6r17··on Show HN: Vertex.js – A 1kloc SPA Framework
1kloc is a bit abstract ; it seems you are in a great position to give a true bundled weight ; preact is about 3kb which is my fav for years - good job for the effort and results !
6r17··on What I learned while trying to build a production-ready nearest neighbor system
"What I learned" - where ? couldn't be more bait-click.
6r17··on Minimal x86 Kernel Zig
"Considering that we are talking about experimental toys which have lower odds of seeing production than of you winning a national lottery jackpot"
6r17··on Minimal x86 Kernel Zig
If you read yourself you'll realize your answer i highly toxic, quiet honestly completely irrelevant, discouraging other people from doing what they like. I would get rid of people with your attitude, you are the kind of problem I don't want to have to deal with and more than that, I don't want to have juniors have to deal with you. Please realize that you had your chance and you played it. Nobody ow you an explanation if you can't even get basics up.
6r17··on Minimal x86 Kernel Zig
I'm very surprised it's *that* short - handling one in rust i'm surprised by the very low amount of code to get that up. Thanks or sharing that was a first time reading some Zig for me !
6r17··on Minimal x86 Kernel Zig
What's the point writing another kernel in C ???
6r17··on 14-year-old Miles Wu folded origami pattern that holds 10k times its own weight
I don't know - i'm 33 ~ now - recently with AI learning is much easier - don't get me wrong I definitely won't say that the brain does not slow down - but I'd definitely argue that we have advantages over kids - be it discipline, knowing how to learn ; and stuff like that - for example let's take coq which is I suppose one of the hardest thing we can learn - you can decompose it in ways myself as a kid or as a 20yo wouldn't even be able to. What I mean is that there is a lot of complexities or stuff i would get stuck upon that I just fly over today and know I'm alright - much better ability to focus in a sense
6r17··on Zig – io_uring and Grand Central Dispatch std.Io implementations landed
I feel like this is doomerism with high bias - i'm sorry but there is nothing founded here ; for all I know ; if Zig is able to put only one good reason to be used - some people will use it and not care - however this is a purely logical statement and I do not know of Zig so I might be blind here.
6r17··on Deutsche Telekom is throttling the internet
please. I don't understand how the fuck we still don't have p2p social networks and private sharing groups. The amount of possibilities to f* up any kind of control are massive - it's just that we end up writing some convoluted distributed mainframe when all people need is p2prss.
6r17··on Banned C++ features in Chromium
I'm not a c++ user but i'm pretty sure you should be able to pull-off a macro to do that ; in c you could alias the lib for something that breaks + alert ; I don't know how I would integrate such additional compiler checks in rust for other kinds of rules however - it's interesting to think about
6r17··on I set all 376 Vim options and I'm still a fool
Am I the only crazy one that bound awsd to movement ?
6r17··on OpenBSD-current now runs as guest under Apple Hypervisor
I wonder if openbsd is secure running as a guest ? it it able to isolate it-self sufficiently so that the host cannot mathematically breach it ? (which makes openbsd very suitable for keyholding)
6r17··on AWS European Sovereign Cloud
Yeah.... no thx. Hard voice against it and anything that comes from the US. There is tons of stuff that is genuinely cool, we got tons of stuff it would be barbaric to spit in the soup.

However I'm pretty sure at this point that even the GAFAM are tired of this situation and that they don't care if giants their size show up in Europe. I'm genuinely thinking that what is also happening with AI (eg : free knowledge drop) is some kind of mechanism to allow those new giants to emerge in other places than US.

Being the bright star that takes all the broken stuff on the head is not always the smartest move - at some point if you are blocking everything from showing up just because you exist, you are just slowly creating conflict against you - which i'm pretty sure the GAFAM are not interested in.

I'm pretty sure there is a lot of power dynamic shift happening just now, AI bubble is just a tool that permit it -- the amount of startups that are allowed to launch on the simplest product are crazy --

tldr : creating incumbents then beating them is a display of power ; not caring is a display of power, having too much money is a display of power, being blocked due to political and social movement is weakening the velocity of these entities - i'm pretty sure atp that creating new giants in Europe would help them more than to continue in what appears like a colonialist endeavor - which they probably don't like either (they just want to market and win)

Idk I might be extrapolating like a mad man

6r17··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
I'm wondering if there are any research groups led by sociologist that explore this topic which may be helped by a group of volunteer ?

I've always wondered why applications like Tinder etc... have not been completely destroyed by open-source already ?

We also forget that communities are essentially what allowed this escape in the first place ; I remember going to psytrance festivals but there are so many more escapes : theater, cinema groups, even in tech you have meetings for rust, programming languages and what not

There is definitely some kind of knowledge around being active in life ; and on that point I do not think that working count as active (I'm myself a workaholic so i'm definitely not the best example here)

There are other drivers for isolation than not knowing how to integrate though - it's not always easy to find people who share those common interest or mindset.

It's a very polarized time period which only exaggerate this - the best way to fight it off is to literally do something meaningless with people (eg : play)

6r17··on Generate QR Codes with Pure SQL in PostgreSQL
Could be added to SQL test suites tbh
6r17··on A 40-line fix eliminated a 400x performance gap
I have that 10-30s time window to fill when claude might be loading some stuff ; the 1 liner is exactly what fits in that window - it makes me wonder about the original idea of twitter now that I think of it - but since it's not the same kind of content I don't bother with it.It really feels like "here is the stuff, here's more about it if you want to" - really really appreciate that form and will definitely do the same format myself
6r17··on A 40-line fix eliminated a 400x performance gap
Very thankful for the 1liner tldr

edit : I had an afterthought about this because it ended up being a low quality comment ;

Bringing up such TLDR give a lot of value to reading content, especially on HN, as it provides way more inertia and let focus on -

reading this short form felt like that cool friend who gave you a heads up.

6r17··on Influencers and OnlyFans models are dominating U.S. O-1 visa requests
The painting of idiocracy hits hard doesn't it ?
6r17··on Meta announces nuclear energy projects
Let's be honest it's one of the smartest and most useful place anyone could be investing - it's literally is whatever happens a way to contribute to mankind - even if it's just so that FB servers are off-grid ; it's still a huge win, I just hope Mark realize he has much more potential than what he is doing rn
6r17··on Open Chaos: A self-evolving open-source project
I mean.... it's the spirit of the project to eventually be able to reach to that state. I freaking love that project woaw hahaha
6r17··on Show HN: Similarity = cosine(your_GitHub_stars, Karpathy) Client-side
Ok so i've not been using github for the past 2 years; it matched me closed to Salvatore Sanfilippo with subtitle "creator of redis" - and It just happens that I did write a key-val and more generally working on a database in the meantime.

I don't know how to feel about this lmao

6r17··on Comparing AI agents to cybersecurity professionals in real-world pen testing
Do you think they could move toward other technologies if they show maturity in that sector that AI cannot provide ?
6r17··on Show HN: Server-rendered multiplayer games with Lua (no client code)
Cheating with AI will be possible even with server side rendering ; nvidia has released models able to learn to play - it's going to be very difficult to detect whether it's an AI or a human ; very impressive however
6r17··on Web development is fun again
Ultimately it's up to the user to decide what to do with his time ; it's still a good bargain that leaves a lot of sovereignty to the user. I like to code a little too much ; got into deep tech to capacities I couldn't imagine before - but at some point you hit rock bottom and you gotta ship something that makes sense. I'm like a really technical "predator" - in a sense where to be honest with myself - it has almost become some way of consumption rather than pure problem solving. For very passionate people it can be difficult to be draw the line between pleasure and work - especially given that we just do what we like in the first place - so all that time feel robbed from us - and from the standpoint of "shipper" who didn't care about it in the first place it feels like freedom.

But I'd argue that if anyone wants to jump into technical stuff ; it has never been so openly accessible - you could join some niche slack where some competent programmers were doing great stuff. Today a solo junior can ship you a key-val that is going to be fighting redis in benchmarks.

It really is not a time to slack down in my opinion - everything feels already existing and mostly already dealt with. But again - for those who are frustrated with the status-quo ; they will always find something to do.

I get you however that this has created a very different space where past acquired skill-sets don't necessarily translate as well today - maybe it's just going to be different to find it's space than it was 10 years ago.

I like that the cards have be re-dealt though - it's arguably way more open than the stack-overflow era and pre-ai where knowledge was much more difficult to create.

6r17··on Linux kernel security work
I have to disagree it's worst than you think ; open-bsd has so many mitigation in place that your computer will probably run 50% slower than a traditional OS. In reality you do not want to be playing 100% safety everywhere because this is simply expensive. You might prefer to create an isolated network on which you can set up un-mitigated servers - those will be able to run at 100% capacity.

This can be looked upon when compiling the linux kernel, the mitigation options are rather numerous - and you'll have to also pick a sleep time ; what i'm saying is - currently linux only allows you to tune a machine to a specific requirement - it's not a spaceship on which you can change the sleep time frequency; dynamically shutdown mitigation ; and imagine that you are performing - In the same spirit, if you are holding keys on anything else than open-bsd ; I hope for you that you have properly looked up what you were installing.

6r17··on When someone says they hate your product
I often use it as a self-reflection for myself ; i'm working solo so my exploration is really different - (thankfully I work on tools I use myself). Anger / Frustration can definitely be measured from text only - I don't necessarily need to "drive" a discussion to try to get an explicit confirmation of what is going wrong - that signal is a strong enough information to indicate for something important (or that the user is just mad). Being able to switch from mad -> chill is definitely the point where we can digest why something is happening - and depending on the context it can definitely underline important focus points to improve.
6r17··on When someone says they hate your product
Frustration is the fuel for innovation.
6r17··on LLMs Are Not Fun
I was about to write something really emotional and clearly lacking any kind of self reflect ; then I read you again ; and I admit there is a lot of part of this that is true.

I feel like it may be something inherently wrong in the interface more than the actual expression of the tool. I'm pretty sure we are in some painful era where LLM, quiet frankly, help a tons with an absurd amount of stuff, underlying tons and "stuff" because it really is about "everything".

But it also generate a lot of frustrations ; I'm not convinced of the conversational status-quo for example ; and I could easily see something inspired directly from what you said about drawing ; there is something here about the experience - and it's really difficult to work on because it's inherently personal and may require to actually spend time, accumulate frustration to finally be able to express it through something else.

Ok time to work lmao

6r17··on We replaced H.264 streaming with JPEG screenshots (and it worked better)
I wonder if we could scan / test / dig these hidden features somehow ; like in a scrapping / fuzz fashion
6r17··on Meta is using the Linux scheduler designed for Valve's Steam Deck on its servers
Tbh i'm starting to think that I do not see microsoft being able to keep it's position in the OS market ; with steam doing all the hard work and having a great market to play with ; the vast distributions to choose from, and most importantly how easy it has become to create an operating system from scratch - they not only lost all possible appeal, they seem stuck on really weird fetichism with their taskbar and just didn't provide me any kind of reason to be excited about windows.

Their research department rocks however so it's not a full bash on Microsoft at all - i just feel like they are focusing on other way more interesting stuff
