3vidence··on Many hard LeetCode problems are easy constraint problems
Honestly in day to day programming I find data types & associated APIs are so so much more important than algorithms.

I would rather work with a flexible data type with suboptimal performance than a brittle data type that maybe squeezes out some extra performance.

Your example of in-place array mutation feels like a good example of such a thing. I feel like there should be a category of interviewing questions for "code-safety" not just performance.

3vidence··on Nano Banana image examples
In case 5: Photos of Yourself in Different Eras

The output just looks like a clearly different person. Its difficult to production-ize things that are inconsistent.

3vidence··on ChatGPT Developer Mode: Full MCP client access
Personal opinion:

MCP for data retrieval is a much much better use case than MCPs for execution. All these tools are pretty unstable and usually lack reasonable security and protection.

Purely data retrieval based tasks lower the risk barrier and still provide a lot of utility.

3vidence··on Ask HN: Significant reduction in AI related submissions?
Are the tags themselves AI generated? they are quite funny in how specific they get e.g. "gaming culture" as the tag.

Also some tags include quotes and other don't haha.

But yeah you should respond to the other comment asking someone to use an LLM to show the trend in AI topics.

3vidence··on Ask HN: Significant reduction in AI related submissions?
Interesting! Good to know other people's experiences, yeah maybe my sampling is just off
3vidence··on Ask HN: When was the last time you visited Stack Overflow?
I still pretty much use it daily-ish but its more to verify something from Gemini than to find entirely new information.
3vidence··on Vibe coding creates a bus factor of zero
YES, this is the way to make AI tools pretty much a strictly positive productivity tool on large codebases.
3vidence··on Starting game development in JavaScript with no experience
After bouncing off of Unity the first few times, I finally decided to commit to it after trying out some of the JS game frameworks (like Phaser)

Absolutely worth it, have made lots of games in Unity just for myself that feel pretty polished, there are just so many systems to make a game work.

The advice around game engines kind of seems like "to learn how to write programs first create the compiler.

Not to say all games should be made in engines but it certainly helps.

3vidence··on GPTs and Feeling Left Behind
In a non-smug kind of way sometimes I just wonder if they types of problems I work on are just harder (at least for an LLM) than a lot of people.

Currently working at a FAANG on some very new tech, have access to all the latest and greatest but LLMs / agents really do not seem adequate working on absolutely massive codebases on entirely new platforms.

Maybe I will have to wait a few years for the stuff I'm working on to enter the mass market so the LLMs can be retrained on it.

I do find them very very useful as advanced search / stack overflow assistants.

3vidence··on Project Vend: Can Claude run a small shop? (And why does that matter?)
I agree there are good examples of 90% being good enough but what you purposed doesn't sound like a good one.

This assumes that AI can't also introduce new bugs into the code causing a negative.

A case of 90% being good enough sound more like story boarding or giving note summaries.

3vidence··on YOLO-World: Real-Time Open-Vocabulary Object Detection
The setback of YOLO architectures is that they use predefined object categories that are a part of the training process. If you want to adapt YOLO to a new domain you need to retrain it with your new category label.

This work presents a version of YOLO that can work on new categories without needing to retrain the algorithm, but instead having a real-time "dictionary" of examples that you can seemlessly update. Seems like a very useful algorithm to me.

Edit: apologies i misread your comment I thought it was asking why this is different that regular YOLO

3vidence··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
The supply and purchase of Dairy in Canada is centralized through the government.

Government sets a supply goal and buys that amount from farmers and then resells to the grocers / public.

It's been this way for a long time. The tarrifs are there to control for a case of oversupply in the market, but I also seem to remember that those supply targets haven't actually been met in a single year so the tarrifs effectively don't apply.

3vidence··on Is the job market for software developers collapsing?
I think the whole "AI will replace developers" thing makes sense to people in silos.

I want to do X I can ask AI to help me with X.

But the thing is that as businesses grow and scale one person cannot even keep in their head all the things that have to get done, let alone write it in such a specific way to get an AI to accomplish it.

Even Jr developers (if used correctly) are not just code assistants, they can actually take your mental load away as they grow and then provide projects / ideas that you didn't even originate.

People have mental limits to how much they context they can keep in their head at the same time, AI does not magically solve this fact.

Hire and develop talent, share the load.

3vidence··on Alberta separatism push roils Canada
Alberta government is trying to rile up people to distract from their own going healthcare scandel where the MP and her party are complicit in stealing billions of funding.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/article/ousted-alberta-mla-sa...

As an eastern Canadian I'm all for expansion of oil production and building a cross country pipelines, but the UCP as a party seem very corrupt.

3vidence··on ChatGPT can accurately estimate Body Fat Percentage from photos
I would have to agree, this feels like fake science. They don't even seem to really present a reasonable initial problem.

This seems like a man / women / skinny / fat detector.

If you just classified people into those categories I wonder if you would achieve a similar level of accuracy.

3vidence··on Flattening Rust’s learning curve
I still haven't gotten into rust yet, mostly due to time and demand, but, I have been doing a lot of C++ in the past few years.

Coming from that background these rules sound fantastic, theres been a lot of work put into c++ the past few years to try and make these things easier to enforce but it's still difficult to do right even with smart pointers.

3vidence··on Toronto's unsold condo rate has reached 'an incredible level': expert
The units were never really built for people to live in pure investment.

Now that there is pullback in the global investment markets there is little to no domestic demand.

SFH and low-rise apartment buildings seem to continue to sell as fast as ever

3vidence··on Port of Los Angeles says shipping volume will plummet 35% next week
Setting prices seems like it is just one executive order away...
3vidence··on Waymo and Toyota outline partnership to advance autonomous driving deployment
Isn't the rav4 hybrid the best selling non truck in the US? The comments on this story amaze me with how inaccurate people are about Toyota hybrids.
3vidence··on All four major web browsers are about to lose 80% of their funding
Was going to say this, I can't remember the exact figure but it was something crazy like 20% of net profit was from that deal.

TODO: find a link to the original article that mentioned it.

3vidence··on ICE Deports 3 U.S. Citizen Children Held Incommunicado Prior to the Deportation
This is what HN has felt like for the past ~year ish. Makes me realize this community has a lot of "bike shedding" types who easily miss the forest from the trees.

Slowly stopped looking for insight here on any topic that involves even a small amount of larger picture thinking, really quite sad.

3vidence··on A $20k electric truck with manual windows and no screens? Meet Slate Auto
What an odd conclusion considering how many people get into car accidents when backing out of spaces.

Reducing the chance of a car accident by like 5% would be incredibly beneficial to everyone.

3vidence··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
So you can read the emergencies act here https://www.canada.ca/en/department-justice/news/2022/02/can...

It requires the house and Senate to vote amongst other requirements.

PMs are re-elected every 4 years and need to continue to win their riding just like every other MP.

The fact that MPs don't regularly vote against their party seems like pretty standard politics across the world.

The government can also call votes of no faith to remove the current PM which has indeed happened to the last 2.

I don't think you need malice to spread misinformation you just have not done sufficient research in this topic before making your comments.

Edit: I'm not familiar with the structure of Israel's government so I cant comment on how much power their PM has individually.

3vidence··on Show HN: I made a machine learning model to predict 66.45% of NBA games
Don't want to be mean to OP but it is a completely useless stat by someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

That isn't said out spite or think OP is trying to be deceptive, it just shows a lack of understanding of the task at hand.

OKC is going to win around 70 of 82 games this year.

If I just naively say OKC will win every game I'm going to be 85% accurate no models required.

3vidence··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
There really isn't need to share misinformation on HN.

The PM has slight larger responsibility the a regular MP.

I'm not a big fan of JTs policies over the years but they were done via parliamentary support.

3vidence··on I Vibe Coded a Game That Attracted 10k+ Players in a Single Weekend
Anyone else get the sense there is less vibes involved in vibe coding than people let on?

As in there is probably a significant amount of intervention at each step that they just gloss over at the end.

I did my own experiment in vibe coding over the weekend and the AI assistant just kept getting things wrong.

Maybe I've chosen the wrong framework or language for AI idk.

3vidence··on Trump's Trade War Escalates as China Retaliates with 34% Tariffs
Feels like peak HN to just say all Americans can weather extra thousands per year...
3vidence··on All estimations are wrong, but none are useful
I've found in my career so far estimates are very useless but "key dates" can be very useful.

A key date could be an investor demo, marketing launch, actual physical launch if you are in hardware, etc, most importantly something with an audience outside of any of the core team. Find that important date and work backwards from it and find out what is important to finish by then.

This approach has defintiley saved me a lot of sanity compared to arbitrary "estimates" that are destined to be push forever until you run into one of these key dates.

3vidence··on MLB says Yankees' new "torpedo bats" are legal and likely coming
Also helps he is not exceptionally tall to keep a lower center of gravity.

Josh Allen on the bills also tries this and is very strong but it's harder for him to get as low.

3vidence··on Canadian Devs Are Backing Out of Attending GDC
This is unacceptable "both sides"-ism, the US government has made direct threats to the Canadian government and people. Canadians are rightfully taking issue with it.

Part of the reason Canadians are boycotting American goods and services is to force us citizens to voice issue with their government.

At this point the issue remains with the American people to address their government.

What adminstration in the Canadian government is there for Americans to oppose?? Nobody even knows the source of the tarrif issue.
