746F7475··on Perl 6 Released
I don't know, maybe because people like change and/or want to just try something new.

I came into programming little too late to even consider perl5. It's just something I've read through as part of setting up irssi script(s).

To me Perl6 seems fun based on the few things I've read and I don't see any reason not to give it a go. Sure I won't be using it in any "production" build anytime soon, but hey maybe its setup beats the hassle that ruby/rvm brings with it and maybe it's more fun than python.

But you are just renting the software, which makes the decisions
746F7475··on Philips Hue blocks 3rd party lights
You can be upset all you want, but unless it was adverticed as "easily expandable" or whatever then your upset-itness doesn't matter.

I don't know what you are going on about carpets, but to relate it to topic: You are well within your rights to choose the actual lamp in which you use the bulbs.

I don't get why people use such bad examples/metaphores in this topic. Car just is nothing like a light bulb. Another shitty, but little better example would be a gaming consoles. You can't just make a game for new consoles and sell it in stores without going through Microsoft or Sony. Are they within their rights to restrict who can make what kind of games for their consoles? Are they entitled to profit off of each game sold? After all they "just" made the consoles, we buy them, shouldn't we get to choose which games we play and how we obtain them?

746F7475··on Philips Hue blocks 3rd party lights
Your car metaphor is completely off. It's not like Philips updated your lights to only light up in specific location.

But cars are a good example, say your automatic shifter breaks. There are no real third party options, you've pretty much got to buy a new one from the manufacturer or by used one. You can still do all normal car things with it you just can't use third party pieces. Same with the lights, they still work, they shine light and do everything that they did before now you JUST can't use third party bulbs with the system.

If you want to go with other shitty analogies say you made a game, something like an MMO that has monthly fees. You sank a lot of money developing the game, the box price isn't high because you know you'll make your money from the monthly fees. You also use money from the monthly fees to improve the game, fix bugs, add content. Now your subscription model is a little strange, it works by players entering a code on your website. They buy it from your online store, get it in their email and use it to get play time. Now let's imagine that your security isn't absolute and some third party figures out how your keycode generator works and they start selling codes for half the price. Now your paying subscriber count is shrinking. What do you do? Do you A) fix the problem which results into many users losing money since they already bought several months worth of play time from this company? or B) leave the system as it is because openness or something like that?

Am I only one who doesn't see a problem here? Sure it would be nice if company X allowed me to use cheaper Chinese knock-offs with their product, but to me, they are well within their rights to decide: "hey, we don't want competitors to benefit from our product(s)"

In essense Phillips put money into R&D and marketing and if you are to believe the linked article into making smart lightbulbs mainstream. That shit is not cheap so why would they give money for their competitors? This move forces others to build their own base system and what not, which is fair.

I am sure you can find open{source|hardware} alternative if you don't wish to support Phillips anymore.

746F7475··on Show HN: FuckFuckAdblock
Majority of people aren't blocking ads and considering how low ad revenues are while the amount of ads blocked might seem high it doesn't really affect the revenue as much as advertisers like to suggest.

I remember trying to use this for school stuff, but I didn't find it all that useful. There is after all very little you have to remember that isn't about schedules
746F7475··on Uninstall Notepad++ if you have voted for FN
I wasn't advocating for Atom, but ST2 is expensive for average users while Atom provides same features and is free
746F7475··on Uninstall Notepad++ if you have voted for FN
Why wouldn't you just less that?
746F7475··on Uninstall Notepad++ if you have voted for FN
Does someone actually still use Notepad++? Everyone I know has moved on years ago and now with Atom and stuff there really doesn't seem to be any selling points.
746F7475··on Car turns driver in for hit-and-run
If I've drank anything in the past 24 hours there is no amount of money you can offer me to drive a car. There are fundamental differences like that.
746F7475··on Car turns driver in for hit-and-run
No reason to drive while drunk and people who are driving drunk will do so no matter how much public transportation there is just as people who wont drive won't drive even if there was no busses, trains or taxis.

In my opinnion the flaw in your question is that 'all' conspiracy theories are wacky or can be made wacky by the believers. At that point all you can do is weight the evidence for and against and come to your own conclusion, but at the end of the day the conspiracy theorists have the burden of proof.

I work as software tester and my job is to come up with scenarios, find edge cases and write automated tests continuous integration. My main tools are Jenkins and Robot Framework.

746F7475··on Google and ASUS Launch the $85 Chromebit, a Chrome OS Desktop on an HDMI Stick
Some (older) people have biases towards laptops (since their experience is limited mostly to older crappy laptops) and just suggesting that a laptop would be better than their current, ancient, desktop is met with refusal and denial.

I know this situation since my mother falls into this camp. When she last moved I tried to convince her to buy a laptop, but she refused. Later I got her Chromebook which she likes on travels, but still refused to use at home, but continuously complains how slow her desktop is.

I'm seriously considering if getting one of these for her would fix the situation. She could still use her old keyboard, mouse and display, but I bet performance would go through the roof (compared to her old PC), but I don't know how compatible things like printers and scanners are with this and would running mouse, keyboard, printer, scanner and external HDD off of same USB port introduce some bottlenecking

746F7475··on Misusing Bootstrap
I don't know, I mean, there are OK arguments against using bigger libraries, but if I'm just making a basic front-end for my toy application or for a hackathon I'm gonna just use bootstrap to get something that looks decent fast. I'm not going to spend time designing the front end (unless that's the whole point of the project)
746F7475··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services

746F7475··on How Finland plans to implement the first nation-wide basic income in the EU
But I don't see why you need to live in London? You might like it and want to live there, but then you need the money to be able to.

Like I could move to Helsinki if I wanted to on my current salary, but I see no reason to do so. I live in smaller city (or maybe it's even considered a town) and I have plenty of extra money left over after my rent.

746F7475··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
I have some (nearly) free AWS instance running irssi for me.
746F7475··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
Yeah, but I don't like the idea of having my connection be routed through random VPS providers. I'd have to get a server from a reputable datacenter where only I'd get physical access to the machines.
746F7475··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
I talked long and hard with my ISP when they discontinued my "phone" connection and pushed me faster (jump from 8Mb/s to 100Mb/s) connection via TV cable and only way they can deliver me connection where I can expose ports to the Internet is 3G connection (which works around 3-5Mb/s where I live on a good day)

I'm not ISP locked, but no other ISP offers me anything else since: "we don't offer worse service since we can offer you faster connection via TV cable".

746F7475··on Teensy weensy crypto
You are talking about "users" a lot, I doubt the author actually tried to suggest that this was used in some kind of "product" rather that if a encryption can be spread via tweet it makes no difference how you try to ban it's usage, the bad actors ARE going to be able to encrypt their messages, you are just banning honest citizens usage.

Potential bannable use-case for this "bad crypto" is some criminal organization messaging each other and if they are smart enough to use this they can also come up with good password which makes the banning again completely irrelevant and the kicker is that criminals aren't going to use this "bad crypto" they are going to use something even stronger

746F7475··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
It's sad that if you want a fast Internet around here you are put behind ISP wide NAT which means you can't host anything from home, so all these "self-hosted" things aren't really self-hosted for me.
746F7475··on How Finland plans to implement the first nation-wide basic income in the EU
Why would they? Would people in general be "earning" more money from basic income than current benefits? I mean you can't increase rent past the point people are able to pay.
746F7475··on Don't copy paste from a website to a terminal
I probably have super skewed view on the matter, but what is the point of expelling someone for cheating? Not everyone learns the same way and not everyone needs the same set of skills/knowledge. I feel like people put way too much value on a degree considering what real world is like.

So far in my short SW engineering career I haven't used a single thing I "learned" from my B.Sc degree, but what school did was to let me hang around with same minded people for few years which encouraged us to work on side projects together which taught us way more than any class.

That being said, I didn't cheat either, but I don't think cheating once is a good grounds for expelling someone.

746F7475··on Is Dublin Airport tracking passenger phones without their permission?
There would be at least service gaps if you changed MAC on the fly while connected to a network. At worst your packets would go to another device, unless your device announced it's MAC change, which would render the whole operation pointless.

And sniffing for probe requests is way more revealing than just sniffing MAC addresses. Only real solution is to turn off all WiFi and bluetooth devices, latter is getting harder and harder with smart watches, wireless headphones and other stuff.

That being said I'm not worried about being tracked while I move through an airport, since they already have cameras. Also your ticket is pretty telling, they know when it gets printed out, when it gets scanned in security and when it's scanned in the boarding, so you have always been tracked. This just brings more accurate data how long it takes for you to get from point A to B.

746F7475··on Is Dublin Airport tracking passenger phones without their permission?
Well, imo you can argue that it belongs to the device and it's only tracking how the device moves through customs/security/whatever and if they don't attach that info to your name/picture/whatever-other-info then they aren't actually tracking you, just your device.

But I wouldn't be worried about just MAC tracking, you get far better and accurate information by tracking probe requests. Just by capturing probe requests you can at times guess where the target lives, works and even where they spend their free time.

746F7475··on Facebook '2G Tuesdays' to better understand markets like India
Even with faster speed available I used 2G for a year because I got it basically for free. Only recently with change to my job I upgraded to 3G to get better audio streaming while on move. Spotify worked fine when I was stationary, but couldn't keep up with me on the highway.
746F7475··on 1Password Leaks Your Data
Well 1Password is a good solution, expect this meta leaking and I guess U.S. gov can hoover up all that data and see where you are logging in, but I don't know, you just have to weight the options. Actually now that I'm employed and not a student I could easily afford LastPass' yearly fee for mobile, but the LogMeIn buying them thing is a big no-no for me for now. I have to check back in few months or a year and see if LastPass is still usable. Or maybe I'll just try my hand at writing myself a custom solution
