4pkjai··on Why [“1”,“2”,“3”].map(parseInt) yields [1, NaN, NaN] in JavaScript (2011)
I read your comment, didn't understand your explanation. Then I read the article and understood. I liked the slower break down in the article.
4pkjai··on Google un-bans Downloader app, but developer still mad about “broken” DMCA
No it requires an internet connection to use my app. I could make an offline version, but it's not something many users are asking for.
4pkjai··on Google un-bans Downloader app, but developer still mad about “broken” DMCA
Very true, the majority of my new users find my web app through Google search. If Google decided to remove me from their search results I would lose a large amount of revenue.
4pkjai··on Google un-bans Downloader app, but developer still mad about “broken” DMCA
I built the Android app in 2013, and my best selling web app in 2021. The web app has just gotten beyond the $10,000 USD monthly recurring revenue metric.

About the same really.

4pkjai··on Google un-bans Downloader app, but developer still mad about “broken” DMCA
I think browser push notifications are considered a bit of a failed standard. Lots of browser's don't support them e.g. iOS browsers.
4pkjai··on Google un-bans Downloader app, but developer still mad about “broken” DMCA
I had an app that was making about $10,000 USD a month. It was taken down by Google because apparently I copied some other developer's iOS app.

I asked them to tell me the name of the iOS app they believed I copied. They named the iOS version of my Android app.

They basically accused me of copying myself because the Android version was under my company's name while the iOS version was under my name.

Google unbanned the app, but sales dropped to $1000 a month.

After that ordeal I decided to build web apps only.

4pkjai··on People in the U.S. Think They Are Better Than They Are. Asians Don’t
Often I find Americans have a lot more confidence in their skills than they should.
4pkjai··on User In Yer Face, a worst-practise UI experiment (2018)
I failed it a few times, but passed when I got the glasses option and selected every box.
4pkjai··on User In Yer Face, a worst-practise UI experiment (2018)
Very clever, I enjoyed getting past all that. I have seen the "needs-to-be-deleted" placeholder text in the wild before. It's very silly.
4pkjai··on Airbnb is making life hell for young renters in tourist hotspots
Hong Kong is a tourist hotspot, but it hasn't had an effect on our rental market. It's already hell here!
4pkjai··on Rails Cheat Sheet
I think they lost a lot of growth because of the bad PR from Twitter.

Twitter started with rails and constantly went down. Rails was blamed for the downtime, perhaps unfairly.

4pkjai··on Startup Playbook
Agree with everything except the last line. You outlined one path to creating a successful SaaS company, but there are other paths.
4pkjai··on I just learned about HTML redirects (2020)
Monit does to this produce a live feed. It’s kind of annoying sometimes, you lose highlighted text.
4pkjai··on Toyota plug-in hybrids to offer 124-mile electric-only range
I drove a Toyota Corolla Hybrid a few months ago. Loved the car.
4pkjai··on Becoming Rustacean: Resources to Learn Rust Programming
I really like the speed of rust. It’s very difficult to learn it though
4pkjai··on No-cost access to the latest PDF standard: ISO 32000-2 (PDF 2.0)
I run a business that extracts data from PDFs, even I couldn’t justify paying 290 CHF to buy a copy of the standard
4pkjai··on Treat your to-read pile like a river, not a bucket
You the reader, should treat this article like a river and read only the second last paragraph.
4pkjai··on Accenture slashes 19,000 jobs worldwide
We used to call projects they built for us Accidentures.
4pkjai··on Five years of indie hacking
It's indie because she built the product independently.
4pkjai··on Ask HN: Any solo game developers here?
I used to be an indie game developer from 2010 to 2014. I created games using the XNA framework for Xbox360. It was a fun time, most of my games made very little money but a few them were popular.

When I switched from game development to app development I got the feeling that game development required 3x the effort to make a $1 when compared to business app development.

I guess it's like the difference between being an artist and a graphic designer

4pkjai··on I use cheap notebooks
Yeah I do too, I didn't feel the need to blog about it though.
4pkjai··on Service mesh use cases (2020)
We were using Envoy Proxy
4pkjai··on Service mesh use cases (2020)
I really did not enjoy dealing with our service mesh at the last place I worked.
4pkjai··on Exploring the impact of code style in identifying good programmers (2022)
I'd be surprised if most repositories have linters. I've worked on tons of projects that didn't care about enforcing code style.
4pkjai··on Trunk-Based Development: Game Changers
I love trunk based development, but hardly ever get to do it because other developers don’t like it.
4pkjai··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
I wonder if rust will end up as a coding language finance forgets.
4pkjai··on Ask HN: How to self-promote at work?
You're right, it's important. I really wish this wasn't something people did though.
4pkjai··on Tonight's rabbit hole: time math and 32 bit longs
I’ll admit I couldn’t really follow the blog post. I’ve always thought it’d be fun to do some research and understand a post like this, then blog about what I had to learn to understand the post.

Not sure if that’s “bad form” or not

4pkjai··on US Halts Flights Nationwide After Key FAA System Goes Down
Haha I heard about this at Narita Airport earlier today. The announcement was something like “Flights to the US are delayed because of a system error”.

I was thinking it was a problem at Narita!

4pkjai··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2022 and recommend for 2023
Grinding it Out, it’s really Ray Kroc’s autobiography. Very interesting to hear about his life before “founding” McDonalds. Very clearly written and easy to understand.
