5ilv3r··on Tech workers worry about age discrimination at age 40: Study
So... you're not a developer then. You're one of those "full stack rockstars" everyone is talking about not talking about.
5ilv3r··on Tech workers worry about age discrimination at age 40: Study
I've recently been thrown into the position of interviewing many candidates for both more senior roles than I have, and job functions I know nothing about. So I'm totally guilty of this, sorry.

We had a candidate a while ago with lots of experience in many different stacks, but none in the ones we use. I suggested to the hiring manager that ageism might be a factor here, as he clearly could learn new stacks based on his past experience, so it was reasonable to expect he could learn ours and not need as much specific experience up front. We didn't hire him, and I feel that was a bad decision when I look back. We recently started hiring grey haired men again, but only after it was needed by the sales team.

5ilv3r··on Symantec CEO says source code reviews by foreign states pose unacceptable risk
Welp, He's straight up lying. Source code would not be their actual virus definitions which are binary patterns, so screw these guys.
5ilv3r··on What Happens When a Suburb Begins to Die?
Storage and transportation of goods from costco is difficult as well. You need extra space in both a vehicle and your home. Difficult with a big family in a small house.
5ilv3r··on EPA photos show what US looked like before pollution regulation
It's difficult to have these conversations when people are constantly terrified of "what trump wants" instead of what he is actually capable of. I'm amazed at how much power people think the president has.
5ilv3r··on Facebook Lies
Well that shows how much they actually care... Yeah. Direct contact has value.
5ilv3r··on General Motors Is Going All Electric
This reminds me of a car sales strategy I heard a long time ago. Don't sell people the car they need for the life they have, sell them the car for the life they want. That's one way you end up with huge pickup trucks being grocery getters and such. They were sold on the idea of owning horses and pulling them around, but that isn't the life they have...

The same ideas work well to discourage EV ownership.

Replacing wheel bearings, brakes, and tires? Easy for a garage mechanic, and cheap too.
5ilv3r··on General Motors Is Going All Electric
There is very little year over year wear. After a decade or two in a moderate climate you can expect 80% capacity still.
5ilv3r··on General Motors Is Going All Electric
It would seem Detroit no longer feels the need to emphasize the importance of traditional energy companies to our future. Very nice too see after so many years of them promising hydrogen will solve everything and make your wife and dog come back home.

Juicaroo!
5ilv3r··on Essential has sold just 5,000 phones since launch
I gotta say, I agree with that alex dude's reply on the supply being out of touch. The focus is all on the wrong stuff. I've specced out my own phone to build from scratch and these are the requirements I came up with:

    Make and receive calls

    Send and receive text messages

    Wifi hotspot
If you put a goddamn rad camera on it, it would be a winner.
5ilv3r··on Essential has sold just 5,000 phones since launch
I would but I can't tell if it makes phone calls or not. They only talk about "matrix", which sounds like some kind of tor phone thing.
5ilv3r··on Text-only NPR
Unformatted text is much easier on my eyes than the grey crap that "designers" are so fond of these days. Its like they think everyone has an IPS screen or something...
5ilv3r··on Oakland and SF sue five oil companies for damages from rising seas
Oil companies emit CO2. _YOU_ emit CO2. Facts.
5ilv3r··on Oakland and SF sue five oil companies for damages from rising seas
This is actually really nice to see. If they can prove that the oil companies were knowingly causing harm, the entire conversation around climate change will shift.

I'm disappointed in the discussion here so far. When did we become a community of "be nice to the big guys"?

5ilv3r··on W3C abandons consensus, standardizes DRM, EFF resigns
It is already very difficult to distribute your own content without subjecting it to some other entity's distribution system, and soon it will be impossible. Chrome and friends will refuse to load unsigned content, and then the death of the free web will be complete.

5ilv3r··on Systemd-resolved does not keep the order of the DNS servers
I run DNS on my file server since it's on all the time anyway. It must fail gracefully or the wife approval factor goes down.
5ilv3r··on Systemd-resolved does not keep the order of the DNS servers
Thanks for the reply, but can you see how the very simple configuration possible on the DHCP server suddenly becomes much much more complicated with the above solutions? You're basically suggesting I run a chef server (or some other central workstation management) in my home to allow talking to machines on my local domain by hostnames.

That's tough to swallow.

5ilv3r··on Systemd-resolved does not keep the order of the DNS servers
They follow freedesktop.
5ilv3r··on Systemd-resolved does not keep the order of the DNS servers
Well said sir!
5ilv3r··on Systemd-resolved does not keep the order of the DNS servers
I run split horizon DNS and have my local DNS server listed before my ISP's in my DHCP server configuration. The order (to me) is important. I want to hit MY dns server always (which does cache), unless it is unavailable, and then I want to hit my ISPs as a fallback only. Is there a suggested way to do this?
5ilv3r··on Ask HN: Do you mostly program in a non-FP or non-OO style? Why?
I try to only use capabilities that are common to all languages. Some basic math, basic conditionals, and maybe poking a file or memory address somewhere. I don't give a enough of a crap to get excited for new but short-lived features anymore.
5ilv3r··on Ask HN: How are you teaching your children programming?
I learned php on a handspring visor with the manual downloaded into a offline browser app while on the playground. Couldn't even run my code until I got home and hotsynced it!
5ilv3r··on Criticizing Google got me fired
Everyone knows that morality does not work that way. There is no 1:1 relationship between righteousness and being a provider.
