5teev··on GitHub for Mac
And as Mac users, they may be consciously avoiding the reverse of an all too familiar situation, where non-Mac-using Windows developers shoddily port their app to OSX.
5teev··on Impressions : The Decline of Flash
It seems unlikely those sites have a very representative audience. The numbers you cite are perhaps large slices of tiny slivers of the overall group of web users.
5teev··on Impressions : The Decline of Flash
It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for Flash to retrench, slim down, and focus only on the things for which it's best suited.
5teev··on It's official: developers get better with age. And scarcer.
Sometimes it's good to be a late bloomer.
5teev··on It's official: developers get better with age. And scarcer.
It's probably the former. Older people--developers included--can enter a phase of "generativity" wherein they seek to give something back to the world in which they've prospered by helping following generations.

See "Generativity vs. Stagnation" in this list of Erickon's Psychosocial Stages of Development:

5teev··on Sometimes What's Normal is Pretty Absurd.
As I understand it, the European Smarts are much lighter and thus more fuel efficient; the US government (perhaps in a move of trade protectionism) required a lot of extra body reinforcement for Smart cars before they would allow their import to the US. At least the last time I checked, their fuel economy was on par with other four-seaters (hybrids, 3-cyls) I looked at.
5teev··on Mac OS X Lion: Coming In July For $29
Yes, in spite of claims to the contrary, 10.4 -> 10.6 worked for several people I know.
5teev··on Previewing Windows 8 (Video)
It might be good for extremely passive users for whom a computer is just a fancy TV. Tap the screen, sit back and watch stuff.

This is one of those features that seems really cool in a demo, but in practice...well, even decades later my shoulder hurts just thinking about the hour I spent using a "light pen" interface on a vertical "touch" screen.

5teev··on Bare Bones OS Kernel Tutorial
Yes, but as a daily BBEdit user, it was the first thing that crossed my mind. Evidently I am the only one.
5teev··on Bare Bones OS Kernel Tutorial
Just FYI: this "Bare Bones" does not refer to the long-time Mac OS software developer responsible for BBEdit, TextWrangler, etc.
5teev··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
BART and Muni beat most other transit systems in the US, but pale in comparison even to London, let alone Berlin or Frankfurt. If you're heading anywhere west of downtown SF, expect long waits for connecting buses...which often simply fail to appear, NextBus's predictions notwithstanding. As an earlier commenter mentioned, it's not uncommon for SF commuters to finish the last leg of their commute with a cab.

And a lot of people in NYC don't have cars simply because they can't afford to park them, not because available mass transit makes them unnecessary.

5teev··on Jobs on the importance of saying "no"
Another key aspect is that even major software updates tend to work reasonably well on previous generations of their devices. For instance, an iPhone 3GS can run the latest version of iOS, and Apple's one-year OS development cycle isn't obstructed by a carrier's two-year contract cycle.
5teev··on Working with git? These aliases will save you hours
Typing on the command line is not like typing in a code file: it's perhaps the least forgiving environment for typos, and tiny mistakes can have huge consequences. A good typist can re-type the correct text after the command finishes--maybe a moment too late. A good coder takes pains to avoid the mistake in the first place.
5teev··on Is it hard to build a web app that makes at least $1000 a month?
That's exactly where I stopped reading.
5teev··on The Apple ebook apocalypse draws nigh
Apple seems to be doing all right as a middleman.
5teev··on Electron Band Structure In Germanium, My Ass
I wish I'd even once had students who understood the experiment well enough to fabricate data.
5teev··on Amazon’s $23,698,655.93 book about flies
Those sellers are counting on making money by shipping for less than the amount by which Amazon reimburses them. ($3.99 for a recent purchase of mine, while the postage was about $2.00.)
5teev··on The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race
> It's funny, just a couple of hundred years ago, the belief was that the human race used to be happy and successful, and then declined.

This statement can be applied recursively all the way back to the dawn of civilization.

5teev··on The New York Times to Begin Charging for Web Use on March 28
I wonder if Times Select users who paid their annual renewal fee about a month before nytimes.com reverted to free again will receive any credit toward this new pay scheme. Hypothetically speaking, of course.
5teev··on The New York Times to Begin Charging for Web Use on March 28
How?!
5teev··on Time Warner Cable trying to make municipal fiber illegal in North Carolina
Carrying the "natural monopoly" point a little further, it's not all upside for the municipal operator: while the commercial operator could walk away from an unprofitable service area, the municipality will have to provide the service even at a loss. (At least as long as taxpayers think it's worthwhile.)
5teev··on Why Nokia failed: 'Wasted 2,000 man years' on UIs that didn't work
I admired Nokia's "noble" stand against carrier exclusivity deals and subsidized phones, but in retrospect it cost them a lot of their relevance in the US market.
5teev··on Why Nokia failed: 'Wasted 2,000 man years' on UIs that didn't work
"For want of a nail the kingdom was lost" overly diminishes the significance of UI. For users, the experience of using the phone is not a minor detail added onto a great device, it IS the device.

Perhaps a better quote for Nokia's situation is, "My kingdom for a horse...."

5teev··on I have seen the future and I am opposed
Picking a minor nit: I think you mean "asymmetrical" not "asynchronous".
5teev··on 160 People: Skype 5 for Mac = Fail. Skype: No Comment
Adium betas? Probably. Skype betas? No, don't think so.

I've heard only deep regret from friends who tried the new Skype for Mac.

5teev··on Forget Quora, New York's Stack Overflow Is Killing It
Does this headline mean Stack Overflow is actually killing Quora, ending its very existence? Fine.

If it only means Stack Overflow is succeeding, am I the only one tired of this figure of speech?

5teev··on Why I Am Switching to Interleaved Email Replies and Why You Should Too
It probably doesn't matter either way, as it doesn't seem like people do more than skim emails. They won't scroll down to read interleaved replies--Outlook/Entourage's text-formatting doesn't help--nor will they even scroll down if your top-post goes past the default view.

If you can't say it all in three short paragraphs, you either have to spread it out over a few more focused emails, spoon-feed over IM, or--horror of horrors--meet in person!

5teev··on Best Jobs of 2011
Probably that old "publish or perish" thing.
5teev··on Google and H.264 - Far From Hypocritical
This further complicates building video into web sites with a significant IE user base. I've already seen mushrooming complexity with fellow devs trying to get Ogg into the mix using <video> tags, wanting to "do the right thing", and still ending up with a Flash fallback for Windows users.

HTML5 as we currently find it isn't making this simpler at all.

5teev··on Your Code is Not Self Documenting
True, one of the most accomplished programmers I know merely hunts and pecks on the keyboard.
