71bw··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
You either don't know a lot of people or surround yourself with a very particular crowd...
71bw··on Approximating Mathematical Constants Using Minecraft
The "quit having fun" meme immediately springs to mind[1]. I, personally, know damn well that if this was around when I was at this level of mathematics I'd probably enjoy the field a bit more instead of growing a life-long hate and fear of math

71bw··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
ReBARUEFI was enough to get it working on an ASUS P8P67-something something when I tried it in January-ish.

71bw··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
>Well informed gamers know Intel's discrete GPU is hanging by a thread, so they're not hoping on that bandwagon.

If Intel's stats are anything to go by, League runs way better than it did on the last generation and it's the only game that has had issues on the last-gen that's still left running on DX9, CS:GO was another notable one but CS2 has launched since and the game has moved to DX12/VK. This was, literally, the biggest issue they had - drivers were also wonky but they seem to have ironed that out as well.

71bw··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
>Plus, do you want a 2nd hand GPU that was used for cryptomining 24/7?

...which will be most likely in better condition than anything that was used for, let's say, gaming...

71bw··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
I've never seen "2.5K" used colloquially and I see "2K" used everywhere all the time.
71bw··on When was the famous "sudo warning" introduced? (2019)
I've always had issues with nopasswd, maybe it's just a thing with how I'm doing it but it never seems to work in Arch
71bw··on The success and failure of Ninja (2020)
Sounds like a hardware issue, works fine on my machine. No speed issues at all.

71bw··on A washing machine for human beings, from 1970
...I wash everything on a 40*C program designed for cotton fabrics and have never had an issue with anything.

Even better, been complemented by a family member recently that they have never seen a wool blanket be washed this well... lol

71bw··on A washing machine for human beings, from 1970
Short hair man here who regularly takes hour-long baths... ;')
71bw··on A new start after 60: I became a 'hummingbird' for people with dementia
Sadly, I can relate to this. I wouldn't wish such an experience even to my worst enemies. You see people turning into a husk of themselves, and all the family in-fighting, where one side wants to help them and the other considers them nothing more than a burden... Terrible.
71bw··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
And that is the entire point. You will only use the X state-mandated websites. You will only express positive opinions on there. You will not criticize the government under any circumstances. Glory to Arstozka.
71bw··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
>I've heard many say online that this law is sold as "save the children" but is designed to be used to get everyone to provide ID when they go/public/message online.

Because this was attempted already, for example with the UK "porn ban" law. And Australia is one of the few countries that are even more batshit insane when it comes to policing and controlling its own population, and possibly the only country where such a law could pass now.

71bw··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
Nothing will change - other than perhaps the app they use.
71bw··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
>I am OK with this ban for the same reason I'm OK with tobacco sellers being not allowed to sell to under 18s.

And yet almost anywhere in Europe this ban is completely ineffective as the kids who start smoking get their hands on the cigarettes regardless. It only is a VERY minor inconvenience until they grow 18.

71bw··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
>On a site like HN, I would have expected there to be much more people who also had the same experience as younger me with the internet and social media.

The majority of people who actively engage in discussions here are from generations older than ours (I assume we are similar in age) and hence are mostly unable to relate to our experiences.

71bw··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
> If you have an addicted/bullied child would you make them a social pariah and create interminable arguments by taking away their devices?

They'd be addicted/bullied regardless?

71bw··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
>Kids understand when you say it's against the law.

Jesus, were you born 40? I don't know a single person who didn't willingly pirate media, games and break other laws (usual suspects like trespassing, underage + public drinking...) as kids and teens. They will not care about the law if they want to do something it limits.

71bw··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
In what way do you think they'll be able to verify your age reliably without you having to, yourself, "willingly", hand over your PII?

I went the "batshit insane" route and my microphone hole is plugged in with some clay.

It did most likely physically damage it forever, but at least I now know it's OFF for good.

Blocking any innovation and forcing ridiculous tech like EVs via blocking any reasonable development + production of gas vehicles. For example.
71bw··on OpenAI hits pause on video model Sora after artists leak access in protest
>It seems like signing up as the volunteer with the goal of derailing the company as much as possible is a highly valid form of ptotest.

It's the most immature and pseudointellectual form of protest I can think of. "Oh I am scared of the technology that's coming regardless, let me try and screw everybody else over as well!"

71bw··on GenChess
As per usual. If we weren't such a big market we'd already be left behind by everyone else due to all the bullshit happening in the EU legal-wise.
