3eb7988a1663··on S&P 500 rejects SpaceX, also blocking entry for OpenAI and Anthropic
The non-conservative approach would be to quickly change the rules to avoid missing the latest opportunity?
3eb7988a1663··on Scientists ejected from diabetes conference for distributing journal reprints
Conferences have dozens of people distributing pamphlets, papers, ads, and all manner of literature. To share a publication from an authoritative body with peers is a common action.
3eb7988a1663··on S&P 500 rejects SpaceX, also blocking entry for OpenAI and Anthropic
The only decision they are making is to maintain their existing rules. Which is what a slow-moving, conservative financial instrument should do.

S&P may very well end up buying SpaceX, but it will be through the standard mechanism they have been using for decades. Not in a last second bum-rush deal that NASDAQ made to grant special favors.

One year from IPO, the insider lock-up periods will have expired, so insiders who want to get out will have had an opportunity to dump their shares in a risk-based approach without a guaranteed payout from index funds.

3eb7988a1663··on U.S. to dismantle system tracking Atlantic currents that are at risk of collapse
The cheapest option would be to leave them in place and stop monitoring. Removing them is costly, but prevents anyone from ever re-initiating the buoys. Like when they told NASA to burn up a weather satellite they did not like.
3eb7988a1663··on Experts sound alarm over Elon Musk's 'coup' that's 'about to rob your 401k'
What about all of the people at NASDAQ who approved this change? How cheaply were they bribed to go along with this plan?
3eb7988a1663··on Starbucks Abandons Borked AI Inventory Tool That Couldn't Count
I am also missing the cost savings. I assume coffee shops have extensive dead-time in between peak hours. If some person does not have to manually perform inventory during the day - what other value was on the table to be generated?
3eb7988a1663··on Hormuz crisis side effect: a sharp rise in container shipping rates
Pipelines are also easily targeted, should an adversary wish to destroy one. There is no way to protect hundreds of miles of static infrastructure.
3eb7988a1663··on Hormuz crisis side effect: a sharp rise in container shipping rates
Resuming production is also going to take years. Every bit of oil storage inside the Strait is at maximum capacity. All of the wells have had to stop producing because there is nowhere for the oil to go. When wells stop, it can take a long time to ramp up the production to previous levels -assuming it can ever again resume its prior peak output. Additionally, several key bits of infrastructure (trains, refineries) have been damaged and cannot be easily repaired.
3eb7988a1663··on Show HN: A website that tracks every stock trade Congress makes
Is there going to be any accountability to the people at NASDAQ who made this decision? Surely the big investors not on the inside of SpaceX must be mad about these shenanigans? Or is it all an insider's club, where each party is hoping for their own turn to make a big gift?
3eb7988a1663··on How Shamir's Secret Sharing Works
Do the people who hold the root DNS keys do anything like this? Or is that too much complexity when a safe in a secure room works as an effective backup?
3eb7988a1663··on Does anybody like React?
Sure, but the internet is majority bad SPAs vs good ones. Rarely am I delighted by a SPA, but suffer through how poorly it works in bad network conditions, usable back buttons, or otherwise respecting the user.
3eb7988a1663··on Alaska's oil revival sparks a new energy rush Into the Arctic
The Ember 2026 report[0] shows that 75% of new power generation in 2025 was from solar. Solar + wind were 99% of new generation capacity. Fossil fuel generation dropped for one of the first times ever (historical reductions were typically due to structural reasons like COVID or recession). In a first, renewable sources made more for the planet than coal.

Renewables are absolutely going to be powering the future. Recent events have done nothing but accelerate the transition as countries are going to run to reduce their petroleum dependencies.

Just append a reactive metal. "Like water through sodium"
3eb7988a1663··on Microsoft pulls plug on plans for 244-acre data center in Caledonia (2025)
Notably, this location is not far from where the Foxconn facility was going to be installed (the "eighth wonder of the world", 10k+ jobs, yada yada). After that debacle, I can imagine local residents are deeply skeptical of new big development projects.
3eb7988a1663··on My minimal, memory-safe Go rsync steers clear of vulnerabilities
Is there a solid reference resource on handling symlinks? It seems a never ending source of security bugs.
3eb7988a1663··on Microsoft pulls plug on plans for 244-acre data center in Caledonia (2025)
Surely I benefit from a host of things for which I want nowhere near me. Strip mining, petroleum refining, chemical processing, coal fired electricity, etc. Am I allowed any autonomy or must we all accept that if a rich group wants to plop down a leather tanning factory across the street, I should have no recourse?
3eb7988a1663··on Defeating Git Rigour Fatigue with Jujutsu
That is a lot of discipline up front. I am sure there are problems which are nicely bucketed, but I usually have to go with the flow and make changes as I see them. I want to keep working with the code, not babysitting version control as I focus on getting the initial version to work.
3eb7988a1663··on The seed oil panic is hurting my cardiac patients
Hmmm, sure enough. What's three orders of magnitude between friends?
3eb7988a1663··on The seed oil panic is hurting my cardiac patients
On a per-calorie basis, yes. Animal protein requires 10x the input of what you get back: 100 calories of chicken requires 1000 calories of feed. Now what we feed livestock is unlikely what most people would want to consume, but the systems are in place to allow such a transition.

Last time I looked it up, the US produces something like a ~million+~ kilograms of corn for every person in the country.

Edit: it was pointed out my corn estimate was off, and it is order of magnitude 1000kg per person.

3eb7988a1663··on Time to talk about my writerdeck
That looks really cool, but that price point. I could get a Steam Deck + travel keyboard and still come out ahead.

Is that the true price for a low volume, niche product? Eink monopoly continues to make the world worse?

Looked it up, and the original One Laptop per Child came in around $200

3eb7988a1663··on Rubish: A Unix shell written in pure Ruby
No help here. I daily drive fish, and subscribe to the philosophy that more than 5 lines of bash is probably a mistake. That being said, I still run into bash everywhere and wish that there was a more robust default installed already. Something which did not require pathological monitoring by shellcheck.
3eb7988a1663··on My two-part desk setup (2025)
Ehh, I find it difficult to distinguish between "taste" and "money". The shelving alone is a "contact us for pricing" situation. Premium items coupled with a too-clean-to-be-used work environment and natural light can do a significant lift in the "taste" department.
3eb7988a1663··on Rubish: A Unix shell written in pure Ruby
I am deeply hopeful that Oil Shell (now just Oils) will get embraced by a big distro as the standard shell at some point. The lowest friction migration I see available while still offering a bunch of improvements.

3eb7988a1663··on SpaceX S-1
What is a realistic scenario for how this plays out? After index funds mechanically buy SpaceX, the insider lock out expires and they all sell - how low does SpaceX go? Will reality hit and a $2T valuation instantly drops to a more "reasonable" value for an unprofitable company? Will it stay in the clouds?

Tesla seems in a world of hurt unless robots start making space centers from moon rocks, yet that is also defying gravity.

3eb7988a1663··on SpaceX S-1
I thought I saw a report from someone at Google saying that they were still running 7+ year old hardware because of demand. Even if it is not state of the art, if it generates more than the electricity costs, keep it running until it dies.
3eb7988a1663··on FiveThirtyEight articles on the Internet Archive
If I wanted to get the complete WARC archive of 538 - how do you do this in a friendly way? No interest in history tracking, just want the last available version from Internet Archive.
3eb7988a1663··on Disney erased FiveThirtyEight
Admit wrong, from Apple? Was there acknowledgement of say butterfly keyboards? Seems on brand to quietly walk back an unpopular decision.
3eb7988a1663··on War game exposed U.S. vulnerability to low-tech warfare
I keep wondering if this is a preview of the future. If I were a nation state looking to initiate hostilities, how "easy" it would be to have a handful of kamikaze drones discretely built and distributed around juicy targets.

Radar, AA, expensive jets, core infrastructure. All attacked as part of an opening salvo which could cripple the enemy's forces on the first day.

3eb7988a1663··on Earth's Radio Bubble: Every signal we've ever sent into space
In the book Diaspora, ancient aliens replaced the elements with the unusual form - I forget the details, but say N15 instead of the common N14, O15 instead of O16. Gives a big bright signal that something unusual is happening on this planet.
