5cott0··on Perception: A back-port of Observable
As both a D3 enthusiast and an iOS dev I find this comment oddly compelling. In fact I have always felt SwiftUI to be reminiscent of D3 given they are both declarative frameworks — I always think about d3-selection every time I am chaining modifiers in a SwiftUI view.

I usually disambiguate the Observable website by referring to it as "ObservableHQ", also I thought they were more focused on the relatively new framework Plot than d3 but I agree trying to translate d3 examples from ObservabelHQ cells to plain ol javascript is a severe PITA.

when a so-called flat-org/holacracy company says “you don’t have a boss” what they actually mean is you have an indeterminate # of bosses you just don’t who they are yet

5cott0··on Ask HN: What will it realistically take to create an iOS app?
Do you mean besides the $99/year Apple Dev membership + a Mac?

Other than that the hardest part is convincing AppStore review that whatever you build and submit is useful/interesting enough to be published. There are a ton of little gotchas that don’t always get flagged in app review but can surprise you, no mention of “TestFlight” or Android allowed anywhere including screenshots.

Not difficult but something I always find tedious is all the marketing material required for the App Store, screenshots, icons, & copy. There are tools to automate asset workflows (fastlane snapshot + figma templates, etc) & generative ai is good enough at generating icons & marketing copy.

Almost forgot about Charles Johnson

>Deadspin floated an old college rumor that Johnson had once defecated on a dormitory floor at Claremont. When Johnson tweeted on Friday that he’s considering a run for Congress, the first reply suggested his campaign slogan could be “Outing rape victims and pooping on the floor since 2014. Vote for me.” Of course, I had to ask him about the allegations. “For the record, I did not shit on the seventh floor, but I wish I did,” he told me.

5cott0··on Frasier Fantasy
Who is actually credited with writing the Cheers pilot?
5cott0··on Frasier Fantasy
Burrows wasn’t the writer, the Charles bros were.
5cott0··on Frasier Fantasy
The only original thing in the Cheers pilot was Ted Danson’s wig.

Fun fact (or conspiracy), Cheers and by extension the character of Frasier Crane were plagiarized from a late 70s local Boston sitcom called Park Street Under.

Look for trends, take with a grain of salt. In my experience if you see a clear trend of similar red flags in negative reviews then it's probably at least somewhat accurate.

5cott0··on The new science of meditation
Huairang asked [Mazu], "Why are you sitting in meditation?" [Mazu] replied, "Because I want to become a Buddha." Thereupon Hauirang took a brick and started to polish it in front of [Mazu]'s hermitage. [Mazu] asked him, "Why are you polishing that brick?" Huairang replied, "Because I want to make a mirror." [Mazu] asked, "How can you make a mirror by polishing a brick?" Huairang said, "If I cannot make a mirror by polishing a brick, how can you become a Buddha by sitting in meditation?" [Mazu] asked, "Then what shall I do?" Huairang asked, "When an ox-carriage stops moving, do you hit the carriage or the ox?" [Mazu] had no reply. Huairang continued, "Are you practicing to sit in meditation, or practicing to sit like a Buddha? As to sitting in meditation, meditation is neither sitting nor lying. As to sitting like a Buddha, the Buddha has no fixed form. In the non-abiding Dharma, one should neither grasp nor reject. If you try to sit like a Buddha, you are just killing the Buddha. If you attach to the form of sitting, you will never realize the principle." Upon hearing this [Mazu] felt as if he had tasted ghee.

I've actually never had a tarot reading and only know about it from The Pictorial Key to the Tarot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pictorial_Key_to_the_Tarot

Waite's descriptions strikes me as densely arcane and potent sounding symbolism that can be used suggestively to try and provoke some kind of experience or insight in the querent. That's my take.
