3stripe··on State of the Digital Nation 2016
tl;dr — It's impossible to predict the future.

I enjoyed this quote...

“Management consultancy… The art of stealing someone’s pocket watch and telling them the time”

3stripe··on Show HN: The first issue of Compelling Science Fiction
Love the concept, good sci-fi is hard to come by.

Design thought: the reading experience would be vastly improved by a larger font size and shorter line length. See https://edwardtufte.github.io/tufte-css/ or similar for inspiration.

3stripe··on Solving the cash problems from self-funding rapid growth
Sidenote — I find it odd that Baremetrics make customer details public — eg if you view the images at https://convertkit.baremetrics.com/stats/reactivations, you can see everyone's Twitter handle, despite the "anonymous" customer names
3stripe··on How Anxious Reappraisal Can Help Turn Anxiety into Productivity
Works for me... I'm fairly intovert and used this approach in the lead up to my first professional speaking gig last year :)
3stripe··on An administrator accidentally deleted the production database
Apologies if I've put the wrong slant on this — designer not a tech expert. Could still edit the title of the submission if there's something else it should say?
3stripe··on An administrator accidentally deleted the production database
Posting as a reminder to myself that "in the cloud" != safe

There's always room for computer error, and more like, human error.

Imagine if something like this happened to Dropbox? Ooooft.

3stripe··on Neal Stephenson: Why I Am a Sociomediapath (2015)
I'm making this book my Bible for getting stuff done in 2016. Social media = crack.
3stripe··on LeBron James Signs Unprecedented Lifetime Contract with Nike
Swap 'logo' for 'brand' in that sentence and you'd be more on track. Without the personal brand of Jordan, the logo is moot.
3stripe··on A company called SkyTran is making maglev passenger “cars”
Bicycles are safe, it's the road design that often isn't. Look at the stats in countries like the Netherlands, not the US, for an idea of what could be done.
3stripe··on A company called SkyTran is making maglev passenger “cars”
We already have "an efficient, sustainable and safe form of transportation" - and it's also both fun and healthy - the bicycle.
3stripe··on How I Quit My Job and Built My First App
Step 6: Write a Medium article about it
3stripe··on Walmart’s $10 Smartphone Has Better Specs Than the Original iPhone
Is that the standard price in the US? They're £120+ here in the UK...
3stripe··on Morocco poised to become a solar superpower with launch of desert mega-project
The fact that I have no idea what GW means might give you a clue why journalists do this.
3stripe··on Things I did to reboot my life
Try building one habit at a time. Do it for 60 days in a row (but don't beat yourself up if you miss a few days). Then start building the next habit...

I had a breakdown a few years and tried to change a lot of things at once — it didn't really work! You can read some more of my thoughts about this at https://gumroad.com/l/reset-your-brain

3stripe··on Show HN: Exposé – a static site generator for photos and videos
Lovely. Would be swell if you could plug it straight into a Dropbox folder.
3stripe··on The improbable rise and fall of Couchsurfing
I live in a rented apartment so I can't legally host on Airbnb - but I'd love to simultaneously room-swap with people in other cities when I travel... (Eg swap my place in London with someone in Berlin for a week or two)
3stripe··on Reality does not exist if you are not looking at it
This is how FPS games conserve memory, right? Just saying...
3stripe··on Walking Through a Doorway Makes You Forget (2011)
I had this idea for a minimal life countdown which is positioned at the exit of your house (eg inside the front door) and shows you how many days left you have in your life each time you leave the house.

Reading this makes me wonder if a better place for it would be somewhere on the outside of your doorway... :)

3stripe··on Amazon to begin paying corporation tax on UK retail sales
Hard to believe Amazon got away with this for so long...

"The group made $8.3bn (£5.3bn) of worldwide sales from British online shoppers but for 11 years all these internet transactions have been booked in Luxembourg."

3stripe··on When will we find aliens?
A better question is probably: When will aliens find us?

"ET is 99% likely to be more than 50 million years in front of us and that’s ample time to completely explore this galaxy. So it’s 99% likely they know we are here."

3stripe··on TextNut – a WYSIWYG markdown editor for Mac
That might be the case, but it doesn't make it ok for TextNut to clone 75% of their UI
3stripe··on Building an Empire with a Single Brick: Meet Patrick McKenzie
Ohhhhhhhhh, Patrick is the Bingo Card Creator dude!

Somehow I didn't make that connection before, even though I follow him on Twitter.

3stripe··on The Origins of the <blink> tag (2008)
Juuuuuuuuuuuuust in case anyone hasn't seen this before...

3stripe··on Hacker Monthly will publish its final issue 12 months from now
When I started blogging a couple of years ago, Hacker Monthly MADE MY YEAR when they put my 'Why I Cycled 100 Miles to Meet My First Customer' story on the front cover

So I just wanted to send you a hug over the internet.

I've loved getting a copy of the magazine by email every month since then.

All the best from London,

James

3stripe··on Show HN: Emergency fund calculator: how long will it take to save 3months wages?
This is an MVP of a tool I want to build for people considering self-employment.

Are there other monthly expenses or financial data it should be capturing? (I didn't want to break down the expenses too much further as it would make the form overwhelming).

How would you make the experience better?

(I've ended up locking the sheet to prevent people from breaking it... ideally of course you would be able to start tinkering straight away... maybe there's a script I could use to reset the spreadsheet every hour?)

Thanks :)

3stripe··on The freelancer's guide to good jobs and great pay
Yeah, it's like all those famous chefs who give their recipes away for free, and then charge money for a printed and bound collection of them... SCANDALOUS
3stripe··on Oliver Sacks on learning he has terminal cancer
Thank you, I will be doing this. And learning some more about my home town no doubt.
3stripe··on Why reading a book 100 times is a great idea
One of my favourite books is The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Three reads and counting...

A friend of mine recently became a father and says that he reread the book and saw it in a completely different light as a result of having a son of his own.

Books don't change over time, but I'm pretty sure that your life situation and experiences can to the extent that a book becomes open to a new interpretation.

3stripe··on Ask HN: What was your biggest fuckup of 2014?
Thanks Scott. I liked this line a lot "Don’t equate making mistakes with being a mistake".
