6SixTy··on Bpftune uses BPF to auto-tune Linux systems
As an insane Gentoo user, sign me the F*** up
6SixTy··on M4 Macs can't virtualise older macOS
You are forced to use macOS if you want to make apps for macOS. If there's some difference between an older macOS and the latest one, you can't run said older version, get to the bottom of what's happening, and patch your application to fix it on the M4 Macs.
6SixTy··on M4 Macs can't virtualise older macOS
Distribution maintainers pretty much do whatever they want with the OS level ABI. That on top of whatever those user space libraries want to do anyways makes native application ABI stability basically impossible.
6SixTy··on Multiple new macOS sandbox escape vulnerabilities
Android does have support for external keyboards and I know mice work but not the totality of pointing devices. There was a desktop experience with Samsung's DeX, complete with floating windows, but the experience was severely broken due to lackluster app support and clashing design priorities between touch and mouse.

Thing is that Android is probably no more secure than a standard desktop experience specifically due to the very uncontained Play Store, the prevalence of sideloading apps and rooting doesn't really help at all.

6SixTy··on An Update on Apple M1/M2 GPU Drivers
Game Porting Toolkit isn't a response in this scenario. All advertising for GPTK is aimed squarely at publishers, and even Whiskey has to pull a binary out of a back alley for D3DMetal. Apple is essentially doing nothing and hoping it works.
6SixTy··on Steam games will need to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pages
Whenever there's community servers, hack v. hack servers are bound to follow. For integral game mechanics? There's almost always a mechanic balancing anything hack adjacent.
6SixTy··on Disposable vapes to be banned in England and Wales
Think they really got started after the FDA/ATF started to crack down on Juul, which gained significant popularity over previous designs by focusing on usability and convenience by using a capsule as you have mentioned. Since that point, Juul shrank significantly and Chinese disposable vapes came in to fill in the vacuum and effectively dodge most regulations.

That's the story at least in my head and in the US.

6SixTy··on Disposable vapes to be banned in England and Wales
There are plenty of people with motor issues where a straw really does mean having the freedom to drink on your own. Also, in the US, ice is more popular to add to your drink and a straw means not getting blasted with a bunch of ice.
6SixTy··on Arm is canceling Qualcomm's chip design license
You sure? Microsoft dropped Alpha, MIPS, and PowerPC by the time Windows 2000 rolled around. Beyond that point, only the Xbox 360 and Itanium versions had anything different to the usual X86/64 offering.
6SixTy··on Arm is canceling Qualcomm's chip design license
Even the base integer instructions are Turing complete in RISC-V. Only instruction extensions that could be a point of contention are Matrix operations, as T-Head and Tenstorrent already have their own. Even then, I can't find a reason how this "clash" is any different than those in the x64 or ARM space.

Even if Qualcomm makes their own RISC-V chips that are somehow incompatible with everyone else's, they can't advertise that it's RISC-V due to the branding guidelines. They should know them because they are on the board as a founding top tier member.

6SixTy··on 555 Timer Circuits
Only problem is that an oscilloscope isn't accessible to beginners. It's a specialist piece of equipment that takes time to learn how to use, and are furiously expensive at best for someone who doesn't know they might like electronics to buy. That's fundamentally why people are lauding the benefits of microcontrollers, figuring out what's wrong with one doesn't require an O-scope.
6SixTy··on 555 Timer Circuits
Arduino is very much less about the board itself, and more of a software framework. Every single "Arduino compatible" board beyond the standard Uno or Micro have a bunch of macros essentially just telling the compiler what the standard Arduino pin definitions go where. That even extends to boards like the 2560, since I know the port registers and the silk screening on that board are completely different.
6SixTy··on Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon Dev Kit, refunds all orders
Doesn't help that there's a ton of different hardware vendors that likely have their own ACPI bugs, effectively making good power management impossible.
6SixTy··on We outsmarted CSGO cheaters with IdentityLogger
Any decently competitive scene is going to develop cheaters in some form or another. MOBAs, Minecraft, Fortnite, at minimum I've heard about cheating some form or another. Any speedrunning community is going to face cheaters in some form or another doesn't matter what community you are talking about.

FPS games are kind of the gold standard when it comes to competitive environments, and thus gather cheaters or people complaining about cheaters substantially more than most other game genres.

6SixTy··on 'Students who use AI as a crutch don't learn anything'
I've been working with a CS student that often does not understand why her code doesn't work, does not want to understand how to improve herself, nor want break down a situation to it's bare components and apply them to new situations.

I could give a bunch of long (and probably butchered) stories of my sessions with her, but in short, she's expects to be spoon fed the answers without properly digesting why they are the answers. She turns to ChatGPT because it will just automatically give her the answers without forcing her to do any thinking, just copy + paste in order to tick off another assignment.

There's probably a middle ground where you could use ChatGPT properly, but I've had her reach towards ChatGPT once for what essentially amounts to spelling errors that she never notices herself or pay attention to errors telling her that she spelled something wrong. It's kind of hard to be supportive of a tool when the tool itself can essentially act like a replacement of your thinking cap and can't say no.

6SixTy··on MikroPhone: A privacy enhanced, simple and featured RISC-V mobile phone
Why is this being pitched as a complete solution? There's no concrete explanation why it's more secure, just open source software = secure while rolling it's own stuff; and there's baffling component choices that completely conflict with each other. A color 400x840 screen is not needed for a "simple" phone, and having any possibility of redundant BT/WiFi radios is a baffling oversight.

There's 2 different ideas here, and instead of splitting them up into their own discrete projects that can excel at both ideas, they are turned into 1 mediocre project. Also, exposing JTAG in your final product and forgetting about physical security aren't good looks either.

6SixTy··on Varlink – IPC to replace D-Bus gradually in systemd
My point is, what's stopping me from creating yet another IPC standard?
6SixTy··on A Bendy RISC-V Processor
This is mostly for medical applications. Wearable, maybe implantable, electronics for monitoring vital signs are a real thing that could completely change form with flexible processors.
6SixTy··on Varlink – IPC to replace D-Bus gradually in systemd
So does this mean I can shove SQLite databases into the file structure, abstract away an entire SQLite engine into a single header that you are forced to use, and declare that IPC? And you know, since we _are_ already hiding databases within the file structure, why not use it to also unify configuration and installation files too? What could go wrong?
6SixTy··on Britain buys semiconductor factory for defence purposes
All I can find is that the plant works with 6 inch Gallium Arsenide wafers.
6SixTy··on Porsche's idea for a six-stroke internal combustion engine
Do you actually miss DOS or just long for the CLI? Due to the culture of the x86 ecosystem, DOS hasn't gone anywhere; and the CLI is pretty much the default UI for most UNIX like operating systems out there.
6SixTy··on We could be witnessing the death of the graphics card in real time
Saying anything but the Switch has an iGPU is a very literal interpretation of what an iGPU constitutes. I'd wager that fairly modest power consumption (10-30W) and (non G) DDR memory constitutes the soul of an iGPU. PS5 and XSX do not fit those definitions, as do the Xbox One (eSRAM) and PS4.

People already have their own opinions when graphics peaked, but depending on when they set that threshold, I honestly can't help but respond with look around at the level design.

And streaming has natural latency and quality issues that can't be resolved. Almost every game streaming service is incredibly niche, dead, or BYOG.

6SixTy··on The Cheating Device (ChatGPT on a TI-84) [video]
Nspire CX class were powerful enough to run quite a lot of GBA games. And I think the Ti-84 is probably still kicking around because no one really wants to bother buying more overpriced calculators that work just fine. The Z80 TIs are quite interesting in their own right, but a good majority of people are probably bored just thinking about such a device. Same thing with the Z80 based Rabbit 2000/3000/4000.
6SixTy··on Linux/4004: booting Linux on Intel 4004 for fun, art, and no profit
There's the Turing award, which is an equivalent prize for computing. Could add an acknowledgement for strange and unusual applications of computer science.
6SixTy··on Show HN: iFixit created a new USB-C, repairable soldering system
Even compatibility with TS100/Pinecil V2 tips would be better. TS100 is meant to be open source, and the Pinecil V2 tips are just shorter with a different resistance.
6SixTy··on Porting systemd to musl Libc-powered Linux
Good chance that baby monitor uses something like FreeRTOS, not Linux for doing it's stuff. If you are unlucky, it's Android and they did the bare minimum to have a functional product.

E: Also, Android uses the Linux kernel, but similarities with Linux based operating systems pretty much stop there.

6SixTy··on COSMIC Alpha Released
Wouldn't necessarily compare Sid to Rawhide, since for example, the Nvidia drivers on Sid are still on 535, while 550 has been released and is actually very good. Rawhide is almost analogous to Gentoo's unstable releases where whatever you are getting is probably being pulled directly from the source rather than a discrete release.

Whatever the Debian team calls their releases, you can pretty much slide it back a spot or two within the chain of release freshness relative to most other distros. It's almost impossible to accurately compare the totality of packages between distros and make any reasonable conclusion, but it's pretty safe to say that with the snapshot of limited software I have looked at that is reasonably meant to be updated such as userspace graphics libraries, Debian's stance on an unstable or testing distro does not align with the colloquial definition of such a thing.

6SixTy··on The effect of CRTs on pixel art
Here's my 2 cents: no one needs that kind of stuff. Retro can be free, and only reason you would want to break out your wallet is if you really care that much about things beyond the game.
6SixTy··on The effect of CRTs on pixel art
Be careful mentioning pixels next to the word 'CRT', as you'll get people parroting that CRTs have no real pixels even though it's more complicated than that which would be disingenuous being condensed.
6SixTy··on A secure embedded operating system for microcontrollers
That space is usually filled by FreeRTOS, no?
