong Kong Hotel and Taken into China
> who is also the first female leader democratically elected in Asia

There have been plenty of other female leaders elected in Asia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_elected_or_appointed_f...

77ko··on Standard Notes – A notes app with a focus on longevity, portability, and privacy
I want to use Google Keep but it's a lot slower (on a mac) as compared to using markdown notes saved locally and accessed using nvalt or atom
77ko··on Say hello to Google Allo: a smarter messaging app
I'm having the same issue with Duo. it pauses the video frequently. I switched back to FB Messenger, which just works without pausing video.

Google had said something about Google Duo being bandwidth friendly and good for slow connections but FB Messenger is miles ahead, at least in my usage. Which left me quite disappointed with Duo, as I like the idea of using Duo over FB.

77ko··on Say hello to Google Allo: a smarter messaging app
Google is treating video calling as it's own seperate thing.

I much prefer Facebook Messenger where its about the contact, and u call/msg/video them and its all there in one stream.

Google's disjointed approach to messaging/calling doesn't make sense to me or my non-techie friends.

77ko··on Say hello to Google Allo: a smarter messaging app
Not quite:

- Facebook Messenger combines all the functionality of Allo and Duo. - Whatsapp already has voice calling and is adding video soon (so I read on the internet) - iMessage and Facetime integrate in IOS much better than Google Duo does. In IOS, you go to a contact and press facetime. On Android, you go to a contact... then go back out to Duo and call them.

WeChat, of course, does everything that all these apps will ever do - as of many years ago.

77ko··on The Untold Story Behind Saudi Arabia’s U.S. Treasury Holdings
It seems to be that this story has been out there for decades now, and this Bloomberg story just adds a few details.
77ko··on Chromium OS Universal Chroot Environment
It would be nice if Google adopted crouton as a official dev environment and offered a way to backup a crouton environment to Google Drive - just settings and installed packages and user files, making it easy to sign into a chromebook and get started on a complete dev environment (after downloading some files).

Of course it defeats the purpose of chromebooks - simple cloud managed machines - but hey, why not?

77ko··on Disappointed with Europe, Thousands of Iraqi Migrants Return Home
> Mr. Abdulatif was an officer in Saddam Hussein’s army, but > after the invasion by the United States in 2003, and the > subsequent policy of de-Baathification, he was left without > a pension. Then he was caught up in tragedy, like most > Iraqis: Three brothers were killed during the sectarian > civil war. But he has an aunt and cousin who live in the > United States, and their stories motivated him to think of > life elsewhere.

The article talks about more than one migrant. This poor Iraqi's story sounds a lot like a refugee. How safe would you feel after that happening to you?

77ko··on Google to Make Driverless Cars an Alphabet Company in 2016
As Alphabet moves out projects from Google, does that make Google a less interesting place to work at?

And introduce more bureaucracy as now Google Car has to negotiate with Google for access to AI tech, computers, maps etc instead of just using whatever they can?

77ko··on A letter to our daughter
One good answer: It totally changed my perception of Facebook. If the guy at the top is trying to save the world, that automatically makes facebook a lot more appealing, not just to me and many other other I know who have historically been quite suspicious of facebook and its overly invasive privacy 'features'.
77ko··on Introducing the new Google+
Good they are still working on Google plus but what's the difference between a community and a collection? And what happened to circles?
77ko··on Introducing 1Password for Teams
Thanks for the detailed reply. I do like 1Pw - it is so very well thought out on mac and ios that I expected something similar on the android side too. Good to see it is being worked on and will hopefully become a first class app alongside your other apps.
77ko··on Introducing 1Password for Teams
Specific Android issues: - The Android keyboard doesn't autofill fields - in ios I could use the share extension and it would attempt to autofill - the search is hidden behind a menu and isn't present at all in the opening screen - have to go into a category - search is broken - doesn't return a list of searched for items as the ios one does, it displays suggestions instead - if I click on a search result and go back to select a search result I have to search again - design is dated. The ios app looks great the Android one looks really old and dated even compared against last years apps

Overall seems to be a low effort app. Not worth the money I paid for it. Considering switching to an alternative which is more Android friendly despite having laid almost a hundred bucks for ios and Mac apps.

77ko··on Introducing 1Password for Teams
I recently switched to Android from ios and literally everything on 1password Android is vastly inferior to the ios version. It's like the ios app is developed by a crack team of experts while the Android app is developed by a part time intern working for free.
77ko··on What’s the best way to spend $20K to help the common good?
What about delivery? Without a delivery mechanism to those who need it this would be a well meaning but not very useful.
77ko··on The Killing of Osama Bin Laden
I have been to Abbotabad too, and many other places right next to and within military bases in Pakistan, and it is pretty damn easy to live there undetected. No one is driving around checking houses. And even those who do, like meter checkers, are happy enough not to read your meter given say, 10 to 20 dollars worth of incentive.

Also Abbotabad is a real life city, not just some garrison town. And even if it was just a garrison town, it would still befull of un-armed non-military people. How do you think military people live in a garrison city? They aren't faceless storm troopers, many have families living right there. And many, many civilians providing services, from food to dry cleaning to road maintenance to flower delivery etc etc.

77ko··on Google Calendar for iPhone
thanks, found it. Not sure how i missed this before.
77ko··on Google Calendar for iPhone
> Google Calendar for iPhone works with all the calendars you've already set up on your phone.

False advertising: It doesn't work with the FaceBook calendar on my phone - other calendar apps like Fantastical and Apple's own Cal show the FB calendar.

77ko··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
Doesn't that potentially raise the salaries of all non-American engineers who might get jobs?
77ko··on This Google ad has moved people to tears across India and Pakistan
The longest running head of the Pakistan Army in recent decades, General Musharraf, who was also the military dictator of the country for a good portion of that, made a lot of overtures towards some semblance of improving relations. Just pointing out that the Pakistan Army has people in it who think more about than just conflict with India.

Ironic as Musharraf instigated and led the last major Pakistan/India skirmish/war, then moved on to talking peace.
