57FkMytWjyFu··on Ask HN: Why is there no way to lower amber alert volume on headphones?
Yes, while I was aware of this prior from other sources, here's some data. https://www.protection1.com/_cdn/fractl/amber-alerts/assets/...
57FkMytWjyFu··on Ask HN: Why is there no way to lower amber alert volume on headphones?
It's when you destroy the attention span of anyone within driving distance of a custodial dispute.

There's also silver alerts, where you do the same for a missing old person.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Dear grocery store owners: I don’t work for you

57FkMytWjyFu··on DIY air purifier under $100 is taking America’s classrooms by storm
I agree, but your mods sound like 8 billion dollars now.

And we haven't even bought a filter change yet.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Ask HN: Do I publish code that affects millions of wireless security cameras?
The way these IP cameras work is that when you configure them from an app or some dodgy viewer is that that software calls the cloud server, and tells it what the details are for your LAN connected IP cameras.

You really can't let them know how to dial out. Most of them have hardcoded passwords and/or known exploits.

It's why they're so cheap on the 'zon.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Ask HN: Do I publish code that affects millions of wireless security cameras?
This is why I have my cameras on a routerless subnet with dual NIC viewing machines.
57FkMytWjyFu··on DIY air purifier under $100 is taking America’s classrooms by storm
They make it sound so cheap. 4 Billion dollars worth of single use MERV-13 filters, rounded off by box fans that might last a year or two.

Brought to you by 3M.

57FkMytWjyFu··on The Hummingbird Clock: date videos by background mains hum
I much prefer mains hum to Tom Scott. Call me crazy, I guess.
57FkMytWjyFu··on Windows 95 had dedicated code to run Sim City
I'm struggling to see what is safer about a modded exe.

I'm similarly struggling to see the value in breaking old games because new versions exist.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Electric car charging in just 5 minutes achieved with unprecedented NASA tech
I would like to know whether it wears out the battery faster, like all the other fast charging methods.

If so, it's a no go.

57FkMytWjyFu··on DALL·E 2 vs. $10 Fiverr Commissions
You make graphs using data, not aesthetics.

Please don't make any more graphs not based on data.

57FkMytWjyFu··on EVs Are Too Heavy for Current Road Weight Limits, Car Haulers Say
No they aren't. How many they want to cram on the truck is. This is wear and tear our roads and bridges do not need.
57FkMytWjyFu··on Tell HN: It would be cool if a mousewheel momentum scrolled
I'd go with a macro mouse with [Ctrl W], [Ctrl T], [Ctrl Shift T], [Page Up], and [Page down]. (And you still have 7 more shortcuts for whatever.)

Pages hiccup on scroll wheel mice, so your 'momentum' gets eaten every time the pagination occurs.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Ask HN: What would be the best method for communicating chess moves?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thing_(listening_device)

snip for interesting content...

"The Thing was designed by Soviet Russian inventor Leon Theremin,[4] best known for his invention of the theremin, an electronic musical instrument. "

Infrasonics could be a candidate as well.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Nuclear Power Still Doesn’t Make Much Sense
I wonder what the 'levelized cost' is when you take in to account the massive changes that need to take place to move renewable energy from where it is generated, to where it is consumed. Our grid isn't ready.
57FkMytWjyFu··on In an effort to curb global warming engineers have created the whitest paint yet
Yes, if you painted the mounting surface with it, and used bifacial panels.

You'd still be better off just increasing your surface area of the normal type though.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Meta Quest Pro
You would think an authentic leak wouldn't be placed on Facebook itself.

Smells like astroturfing.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Mississippi water is so dirty residents shower with their mouths shut
You, like everyone else, seem to have missed that I live in Mississippi.

I'm the only one in the comments that has said so.

I'm pretty sure me and all my neighbors are 'hicks'.

Certainly more so than the good people of Jackson.

57FkMytWjyFu··on Mississippi water is so dirty residents shower with their mouths shut
I didn't miss it. I read about it on the 30th of Aug, on this article https://www.wsj.com/articles/jackson-miss-is-out-of-running-...?

It wasn't the only one I've read, either.

Are you not understanding that I live in Mississippi, and I resent the implication that an entire state just has filthy water, because of one city with an awfully young man at the helm?

57FkMytWjyFu··on Mississippi water is so dirty residents shower with their mouths shut
No, I did not miss that. If it's not in the linked article, the implication is that we all just know to shower with our mouth closed. 2.9 million people, vs 149k.

It's hyperbole, without the details.
